No. 10 –Barry, Barry Extraordinary
Northern Region, Virginia
— In a match-up between teams way too good to happen in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament, Robinson senior Audrey Barry slotted home the game-winning, triple-overtime golden goal in the 91st minute to lift her side over Stone Bridge, 2-1.

No. 9 –Rams Slammed    Save    Winning PK
Northern Region, Virginia
— Robinson, with its penalty-kick loss in the Concorde finals, fell into the Group of Death for the Northern Region Tournament. But after surviving a triple-overtime scare by Stone Bridge in the first round, the defending state champs traveled to West Springfield to meet one of the most dominant sides in Northern Virginia. The Spartans and Rams were tied at one after regulation and four overtimes and went to penalty kicks. On the sixth kick, West Springfield senior goalkeeper Beth Anne Nowak came up with the save and, on the next try, senior birthday girl Julia Stejskal blasted home the game-winner.

No. 8 — Comeback City
Northern Region, Virginia
— Last week, in the Concorde District championship, Robinson trailed Chantilly by two with 5 minutes, 30 seconds remaining and scored three unanswered goals to hand the Chargers their first loss of the year. Last Wednesday, in the Northern Region final, the Rams trailed by three goals with 8:55 to go and scored four unanswered goals to win the regional title, 10-9.

No. 7 – Colella Gem

Northern Region, Virginia
— In the first round of the Northern Region Tournament, Chantilly senior — and second-team All-Region member — John Colella threw a complete-game, one-hitter at Stone Bridge, as the Chargers beat the Bulldogs, 3-2, to advance to the regional quarterfinals.

No. 6 –Patriots Snap Spartan Streak
Loudoun County, Virginia
Entering its semifinal match-up with Park View, Broad Run softball had won 67 consecutive Dulles District softball games. But the Patriots snapped the streak with a 3-0 win, riding a complete-game shutout by sophomore pitcher Robin Heironimus.

No. 5Out of the Woods
Loudoun County, Virginia
— In its first year of existence, 2006, Briar Woods softball went 0-for-the season, losing every game. The next year, it won once. But, in 2009, The Falcons stepped completely into new, uncharted territory, winning the league championship. On the legs of a game-winning single by sophomore Alexandra Fierszt, Briar Woods beat Park View, 4-3, in the finals on Friday.

No. 4 –Dern Good Performance
Northern Region, Virginia
— Lake Braddock junior southpaw Brian Derner owned the mound in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament at Mount Vernon on Monday. He threw four perfect innings — including 34 of his 46 pitches for strikes — before coach Jody Rutherford pulled him to preserve his arm for later in the week. He struck out 7 of the 12 batters he faced. Rutherford said pre-game that Derner, who suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder while snowboarding last winter, was due for a breakout game.

No. 3 –One and Dun’ham
Northern Region, Virginia
— South County junior pitcher Chelsea Dunham dominated the center circle on Friday, twirling a 13-strikeout, 1-hit complete-game shutout as the Stallions won their third-straight Patriot District championship. South County beat Annandale, 1-0.

No. 2 –Madness?
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Broad Run girls’ soccer continues its historic tear. The Spartans, ranked No. 4 nationally by ESPNRise, are 18-0-1 after winning the Dulles District title. Broad Run beat the only team, Loudoun County, that earned a point against it, 2-1, thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter and Rachel Tharp in overtime. In its 2-0, championship win over Heritage, Hunter earned her 58th career clean sheet, a VHSL record.

No. 1 — Bailey’s Crossroads
Northern Region, Virginia
— On Wednesday night, Langley lacrosse was making its seventh all-time appearance in the Northern Region championship — its fourth under current coach Earl Brewer — but had yet to win a title. It took two overtimes, but the Saxons earned their historic, 6-5 over the Rams when junior attackman Ethan Bailey scored this game-winner with 3:02 left in the second, sudden-victory overtime period.

