LC Softball Stuns Park View in District Semifinals

By: Dan Sousa

Leesburg (May 23, 2007) – The Park View High School softball team came within a play or two of defeating nationally-ranked Broad Run twice this season but the Patriots won’t be headed to regional action this year after Loudoun County pulled off a 4-1 upset Tuesday night in the AA Dulles District semifinals.

The game was scoreless for four innings. LC scored first when courtesy runner Katie Graff came home on a Rochelle Latka RBI single.  Amanda Arbogast added to the lead with a two-run double in the sixth after PV had tied the game. The Raiders, the visiting team because of their lower seed even though the game was played on their home field, added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with another RBI by Latka.

Lindsey Holtz picked up the victory on the mound and she was backed by excellent defensive play.

The Raiders actually threatened in the first inning when lead off hitter Latka got on with a single and then stole second base to give the Raiders a runner in scoring position with no outs, but she was stranded on second.

Park View threatened numerous times in the first four innings, leaving multiple runners on base.

In the top of the fifth inning, Holtz reached on a hit and replaced by Graff on base. She then moved to second on a walk to Kristen Gorman.  Latka followed with an RBI single.

Park View answered right back by scoring one run in the bottom of the 5th to leave the game tied 1-1 going to the top of the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth Brittany Gibb singled for the Raiders, and Hope Flanagan walked to put two runners on.  Arbogast doubled to score both Gibb and Flanagan, but she was thrown out trying to stretch the play into a triple.

The Raiders then held the Patriots scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, leaving the score at 3-1 going into the final inning.

In the top of the seventh Rachel Wigfield got on with a base knock and then stole second base. Gorman followed with a single, advancing Wigfield to third.  Gorman than stole second to put runners at second and third.  Latka came to bat and earned another RBI with a hard shot to shortstop, scoring Wigfield.

The Patriots than retired the side leaving the Raiders up 4 – 1 going into the bottom of the seventh.  In the bottom of the seventh the Holtz and the Raiders defense retired PV 1-2-3.

For the Raiders, Latka was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Arbogast was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Gibb was 2-for-4, and Holtz was 2-for-3.

Patriot Softball Ace accepts Shepherd’s offer

 By: Dan Sousa

Sterling (May 9, 2007) – Park View High School is proud to announce
that a member of its 2007 varsity softball team has accepted an offer
to play softball for Shepherd University.

Nichole Pitcock has had an impressive career as a student-athlete
for the Patriots.  As a softball player, she has been nothing short of
incredible these last two years.  She took over pitching duties this
year after the graduation of Brittany Gardner and has been stellar. At
present, she has a 10-2 record and an ERA of 0.70.  She is hitting .340
and leads the team in doubles and RBIs.  She has been named Co-Captain
this year and has shown exceptional field leadership.  In her junior
year, she led the team with a .468 batting average and was named to the
All District First team and the All Region II second team.  Shepherd
Head Coach David Trail is excited about Nichole’s entering in the class
of  2011 and is looking forward to working with her both on the mound
and in the field.

On Monday, 14 May, Park View High School will hold a ceremony to
celebrate Nichole’s decision. The ceremony will be held in the library
at 3:45.

Griffin Finds Inspiration from Above and Support From Park View Baseball Teammates

Leesburg (May 2, 2007) – Park View High School senior Matt Griffin
finds inspiration from above when he takes the mound for the Patriots.
You can actually see it as Griffin always looks at the inside of his
cap before he pitches.

Inside the cap are the initials of his grandfather who passed away
in 2001 and the initials of a 4-year-old cousin, who tragically died in
2002. A week ago, Griffin added a “VT” to his cap in honor of those who
lost their lives in the Virginia Tech campus shootings. That event had
hit close to home for Griffin as his older brother attends Tech.

A week ago Griffin was able to work almost nine innings of shutout
baseball against Loudoun County and then he had the game-winning hit in
the 11th inning of the 1-0 victory that put the Patriots into first
place in the AA Dulles District baseball race.

The team celebrated by giving Griffin the game ball. Unfortunately
for Matt and the Griffin family, the happy times were quickly clouded
as a close uncle of Matt’s passed away and the family made the long
trip to Lake Ronkonkoma on Long Island in New York for the wake and
funeral.

An emotional Griffin took his game ball with him and on Monday he
laid it in his uncle’s casket. Ginger Griffin, Matt’s mother, says her
son was very close to his uncle and that by Monday evening he was
literally sick to his stomach.

