LoudounPrepSports Tuesday Night Scoreboard

Just a quick look at the scores from Tuesday … tune back in Wednesday as we do a big Monday-Tuesday round-up …

Tuesday was a night of extra action as the Loudoun County girls soccer team ended Broad Run’s 29-game winning streak with a scoreless tie in Ashburn. This comes one night after the Broad Run softball team had its 61-game winning streak halted by Stone Bridge. The Spartans bounced back with a dramatic win in extra innings at Loudoun County as Haley Johnson smacked her career first home run over the fence … in the ninth inning for the 3-2 win. Also in softball, Briar Woods, Potomac Falls and Park View all earned shutout wins, as did Stone Bridge and Valley won.

In baseball it was extra innings as Briar Woods beat Heritage in eight, 5-4 and Park View did the same to Dominion, also in eight, 5-4. Loudoun County used a bases-clearing double to break a 1-1 tie to beat BR, 4-1 and PF cruised against Freedom, 11-1. In a bit of a shocker … Stone Bridge fell to Marshall 11-0 a night after beating highly-ranked Chantilly. Valley also fell.

In boys soccer it is a real scramble as all four teams tied at 2-1 going into the night … lost! Heritage (losing to Briar Woods 1-0), Freedom (to PF 2-0), Broad Run (to LC 3-2 after leading 2-0) and Dominion (losing to PV 3-0) all fall to 2-2. PF also moves to 2-2 to make a 5-way tie behind frontrunner Park View, now four points clear of the pack. (5-way is also the best way to have Cincinnati chili by the way … I may be hungry) …

In other girls soccer, Heritage beat BW and PF edged Freedom … the others have not reported yet.

In lax, Stone Bridge swept TJ.

Here are all the scores we have …

Dan Sousa was at the softball and boys soccer at LC, so check back for videos and photos plus the game stories …

Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Bats Off
— Yorktown CF Bill Edgar gets a bizarre ground out to the pitcher in the Patriots’ 8-4 win over the Generals.
Koko with the K.O., K.O. — Ram junior Alex “Koko” Makumbi scored back-to-back goals in the 66th and 69th minutes to cap a hat trick in Robinson’s 3-1 road victory over rival Westfield.
Zurn and Go — In the Montgomery County Publics vs. Privates All-Star Game, St. Andrews senior Alexander Zurn sinks a filthy and-one layup in traffic. But the Publics won the VOLi Sports All-Star Challenge, 108-97.

No. 10 — Seppi Slide
Prince George’s County, Maryland  — In an 8-5 win for Eleanor Roosevelt over High Point, Raider 3B Luke Seppi goes all-out to catch this high pop-up in foul territory, sliding to retire the batter.

No. 9 –Bryner Bases-Clearing Two-Bagger
S.M.A.C., Maryland — Calvert sophomore Ed Bryner unloads the bases with this two-out, three-run double to clinch a mercy-rule, 16-4 victory for the Cavaliers over the Hurricanes in a battle of previously-unbeaten teams in Frederick City.

No. 8 — K.C. Sunshine
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Park View junior K.C. Onyeador shows a nose for goal is genetic with back-to-back hat tricks for the Patriots. K.C. Onyeador’s cousin, Uche Onyeador, holds the Virginia high school record with 127 career goals, including a single-season record 42 as a junior, and plays at Georgetown. K.C. is on pace to obliterate the Park View school record for career goals.

No. 7 –Meet in the Middel

Montgomery County, Maryland — Churchill senior Parker Middel gets back-to-back bone-shattering hits on would-be Wootton defenders. But the Patriots retaliated further down the countdown.

No. 6 –Hurricane James
S.M.A.C., Maryland — This early-season match-up between Northern and Huntingtown, the winner was poised to put itself in the driver’s seat in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. The Hurricanes called shotgun and put the Pats in the trunk. Huntingtown senior Peter Athens and Mike James scored five and six goals, respectively, in its 20-8 win to move to 3-0.

No. 5 –Great Wahl
Northern Region, Virginia — West Springfield and Lake Braddock entered this Patriot District season-opener ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the Northern Region Baseball Coaches’ Association poll. Spartan junior Bobby Wahl made sure his squad would retain that top spot for another week with a complete game one-hitter, striking out 13 Bruins, while only walking one.