Briar Woods Softball Makes Believers Out of Dulles District

By Dan Sousa

LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

Leesburg (May 22, 2009) – “I believe. You believe. We
believe in you!”

The chant was steady from the Briar Woods High School
softball dugout Thursday as the Falcons kept a positive outlook despite
watching their first inning 3-run lead evaporate against a hard-hitting Park
View squad in the AA Dulles District title game at Heritage High School.

The Patriots had the bases loaded and no outs in the top of
the fifth inning with the score tied at 3-3, but believe the Falcons did as sophomore
relief pitcher Kristina Karagiorgis managed to get out of the jam on only two
pitches and amazingly without the ball being put into play as two Park View
runners were tagged out on the same crazy, YouTube worthy rundown and then
Karagiorgis got a strikeout to end the threat.

Briar Woods – a 4-year-old program that had gone winless in
2006 and overall just 2-40 over the first two seasons – was just one game away
from qualifying for regionals for the first time and the Falcons were up to the
task as junior catcher Jillian Olson doubled to start the bottom of the sixth
inning and then scored on No. 9 hitter, sophomore Alexandra Fierszt’s single up
the middle.

“I just went in the batter’s box saying I’m going to hit the
ball as hard as I can,” said Fierszt.  “It
was the best feeling in the world.”

Karagiorgis, who stepped in for junior starter Kate Fowler
in the fifth inning after Park View had tied the game, retired the side in
order in the seventh inning – the first time all night that the Patriots went
quietly. In fact, Park View out-hit Briar Woods in the game, 8-6, and Patriot
sophomore pitcher Robin Heironimus had six strikeouts with no walks and six
hits allowed but six Patriot fielding errors – allowing two of the four runs to
cross unearned – were too much to overcome and when the final out was squeezed
it touched off an emotional celebration.

“Totally in disbelief,” is how Briar Woods coach Jennifer
Traina described the feeling. “Every couple of minutes I think ‘did we just win
the district tournament?’.”

There were smiles and there were hugs and there were tears –
especially from the Falcons’ lone senior, Kelsey Young, who celebrated her
birthday on Thursday in ways she could not have imagined during the early days
of the Briar Woods program.

“Losing 40-0 my freshman year and then coming away with the
district title this year …”, said Young as her teammates serenaded her with “Happy
Birthday” in the background. “I really can’t put it into words.”

The Patriots (13-10) were almost as young as the Falcons
(17-4) and had upset top seed Broad Run in the semifinals to set up the winner
clinches region as well as tournament title showdown.

Briar Woods, with the help of two fielding errors, jumped
out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Speedy Falcon leadoff hitter , junior
Holly Dominguez beat out an infield hit and Karagiorgis reached on an error.
Both runners scored on freshman Macy Jones’ double to make it 2-0. Later Fowler
helped her own cause with an RBI single to right field to score Jones.

Park View slowly cut into the lead with a run in the second,
a run in the third and then a run in the fifth.

The Patriots left runners on base in each of the first six
innings, stranding a total of seven.

Junior Samantha Gleason got the Pats going in the second
with a single. She was erased on a fielder’s choice at second on junior Rebecca
Patton’s grounder. Patton scooted home on junior Brittany Griffin’s RBI double.
Fowler got the next two hitters to leave Griffin at second.

Fierszt reached on an error in the bottom of the second and
moved around to third but Heironimus got back-to-back infield short pop outs to
end the inning.

Patriot sophomore Ally Rupard (2-for-3, two runs score)
singled with one out in the third and then scored on a double by Heironimus.
Again, Fowler got back-to-back outs to end the inning, the final out coming on
a nice catch by Karagiorgis in left field, as she had to track the ball down
headed towards the fence.

In the fourth inning, Patton singled for PV and stole second
but when a third strike got away from Olson with one out, she tried to take
third as the batter raced to first. Olson alertly fired to third and Patton was
tagged out.

In the fifth inning, Rupard doubled deep and after a walk to
Heironimus, she scored on a single to left by junior Miranda Kinney.