Griffin also had another emotion churning inside him. His baseball
team was back in Virginia preparing for yet another big game, this time
at Heritage High School on Tuesday.

His aunt had no doubt that her husband would have wanted Matt to get
back and play. In fact, she told him that Al would be watching Matt
right alongside his grandpa and that it was important for him to go
home and pitch.

The rest of the family was not prepared to return yet so Matt begged
his 23-year-old sister Kim to drive him back to Sterling in time for
school Tuesday morning.

So Matt and his sister loaded up at 10 p.m. Monday night and headed
out from Lake Ronkonkoma to make the long trip  home. At 4 a.m. Tuesday
morning they arrived back in Loudoun and a bleary-eyed Matt was on time
for school and good to play.

Ginger and her husband Bob wondered “how in the heck he was going to
pitch after the day he had”. Matt had the support and backing of his
teammates, however, who did the best to cheer him up and be there for
him. True teammates are there for you, on and off the field.

By Tuesday evening, Griffin was ready to take the mound against the
Pride and this time he had added a new set of initials to his cap, “AP”
for his uncle.

Bob and Ginger, who never miss one of Matt’s games, were actually on
the Verrazano Bridge when the first pitch was thrown Tuesday. Kim
called her parents and gave them an inning-by-inning account so they
could keep up with Matt and his Park View teammates as they drove back
from New York.

It is a lot to ask of a young man to go through what Matt went
through and then go out and perform up to his ability in a high school
sporting event. How did he handle it?

Like always, Griffin let the inspiration from above guide him and it
carried him through as he hurled six shutout innings and he added what
appeared to be merely an insurance run with an RBI hit in the bottom of
the sixth inning, but it turned out to be the game-winning run when
Heritage score twice in the top of the seventh before falling 3-2.

There may come a time 30 or 40 years from now when Matt Griffin
won’t be able to recall the details of all the wins and losses while
playing high school baseball. What we tend to remember most are the
relationships and part of being on a team. Griffin will no doubt
remember how his teammates were there for him in tough times and when
he looks at his old ball cap with those initials under the bill, he
will recall that he pitched with inspiration from above.

PV Remains on Top of Baseball Standings with Win Over Heritage

Leesburg (May 1, 2007) – Matt Griffin tossed six
shutout innings against Heritage Tuesday to lead Park View to a 3-2 AA
Dulles District victory. The win keeps the Patriots (10-2, 13-4) on top
of the standings and eliminated the Pride (6-5, 9-6) from
regular-season title contention.

The senior struck out six Pride batters and allowed only two hits
and four walks, all after getting home from New York at 4 a.m. (For
more on Griffin’s long day, see Dan Sousa’s On The Sidelines column).

“It was tough to bounce back,” Griffin said, “but my defense was
right behind me and the team was behind me cheering me up the whole
time. I knew I had to come out and do my job for these guys and not for
myself.”

Griffin also drove in what turned out to be the winning run in the
top of the seventh as he gave Park View a 3-0 lead. Heritage was able
to score two runs in the bottom of the inning against reliever Kyle
Irish, but Jimmy Kerby recorded the final two outs with the bases
loaded to notch the save and secure the win.

“That was another one of those classic Park View-Heritage
ballgames,” said Park View coach Mickey Leap. “You can never have
enough runs and you never know what’s going to happen. Matt threw a
heck of a ballgame.”

Park View took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning when they broke
through against Heritage reliever Grant Groves in his first inning of
work. Lead-off hitter Nathan White reached on a single and after moving
around on two wild pitches, he scored on Dylan Smith’s single. Smith
later scored on William Bradley’s one-out RBI  single.

“We got key hits and it was just a great baseball game,” Leap said.

With only two district games remaining, Leap says his squad controls
their own destiny. “If we take care of our business we’ll be alright.”

It was the Patriots third consecutive 1-run district victory as Park
View came from behind last Friday to defeat Dominion 9-8 and a week ago
the Patriots edged Loudoun County 1-0 in 11 innings.

Heritage (6-5, 9-6) skipper Ryan Price was pleased with how his team
continued to battle even in the late innings, but wished it was spread
out a little more throughout the game.

“We’ve been pretty good in the seventh inning all year,” he said,
“and anytime you’ve got Griffin on the mound you’re thinking it’s going
to be a low-scoring ballgame. We were excited to see a pitching
change,” Price added. “Griffin shut us down all day. We figured we’d
put something together, but just came up a little short.”