No. 4 –– Ladies’ Night
Powell Precision
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Broad Run striker Valerie Powell used the outside of her left foot to float this perfectly-placed shot over the Stone Bridge goalkeeper for the game-winning tally in the Spartans 2-1 road win. Broad Run is the defending Virginia AA state champion, returned 16 players from that unit and won its 26th-consecutive game thanks to Powell’s heroics.

Costello-Mays Caps Win
Prince William County, Virginia — Woodbridge and Battlefield met in a rematch of last year’s Northwest Region final, a 3-2 penalty-kick win for the Vikings. This time around, Woodbridge left little doubt, with a 4-0 win, highlighted by two goals from Kristen Lybert and capped by this 61st-minute free kick by Kellsey Costello-Mays.

No. 3 –Doran Doran
Montgomery County, Maryland — Wootton sophomore attackman Christopher Doran gets revenge for Play No. 7 in the Top 10 with this behind-the-head goal as the Patriots locked up a 10-3 win over the Bulldogs.

No. 2 –Double Lutz
Prince William County, Virginia — After Battlefield blew a three-goal lead at the start of the fourth period by allowing five Forest Park goals, Bobcat senior Chris Lutz scores the game-winning, double-overtime goal to beat the Bruins, 7-6. The home win avenges a 16-5 home loss for Battlefield to Forest Park last season, the Bobcats’ worst of the year.

No. 1 — Clay-Born to Run
Montgomery County, MarylandDamascus sophomore Cassie Clayborne hit an inside-the-park grand slam as part of her team’s 10-2 win over Blair. The Hornets’ current No. 5-hitter was in the lead-off spot last season and demonstrated both her speed and power on this Play of the Week.

The Skinny: Benny Piccolo reports that Sr. Nick Fialdini pitched six strong innings striking out 10 as Stone Bridge shut out South Lakes to raise their record to 3-1.

In the fifth, Stone Bridge scored one more run when Rositano led off with a walk , Michael Prince followed with a base hit to left and Johnny Bladel walked to load the bases with no outs.  South Lakes changed pitchers bringing in Sophmore Will Sweet to replace Fr. Nick Beaulac who had a solid performance.  Sweet balked on his first pitch allowing Rositano to score but buckled down and got out of the jam without allowing any more runs.

Nick Fialdini continued to keep the South Lakes hitters in check with his fastball threw the sixth and then flame thrower Johnny Bladel came on in the seventh and slammed the door striking out the side for the save.

Fowler followed with a single to plate Ball to make it a 3-0 contest, and senior Kelsey Young and sophomore Alex Fierszt added RBI singles later in the inning.

The Falcons padded their lead with three more runs in the fifth. Junior Hayley Olson reached on an error to start the inning and Fowler followed with a hard single off the third baseman’s glove. A wild pitch moved

both runners up, and sophomore Jillian Olson roped a single down the left field line to score her sister. An error on the play also allowed Fowler to score. Jillian Olson later came home on a groundout by

Dominguez.

These Baseball and Softball Panthers are for Real

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
Sterling (Mar. 30, 2009) – Make no mistake about it, these Panthers are for real.
The Potomac Falls High School baseall team silenced Park View Friday night on Jake Kline‘s near perfect gem of a 1-hitter and the Potomac Falls softball squad completed a historic week with a 3-0 win over host Park View.
While the baseball team’s 10-0 win Friday and 3-0 start is not a surprise — the Panthers are an experienced team and the Dulles Distrit’s frontrunner after coming within one game last year of making the state tournament — the softball team is 3-0 in district and has won four straight games with a roster that feature no seniors, just four juniors and 10 underclassmen.
Despite the youth movement, the Panthers came away with a pair over 3-0 wins last week over Loudoun County, a team that advanced to the state playoffs last season, and over Park View, in what is the first Panther victory over the Patriots softball in recent memory if not the first time in school history.
PF’s Hard-throwing sophomore Heather Kiefer picked up her fourth win of the season by spreading five hits around. She struck out seven with one walk. Park View sophomore Robin Heironimus is recovering from an injury and unable to pitch right now so the Patriots put freshman Brittney Moore in the pitching circle and she allowed seven hits — five of which came from the bats of sophomore Kayla Guttridge (3-for-3, run) and freshman Caitie McClay (2-for-3, run, RBI).
Also for the Panthers freshman Carlyn Hanzel doubled and freshman Lauren Fulcher was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Potomac Falls took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with Guttridge leading off with a single and moving to second on a wild pitch. McClay then drove in Guttridge with a single to right.
The Panthers added some insurance in the fifth inning with McClay reaching on an infield single. Fulcher walked and both runners advanced on an infield groundout. McClay hustled home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 and Fulcher scored on an overthrow to first base.
Park View had its chances, especially early when the Patriots loaded the bases against Kiefer in the first and third but the Panther soph was able to get the clutch outs.
PF was led defensively by third baseman Fulcher and shortstop junior Bonnie Pascal who combined for four putouts and eight assists. Hanzel also had two catches in center and PF junior catcher Courtney Sunderlaned picked off a runner.
The Patriots are also a young team this season with just two seniors, four juniors on the roster to go with four sophomores and two freshmen. One of the freshmen, Samanthan Thomas, had two hits in the loss.
Softball Scoreline: Potomac Falls 3, Park View 0
        1 2 3 4 5 6 7     R  H  E  LOB
PF    0 1 0 0 2 0 0     3   7  2    5
PV    0 0 0 0 0 0 0     0   5  1    7

