Friday Night Scoreboard: Nov. 7, 2008

AAA Northern Region Division 5 Playoffs (Quarterfinals)

Stone Bridge 58, Thomas Jefferson 7
Skinny: Just two weeks after beating TJ 70-7, the Bulldogs faced the Colonials again, this time in the first round of the Northern Region playoffs. It was SB all the way as the Bulldogs led 23-0 in the first quarter. John Bladel stepped in for injured Patrick Thompson again at QB and threw two TD passes and 188 yards. The SB defense held TJ to minus-89 yards rushing! SB piled up 486 total yards.
Up next: Mount Vernon for the Bulldogs

Mount Vernon 17, Washington-Lee 10
James Madison 28, Yorktown 7
Edison 37, R.E. Lee 7

AAA Northern Region Division 6 Playoffs (Quarterfinals)
Chantilly 47, Annandale 38
Westfield 41, Herndon 22
Oakton 30, South County 13
West Springfield 72, Woodson 47

AA Dulles District (regular season)

Loudoun County 27, Heritage 21
Skinny: Raiders clinch a playoff bid for the first time since 1999 and in just second season after coach Todd Hill took over an 0-10 Raider team. LC senior Andrew Walczak, behind a workhorse offensive line, gained 194 yards on 33 attempts as LC grounded out the victory with 60 running plays that gained a total of 269 yards. Heritage, playing without senior standout RB Ross Madison, was limited to nine yards rushing on 18 plays and in coach Wes Driskill’s final game in charge of the Pride program, his team turned the ball over three times in its own end and all three led to LC touchdowns. County earns a rematch against undefeated Broad Run in Ashburn next Friday in the first round of the Region II Division 4 playoffs.

Briar Woods 61, Freedom 23
Skinny: Falcons win the annual “Bird Bowl” against a feisty Eagle squad. Luke Braatan tossed three TD passes in the first half to lead Freedom to a 23-21 advantage but BW wore down the Freedom defense, scoring 40 unaswered points after the break. Braatan finished with 241 yards passing. Falcon freshman QB Edwin Mends had his best game yet, throwing for 194 yards and four TDs. BW RB Ray Taliaferro rushed for 204 yards and two more scores. For the second straight year, BW is headed to the Region II Division 3 playoffs with a likely date next Friday at Monticello.

Broad Run 39, Park View 26
Skinny: The Spartans wrapped up their second straight unbeaten 10-0 regular season and homefield advantage in the Region II Division 4 playoffs. Spartans displayed their big play weapons early in this win, with T.J. Peeler going 56 yards for a score on BR’s first offensive play and then Chris Jessop hitting Adrian Flemming on a 69-yard TD on the Spartans second offensive play of the contest. BR built leads of 25-0 and 32-7 in this game. Spartans likely will host LC in the playoffs next Friday.

Potomac Falls 48, Dominion 10
Skinny: This game was so big … it was played at two schools! Honest … the lights went out at Dominion in the third quarter and the entire game was then moved to Potomac Falls and finished on the Panthers home field. Now that is a first! PF should host a Region II Division 4 playoff game next week with James Wood the likely opponent.

AAA Cedar Run District (regular season)
Battlefield 42, Loudoun Valley 0
Stonewall Jackson 40, Culpeper 6
Liberty 28, Fauquier 21
Osbourn vs. Osbourn Park