Fowler threw one pitch to Gleason before Karagiorgis was
summoned in from left.  Gleason hit a
grounder that appeared to result in a force out of a courtesy runner at third
but the runner was ruled safe and the bases were loaded with no outs and a tie
game.

A pitch then got away from Olson and the Patriot runner
tried to make it home. Several feet from the plate, it was evident that the
steal wouldn’t work and the runner headed back to third only the base was now
occupied by a teammate.

The runner was caught in a rundown between third and home
and tagged out by Olson (2-1-5-2 on the play). Olson then realized that the
runner that had move to third was now headed back to second, which was also
occupied. Another runner hung up, Olson ran at the runner and flipped to
Dominguez the shortstop for the second out of the strange play. One pitch
later, Karagiorgis registered a strikeout and just like that … two pitches and
three outs.

Park View extracted a little revenge in the bottom of the
fifth inning as Karagiorgis tripled to lead off but was cut down at the plate
trying to score on a ground ball to first. Later with runners on the corners,
Heironimus got out of the fix on a line drive to short.

Karagiorgis cruised in the final two innings, allowing only
one ball out of the infield and catching all three batters in the seventh
off-balanced for pop ups.

Olson played the hero in the sixth with the leadoff double.
Junior Claire Bayles bunted Olson to third and Fierszt delivered much to the
delight of the Falcon faithful that truly believed.

“This is huge. We have come so far in our program,” said
Olson.

Briar Woods will now travel to Sherando  on Monday in the Region II quarterfinals at 3
p.m. Brentsville will play at Monticello in the other quarterfinal with Broad
Run and Orange both with byes.

Potomac Falls Girls Grab Region II Track and Field Title

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
Louisa (May 21, 2009) – Although the Potomac Falls High School girls captured the school’s first regional track and field title on Wednesday at Louisa, it didn’t come as a shock to Panther coach Courtney Cornwall.
“I ask my kids to be the best version of themselves every time they compete. That’s exactly what they do and our record this year proves it,””
Junior Christina Lee led the girls’ team with outstanding performances in both the 800 and the 1600 meters. Personal records were set by Nicole Fauteux in both hurdles, Jenn Richards in the shot put and Allie Dazcowski in high jump.
Lee not only took first in the 800 and 1600 meters but she led a 1-2-5 finish in the 800 that accumulated 20 of Potomac Falls 65.5 points. Ariana Jones finished just behind Lee, clocking 2:21.89 to Lee’s winning 2.21.69, and Kaitlyn Hunter took fifth.
In the 1600 it was another pulse-racing finish as Lee crossed at 5:11.30, just ahed of Western Albemarle’s Mattie Webb at 5:11.46 and Loudoun County’s Julie strange at 5:11.76. Strange was victorious in the 3200.
The Panthers finished 9.5 points clear of Western Albemarle and that was after the Warriors piled up 30 points in the pole vault — an event that Loudoun County athletes are not allowed to partcipate in.
Besides Lee, Fauteux was the biggest individual point getter for PF with a pair of third place finishes in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Richards took third in the shot for PF and the Panthers got points in the 4×800 relay with a second place finish — and that came after a Panther runner was jostled on the third leg — and a second place finish in the 4×400 with a 4:02.65, just behind Heritage’s winning 4:02.28.
“Our girls relay teams are always the most exciting for us because those girls give everything they’ve got and then a little more!,” said Cornwall.

Josh Hardin and Ryan Hagen led PF’s boys’ team in the 1600/3200 meters and 800/4×800 meters, respectively. Although Hagen couldn’t be his freshest for the Regionals 800, Cornwall says the senior is confident he will be at States and is excited for the opportunity to compete again.