Baseball: Kline Nearly Perfect in 1-Hitter over Patriots

Potomac Falls senior Jake Kline allowed one Park View runner to reach base Friday night and that was on an infield single in the first inning that traveled eight feet from home plate. The Panthers (3-0 overall, 3-0 in district) had more than enough run support for Kline’s gem with a 10-0 Dulles District victory.

On Park View’s only hit, Hayden Earley hit a 0-1 pitch that landed in front of home plate and stopped. The Panthers pitcher, catcher and third baseman all went to field it but nobody could make a play. Kline then stranded Earley at first by striking out Adam Flees and getting Johnny Mason to hit a comebacker to the mound.

Thhe Panther bats came out smoking with Ben Sweger leading off the game with a double to left field. He was sacrificed to second and scored on a shot to third off the bat of Rob Malan. Mike Spring followed with a double down the third base line and both runners preceded to score on passed balls to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.

Potomac Falls added a run in the third on two Patriot errors and then scored three more times in the fourth inning. Chris Pelto led off the fourth with a fly ball to right that was dropped for an error.  Sweger followed with a single to left. Chad McMichael then stroked an RBI single to right field  and Malan followed with an RBI double to left field.

After a walk and fielder’s choice, Ryan Miller collected his second hit of the game with a single to left and Matt Rubino walked to load the bases.  Eric Dimsey responded with an RBI single up the middle to make it 8–0 and that finished the night for PV starter Johnny Mason.

Sam Ryan came into pitch for Park View and pitched a smooth fivth before running into trouble in the sixth.  The Panthers added two more runs on hits by Miller, Rubino and Dimsey to make it 10-0.

Meanwhile, Kline was cruising through the game with 1-2-3 innings and registering 10 strikeouts and no walks. Kline was mixing his pitches masterfully with a good fastball, big breaking curve and an effective changeup to silence the Park View bats.

Park View falls to 1-3 in district and 1-4 overall. The Patriots host Herndon Monday night in a non-district affair and PF is back in action Tuesday with a distrit home date with Freedom.

Highlights: PFalls  Jacob Kline (1 hit shutout, 10 strikeouts, no walks), Ryan Miller (3-4) Ben Sweger (2-4, 2 runs scored), Matt Rubino (2-3, RBI) and Eric Dimsey (2-3, 2 RBI’s)

Dulles District First Week Report

LoudounPrepSports.com Dulles District Report

We take a look at the Dulles District standings in baseball, softball and boys and girls soccer after the first full week of play and a peak at upcoming games on Friday.

Note: With our move to DigitalSports, our standings are automatically updated once we input the scores after each night. If you haven’t checked out the sports central pages for each sport, please do so … here you can find standings, schedules, results and more for each sport. (Note: lacrosse has not started its district season and we are still updating tennis standings).

