Sterling
(Apr. 30, 2008) – The Park View High School girls tennis team came
oh-so-close to finishing an undefeated regular season, defeating Broad
Run Tuesday, 5-4, in a continuation match, only to have the Spartans
come back to win, 5-4, in the final match of the AA Dulles District
season.

The Patriots (13-1, 15-1) are still district regular
season champions for the first time in school history and have a bid
into the regional tournament but PV will first have to face Broad Run
(9-5) again Thursday at 3 p.m. in the distirct tournament semifinals.
Heritage (11-3) will host Loudoun County (11-3) in the other semifinal
after the Pride won a coin flip to break the tie for second place. The
winner of the tournament or runner-up if the Patriots prevail will also
advance to the Region II tournament.

Finals are set for Friday at Potomac Falls High School.

Leesburg (Apr. 24, 2008) – The last time Park View and Loudoun County played in softball it was a tight 2-1 win by the Raiders but Thursday’s AA Dulles District contest at LC High School was a wild affair with 23 runs and 39 hits. And when the last scorekeeper’s pencil was down to a nub, Park View emerged with a  13-10 victory.

The win essentially leaves the Patriots and Raiders tied for second place behind undefeated Broad Run as both teams now have two losses.

Thursday’s affair was wild enough that the final hit total ranged anywhere from 32 to 39 hits and the miscue total ranged anywhere from eight to 15 errors, depending on which scorebook you took a peep at.

The game was peacefully tied at 2-2 when PV broke it open with six runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth inning to take a whopping 12-2 lead. LC, ranked this week No. 4 in the latest Washington Post poll, however, showed its mettle, by coming back to score six times in the bottom of the fifth but the margin was too great to overcome.

Only three of the Raider 10 runs were earned as PV had a run of sloppy play in the field. Laura Heironimus went the distance and got the win to improve her record to 5-2.

PV had more than enough offense to offset the errors with Robin Heironimus, Emily Garcia, Sam Louk and Brittany Griffin all collecting three hits.  Griffin drove in three runs with two doubles.

Reported PV coach Ed Abner: “As the softball pundits are apt to say, sometimes you take the W and move on—it wasn’t pretty but it’s a W.”

The Raiders also had plenty of offense on the night with 19 hits, five stolen bases and three walks. Highlighting the Raider attack were:

Rochelle Latka was 3-5, with 3 singles, two SB, 1 run and a RBI

Holly Norris was 3-4 with 3 singles, 1 SB, 1 BB,  and 2 RBI’s

Hope Flanagan was 3-4, with a doubles and 2 singles, and a RBI

Lindsey Packard was 4-4, with 2 doubles, 2 singles and a RBI

Megan Lindsey was 2-5 with 2 singles

Taylor Grimmell was 1-2, adding a 2 run double in the fifth and 2 BB

Rachel Wigfield had 2 singles and a run

Darkness Suspends Broad Run’s Bid to Upend Dulles District Girls Tennis Champ Park View

By: Dan Sousa

Ashburn
(Apr. 25, 2008) – Darkness put a halt to Broad Run High School’s bid to
put a dent Park View’s undefeated girls tennis season. The
regular-season champion Patriots (12-0 in district, 14-0 overall) are
leading the Spartans, 4-3, but BR is up in the No. 1 doubles with a
healthy 8-3 lead and the No. 3 doubles is deadlocked at 7-7. No word on
the continuation. These two teams will play again next Tuesday to
finish the regular season and then most likely on Thursday in a
district tournament semifinal match-up. LC (8-3) and Heritage (8-3) both won Thursday and have hopes for a district tournament semifinal home match in a likely grudge match between the two Leesburg schools.

Woods Wednesday.

5-4 winner over Potomac Falls Wednesday, at 8-4.