“We have some tough races ahead of us. If they go to States with their heads and their hearts in it, I’m confident they’ll give us some impressive performances,” said Cornwall.
Samantha Phun of Freedom had a surprising second in the 100 meters with a 12.73. Hannah and Emma McLaughlin went 2-3 in the 400 for Heritage. The Pride girls, winners at the Dulles District meet, took fourth with 47 points, three back of Skyline.
On the boys side host Louisa ran away with the meet with a whopping 116, more than doubling runner-up Fluvanna at 54. Heritage boys, like the Pride girls district champs, finished fourth with 51, just 1.5 back of Charlottesville.
Kaise White of Freedom continued his stellar 400 meter season with a first place run of 49.26 and T. J. McPhaul of Heritage was first in the 300 meter hurdles and went 2-3 with teammate Dan Dykema in the 110 meter hurdles.
There were some great distance races on the boys side with PF’s Hagen nipped by Western Albemarle’s Tyler Stutzman in the 800 meters, 1:53.41 to 1:53.54. PF’s Hardin was edged by WA’s James Howard-Smith in the 1600 meters, finishing at 4:21.68 to 4:20.79.
Hardin also took second in the 3200 meters, runner-up to WA’s Kyle Satterwhite.
The Panther boys won the 4×800 with Hagen joining Sean Campos, Andrew Mott and Alvaro Morales.
Briar Woods’ Omar Omokodian captured the discus with a season-best throw of 162-08.

Park View Softball, PF Boys Soccer Knock off Top-Seeded Broad Run

Check back for photos and videos from these four semifinal games

Ashburn (May 20, 2009) – Any thoughts of a Broad Run High
School clean sweep Tuesday night in their four AA Dulles District semifinal
contests were in serious doubt early as Park View shocked the top-seeded
Spartans with three runs in the first inning, and at about the same time,
Loudoun County scored a late goal to take the top-seeded Spartan girls soccer
team into overtime.

While junior Rachel Tharp’s goal in the first minute of
overtime handed Broad Run a 2-1 win over the Raiders on the stadium field, the
Spartan softball team could not get a run across the plate against Patriot
sophomore pitcher Robin Heironimus and Park View held on for the 3-0 milestone win.

The Patriots – breaking Broad Run’s 67-game winning streak
against district opponents since the start of the 2006 season – will now face
Briar Woods Thursday at 7 p.m. at Heritage High School in the finals with the winner
advancing to the Region II tournament along with regular-season champion Broad
Run. The Falcons advanced with a 6-1 win over Dominion Tuesday.

The softball game Thursday at Heritage won’t be the only
contest with a regional bid on the line as the top-seed Broad Run boys soccer
team was halted by Potomac Falls, 1-0, Tuesday. The Panther will face Park View
– a winner in penalty kicks at Loudoun County Tuesday – in Thursday’s 8 p.m.
final with the winner clinching a bid. Broad Run still advances to regionals as
regular-season champion.

Broad Run baseball made it four Spartan teams headed for
Region II next week with junior Shane Vlasic pitching a 2-hitter with a
career-high 12 strikeouts in a 3-0 semifinal win over Loudoun County. The
Spartans will meet regular-season champion Potomac Falls on Thursday at
Heritage at 7 p.m. in the finals. The Panthers edged Dominion, 1-0, Tuesday in
eight innings. Both Potomac Falls and Broad Run will advance to regionals.

The Spartan overtime victory in girls soccer allowed No. 2
seed Heritage to clinch a regional bid Tuesday with the Pride’s 3-1 win over
Potomac Falls. Heritage will host Broad Run in the district finals Thursday at
6 p.m.

Softball: Park View
3, Broad Run 0

Park View coach Ed Abner likened his teams win over Broad Run
Tuesday to the U.S. Hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice” victory over the Russians.

Not that it was that big of an upset for the No. 4 seed
Patriots which took the Spartans into the seventh inning last week in a
scoreless duel before falling 1-0, but also for the fact that as big as the win
is, the Patriots still have to play a game to advance, much as the Americans
still had a game to play to win the gold medal after beating the Soviet Union
in 1980.

Patriot coach Ed Abner thought the 1-0 loss a week ago was a
big emotional boost going into this game.

“They kind of realized they could play with these guys,”
said Abner who hadn’t beaten Broad Run in his four years as the Patriots coach.