Schools Report … After the first week of play in baseball, softball and soccer … combined schools records:

1, Broad Run 9-0
2, Potomac Falls 5-1-2
3, Park View 4-4-1
4, Dominion 4-4
5, Loudoun County 3-4-1
6, Heritage 2-5-1
t7, Briar Woods 2-6
t7, Freedom 2-6

Baseball
The Skinny: Potomac Falls starting 2-0 is not a surprise but Broad Run, after opening 0-2 vs. non-district, is 3-0 with a young team. Briar Woods at 0-2 was a preseason favorite by some. Dominon sits at 2-0.
Standings
1, Broad Run 3-0
t2, Dominion 2-0
t2, Potomac Falls 2-0
4, Loudoun County 1-1
5, Park View 1-2
t6, Briar Woods 0-2
t6, Freedom 0-2
t6, Heritage 0-2

Friday: Heritage (0-2) visits Broad Run (3-0) in a big game for the Pride as they don’t want to fall in an 0-3 hole to start Dulles campaign … PF (2-0) is at Park View (1-2) in an all-Sterling affair … LC (1-1) visits unbeaten Dominion (2-0) … Freedom (0-2) is at Briar Woods (0-2) in a rivaly game with one team exiting with their first district win and the other in an 0-3 funk.

Softball
The Skinny: Meet the Old Boss, Same as the New Boss … you know “Who” as Broad Run is 2-0 — and on a 60-game winning streak — but how about Potomac Falls with a 2-0 start including an upset over LC on Tuesday … The middle of the standings — Park View, LC, Dominion, Briar Woods — can beat any team on any given night … this is the closest the district has been from top to bottom in years.
Standings
t1, Broad Run 2-0
t1, Potomac Falls 2-0
t3, Briar Woods 1-1
t3, Dominion 1-1
t3, Loudoun County 1-1
t3, Park View 1-1
t7, Freedom 0-2
t7, Heritage 0-2

Friday: Heritage (0-2) actually visits Broad Run (2-0) on Thurs. as the Spartans go to Richmond this weekend for a big tournament … Potomac Falls (2-0) in a big match-up at Park View (1-1) with Panthers given a chance to show Tuesday was not an upset … Loudoun County (1-1) looks to get back on track at Dominion (1-1) which lost 1-0 to BW on Tuesday … BW (1-1) hosts Freedom (0-2).

Boys Soccer
The Skinny: Broad Run sits on top of the table with six points (2-0) but six other teams already have points which trends towards a season in which no team will run away with the district title … After a tie against LC, Park View handled Heritage Tuesday in a rematch of last year’s district tournament title game that went into PK’s before the Patriots danced off with the title … How good is this district? BW at 0-2 is not going to finish winless in the Dulles by a longshot … Should be an entertaining year in boys soccer!
Standings (3 points for win, 1 point for tie)
1, Broad Run 6 points (2-0-0)
2, Park View 4 (1-0-1)
t3, Dominion 3 (1-1-0)
t3, Freedom 3 (1-1-0)
t3, Heritage 3 (1-1-0)
t3, Potomac Falls 3 (1-1-0)
7, Loudoun County 1 (0-1-1)
8, Briar Woods 0 (0-2-0)

Friday: Heritage (3 points) can erase Tuesday’s defeat at PV with a game at district leader BR (6 points) … Park View (4 points) hosts PF (3 points) in a rivalry game … BW (0 points) looks to get its first point against rival Freedom (3 points) … LC (1 point), with a history of slow starts in district the past several years, is a Dominion (3 points).

Girls Soccer
The Skinny: Broad Run girls are right where they have been for the past three years, at the top of the Dulles standings … Heritage and LC both have four points and these two Leesburg schools should fight it out with BW for that second regional playoff spot behind the powerhouse Spartans … Freedom is vastly improved and will upset some schools this season.
Standings (3 ponts for win, 1 points for tie)
1, Broad Run 6 points (2-0-0)
t2, Heritage 4 (1-0-1)
t2, Loudoun County 4(1-0-1)
t4, Briar Woods 3 (1-1-0)
t4, Freedom 3 (1-1-0)
6, Potomac Falls 2 (0-0-2)
t7, Dominion 0 (0-2-0)
t7, Park View 0 (0-2-0)

Friday: Heritage (4 points) has a shot at frontrunner Broad Run (6 points) when they host the Spartans … Dominion (0 points) has a tough task on the road against LC (4 points) … PF (2 points) looks to gain its first W of the year when the Panthers host PV (0 points) … and the feistiest match-up of the night pits BW (3 points) at rival Freedom (3 points).

Spring Sports Round-up: March 20-21

Favorite team not covered? Maybe your coach didn’t get the LPS Monkey a Christmas gift this year? … Just teasing … we “print” everything sent in … if you want to contribute a score, a report, some photos, a video or tips for turning around the U.S. economy … email Dan Sousa at dsousa@digitalSports.com

Dan Sousa, LPS Editor and official LPS Monkey manager, has added his “The Skinny” to the results from Friday and Saturday (bascially his two cents!) … check back as we update it with info. sent in from coaches and parents …

Fri. March 20

Baseball
Dominion 5, Freedom 4 (11 innings)
The Skinny: Chris Taylor with a 3-run home run in the seventh inning — on an 0-2 pitch! — ties the game and then he picks up the win in relief.

Titan coach Jay Raines reports:

Dominion jumped out 1-0 in the first and then went flat until the 7th. After some miscues in the 5th the Titians saw themselves down 4-1.

In the bottom of the seventh: Leadoff Jonthan Knight drew a walk and Ryan Doyle (3 for 4) also drew a walk. Up came Chris Taylor who with one swing tied the game with a 3 run blast.

Dominion had numerous chances in extra innings, but could not pnch acros a run. Finally in the 11th, after an Anthony Bartolotti walk and Matt Sherrill single, Nick DeMott hit a slow roller to short with 2 outs. The play on the run scooted past the 1st baseman and Bartolotti raced home for the win…

Dominion had solid pitching. Sophomore Doyle had 6 K’s in 5 innings (he started)

Bartolotti came in relief to hold the game where it ws. He was solid as well with 7 K’s in 3 innings

And then Taylor came in and had 8 K’s in the last 3 innings.

Eagle coach Chris Bourassa reports:

The Dominion Titans defeated the Freedom Eagles 5-4 in 11 innings on a bitterly cold evening last night in Sterling.  Freedom took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning behind 6 solid innings pitched by Ali Moosvi.  Chris Taylor’s 3-run home run off Anthony Perez tied the game sending it into extra innings. After 3 scoreless extra frames, Dominion pushed across a 2-out unearned run in the bottom of the 11th on Freedom’s only error of the night.  Taylor earned the win pitching 3 innings of shut out ball, striking out 8 and only allowing 1 Eagle base hit. Ryan Doyle led the Titans with 3 hits while Jeremy Rilko (4-4 in stolen bases, 2 runs scored), Kyle Severns and Kyle Groome each had 2 hits for the Eagles

Bonus JV coverage! The Freedom Eagles JV baseball team won their third straight game of the season last night, all by shut out, over visiting Loudoun County High School, 7-0.  Shayan Malik pitched 6 strong innings to earn the win for Freedom.

Potomac Falls 4, Heritage 2
The Skinny: Jacob Kline on the mound is one major reason that many pick the Panthers to win the Dulles District title this year and Kline was just fine on Friday with the win.

A PF fan reports:

On a cold blustery night in Leesburg, Jacob Kline out pitched Andrew Zarobila to lead the Panthers to a victory over Heritage High School.  Both Kline and Zarobila gave up 6 hits and no earned runs in the pitchers duel but the Panthers took advantage of a 3 run second inning to secure the victory.

Both teams started the game with double plays but in different manners.  Heritage turned a routine double play after sophomore Ben Sweger stroked a single up the middle with one out. Rob Malan followed with another ball up the middle that Brenton Peters fielded, stepped on the bag and completed the throw to 1st base to end the inning.

Potomac Falls double play went a little differently. Peters led off with a walk and Trey Reed followed with a shot to third.  Matt Rubino fielded the ball cleanly and threw to Sweger at 2nd base for the force. Sweger had no play to 1st base but Reed was called out at first as Peters failed to slide into second and interference was ruled on the play. Kline then struck out Shane Carrera to end the inning.

In the 2nd inning, the Panthers pushed 3 runs across the plate. Mike Spring led off with a walk and advanced to 2nd on a ground out. After Ryan Miller grounded out to the pitcher, Eric Dimsey hit a ball to 3rd. Reed’s throw to 1st was in the dirt for an error and Spring scored from 2nd base. Chris Pelto then hit a single to center and advanced on the throw to 3rd.  With Dimsey at 3rd and Pelto on 2nd, Rubino followed with a shot down the 1st base line for a 2 run double to put the Panthers up 3–0.

The Pride came right back with 2 runs in their half of the inning. Nick Clayton led off with a walk and promptly stole 2nd base.  After a fly out and strikeout, Daniel Gershen hit a long fly ball to rightfield that turned into a triple and he was then knocked in by Mitchell Bowers single to center.

Both pitchers settled down until the 7th inning when Potomac Falls pushed another run home.  Rubino led off with a walk and was sacrificed to 2nd on a bunt by Chad McMichael.  Sweger then followed with a single to right.  Malan then lined a single to centerfield to score Rubino with the final run of the game.

Highlights:

Panthers: Jacob Kline completed game win, (7 innings, 1 BB, 8 K’s) Ben Sweger 2-4, Rob Malan 2-4 and Matt Rubino 1-2, 2 RBI’s,

Pride: Andrew Zarobila (7 innings, 2 BB’s, 2 K’s), Nick Clayton 2-2, Daniel Gershen 1-3 triple,

Broad Run 9, Briar Woods 4
The Skinny: The Spartans came in struggling for runs in an 0-2 start but the 2-time defending district champions scored plenty behind sophomore pitcher Brandon Craft.
Loudoun County 3, Park View 2
The Skinny: The Raiders are young but so are the Patriots.
Osbourn Park 7, Loudoun Valley 3
The Skinny: Vikings open up their second baseball season in the AAA Cedar Run District with a loss to the Yellow Jackets.

Sonny Cachuela reports:

The Loudoun Valley Vikings baseball team traveled to Osbourn Park for a Cedar Run district game losing to the Yellow Jackets 7-3. Through the first 3 innings, it was a pitcher’s duel between Valley senior Kevin Rinek and Osbourn Park southpaw Matt Wainman.  Rinek gave up only one hit until the fourth inning while Wainman did not allow any.  With two outs in the top of the 4th inning, senior catcher Wes Walker hit a single to left field.  With freshman JJ Sardie in to pinch run, junior 3rd baseman Alex Owens hit a towering double to left field plating Sardie for a 1-0 Valley lead. The next hitter grounded out to end the frame.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, Osbourn Park would score 5 runs to take the lead.  Rightfielder Nate White would hit a sacrifice fly to score Josh Swirchak for the first run.  Designated hitter Andrew Green hit a single and 3rd baseman Sam Fox drew a walk.  Shortstop Nick Walker doubled scoring both Green and Fox.  With a runner on 2nd base, catcher Devin White hit a two run homer making the score 5-1.  The Vikes would add a run in the 5th inning on a solo shot by junior 2nd baseman Daniel Fleming.  In the top of the 6th inning, the Vikes scored their last run of the game aided by an error.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Yellow Jackets scored two more runs to put the game away.  Wainman pitched 5 innings allowing only two runs on three hits while striking out eight hitters.  Ryan Weatherholtz pitched the final two innings to preserve the win for Osbourn Park.

Osbourn Park travels on Tuesday, March 24th to play Stonewall Jackson HS.  Loudoun Valley travels to play Liberty HS on Tuesday, March 24th and plays its home opener against Westfield HS on Wednesday, March 25th.

McLean 4, Stone Bridge 3
The Skinny: When is the last time that the Bulldogs lost to McLean in baseball and softball on the same night?

Benny Piccolo reports for Bulldogs:

Jr. Sean Fitzgerald struck out 9 and pitched a complete game in a 4-3 win over Stone Bridge on a blustery night in Ashburn.

McLean jumped on Stone Bridge starter Sr. Nick Fialdini (1-1) for two runs in the first.  Fialdini struck out Jr. Riley Beiro to start the game and got Jr. Chris Russo to hit a grounder to second but Sr. Patrick Thompson dropped the throw from second baseman Spenser Rositano.  Russo stole second and scored on a double by Fitzgerald to deep right. Jr. Dennis Buckley followed with a single to left scoring Fitzgerald.

Stone Bridge came right back in the bottom of the first.   Sophomore Rositano led off with a walk.  After Sr. Michael Prince flied out to center, Sr. Johnny Bladel singled to right with Rositano going to third.  Bladel then stole second with Rositano scoring when the throw sailed into center field.  Jr. Taylor Lambke reached on an error by the third baseman and then J.J. White tripled to deep right scoring Bladel and Lambke.

After a wild first, both pitchers set down the sides in order in the second.  In the third Russo got a one out base hit to right, Fitzgerald walked and after striking out Buckley, Fialdini hit Sr. Eric Payne to load the bases.  Sr. Brett Bleiweis then delivered a single up the middle scoring Russo and tying the game at 3.

Fitzgerald again set down the side in the third.  McLean started the fourth with Jr. Tim Terry drawing a walk and Sophomore Colin Cannon singled to right with Terry going to third.  Beiro then hit a fly ball to right and with Terry tagging up Prince made a perfect throw to gun him down at the plate and shut down a McLean rally.  Fitzgerald again set the Bulldogs down in order in the fourth.  In the fifth after getting Fitzgerald to fly out to right, Fialdini gave up singles to Buckley and Payne.  After Bleiweis flew out to left, Ghanam singled up the middle.  Centerfielder Bladel threw a strike to home but Buckley slid around the tag to score the go ahead run.

Fitzgerald continue his strong performance setting down the Bulldogs in order in the fifth and sixth.  Bladel came on and held the Highlanders in the sixth and seventh.  In the bottom of the seventh Stone Bridge loaded the bases with Lambke getting to first on a swinging third strike that got by the catcher.  Lambke went to second when White ground out to the second baseman.  Jr. Dillon Berger then pinch hit for Sr. Bryce Williams and delivered a single over the second baseman’s head.  Lambke rounded third but held up. Jr. Spencer Brookbank then hit a slow roller and with Lambke running, Fitzgerald scooped it up and threw out Lambke at the plate.  Sr. Pat Piccolo got hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Rositano swung threw a knee high fastball on the outside corner, the 116th pitch for Fitzgerald, to end the game.

Broad Run 3, Briar Woods 0

The Skinny: You know the Spartans unbelievable two-year winning streak is going to come to an end some day … just not this night.

Spartan coach Ed Steele reports:

Broad Run defeated Briar woods 3-0. Judy Betz and Anna Blessing combined for a 1 hit shut out. Betz picked up the win with 5 hitless innings and Blessing gave up only one hit while striking out three in two innings of relief. Kate Sims and Jenn Soroka had two hits each and between them scored all three runs. Megan Waterman and Jenny Kramer each had single and an RBI. Second baseman Reagan Doiron anchored a strong infield defense and Blessing made two spectacular catches in centerfield. The Spartans are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the District.

Falcon assistant Chris Starke reports:

Briar Woods got another strong pitching performance from junior Kate Fowler, but the Falcon offense managed just one hit in a 3-0 loss to two-time defending state champion Broad Run Friday night in Ashburn.

Broad Run (2-0, 1-0 Dulles District), which extended its winning streak to 59 games, capitalized on two errors, a rolling single up the middle and an infield single to plate a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second. The Spartans then added another run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single.

Those three runs were more than enough for Spartan hurlers Judy Betz and Anna Blessing. Betz tossed five innings of no-hit ball, striking out three. She worked around a hit batter in the second, a one-out walk in the third and a lead-off walk in the fifth. Blessing struck out three over the last two innings to earn the save. She allowed a one-out double to Falcon sophomore Kristina Karagiorgis in the sixth.

Briar Woods (1-1, 0-1) was aggressive at the plate but hit into 11 ground outs. The Falcons had a runner at second in both the second and third innings and also had a runner at third in the fifth but came away empty. In the fourth, freshman Macy Jones and sophomore Jillian Olson sent screaming liners into the left centerfield gap, but Blessing made outstanding running catches of both shots to keep the Falcons at bay.

Fowler allowed eight hits — including seven singles — and just one earned run in a complete-game effort. She struck out three and walked one.

Loudoun County 8, Park View 6
The Skinny: It is always entertaining when the Patriots and Raiders mix it up in softball.

LC fans reports:

The Loudoun County High School girls softball team hopes to be a strong contender for the Dulles District title this Spring.  The Raiders are off to a good start with a  8-6 win in their Dulles District opener against Park View on Friday night.

The Raiders were off to a 6-2 lead in the early innings, turning some scattered base hits into runs in the first inning.  In the second inning senior Taylor Grimmel hit a bases loaded 3-run double to have the Raiders off to a nice start.

Park View did make a run at the Raiders in the middle innings scoring six runs.  Going into the top of the seventh inning the Raiders were up 8-6.  Senior center fielder Rochelle Latka made a diving catch in center field to get the lead batter out and the Raiders wwere able to hold the Patriots scoreless in the seventh to notch the win.   Senior shortstop Holly Norris provided strong defensive leadership for the infield throughout the game.

The Raiders put forth a well rounded offensive effort in the game.  Latka was 2-4 with 2 runs scored, senior pitcher Lindsey Holtz was 3-4 with an RBI, Norris was 2-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI, senior second baseman Rachel Wigfield added a hit and a run scored, and sophmore outfielder Erin Ertel contributed a hit and a run scored.