Abner was perfectly happy to let his girls go celebrate and
enjoy the victory before focusing on Thursday’s championship game.

“They can do almost anything they want to do tonight,” said
Abner with a laugh.

The Patriots were all hugs and smiles after the final out.

“The rivalry between Park View and Broad Run has always been
so strong. To finally get this win is just awesome,” said PV junior Rebecca
Patton.

Park View did all the damage it needed in the top of the first
inning with three unearned runs crossing the plate with two outs.

The Patriots opened the semifinal with freshmen Samantha
Thomas reaching on an error. It appeared that Spartan pitcher Judy Betz might
get out of the inning – despite hitting Robin asicHeironimus with a pitch as
she erased Thomas on a fielder’ s choice before the hit batter and then got a
comebacker for the second out.

Junior Samantha Gleason, however, reached on an infield
error to score a run and then juniors Patton and Brittany Griffin followed with
back-to-back singles to right field to make it 3-0.

The Patriots almost scored another run in the second inning
but Thomas was cut down on the basepaths trying to score on a single by
Heironimus.

Betz settled down and finished the game strong, retiring the
final 13 hitters she faced with the ball not leaving the infield.

With normal leadoff hitter and shortstop Megan Waterman out
with an injury, the Spartans juggled their line-up, moving second base Reagan
Doiron to short and Dulles District Player of the Year, catcher Haley Johnson
hit leadoff.

Broad Run had runners in four of the seven innings but the
Spartans were just  1-for-6 with runners
on base and Heironimus did a nice job of retiring the leadoff hitter she faced
in all seven innings. She finished the complete game win allowing four hits,
one walk and one hit batter. She had three strikeouts.

The Spartans came closest to scoring in the third inning
when sophomore Maggie Betz doubled and tried to score on a single but was
thrown out by Patriot second base Kristin Oravetz at the plate.

“We worked hard tonight and it finally paid off,” said
Oravetz one of two seniors on the PV roster.

Park View improves to 13-9 overall while Broad Run slipped
to 17-3.

Baseball: Broad Run
3, Loudoun County 0

Spartan junior Shane Vlasic pitched a 2-hitter with a career
12 strikeouts and Patrick Murphy hit a 2-run home run to lead No. 3 seed Broad
Run past upset-minded Loudoun County in the Dulles District semifinals.

Murphy’s shot in the third inning scored Vlasic (1-for-2)
who led off the inning with a walk against Raider pitcher Tyler Saleck.

“I got a change-up and I stroked it over the fence. It was a
line drive, I didn’t think it was going to go out,” said Murphy of his home
run.

Broad Run came into the postseason with just one home run on
the year but the Spartans now have three in the district tournament including
two dramatic home runs in the quarterfinals to beat Briar Woods in extra
innings.

Saleck worked out  of
trouble in the fourth inning but gave up an RBI to Tyler Small – the hero
Monday with a walk-off grand slam home run – to make it 3-0.

The Raiders loaded the bases in the first inning on two
walks and a hit by Nick Veschi but Vlasic coaxed a ground ball out to end the
inning  and proceeded to retire 18 of the
next 19 hitters he faced for the commanding victory.

“My arm felt good and my curve ball was working,” said
Vlasic.

Broad Run improves to 12-8 on the year, having won 9 of the
last 11, while LC ends the season at 6-14.

Girls Soccer: Broad
Run 2, Loudoun County 1 (Overtime)

Broad Run’s almost blemish on their 17-0-1 season came in a
0-0 tie with Loudoun County and much of Tuesday’s semifinal was looking like
another scoreless draw.

The Spartans, however, were able to get on the scoreboard in
the 55th minute when Rachel Tharp played a great ball across the
goal mouth to a wide open Taylor Starr, who tapped the ball home for a 1-0
lead.

Loudoun County got the equalizer with 6:25 remaining off a
goal by freshman Sarah Olivero after a scramble in front of the Spartan net
from a long throwin.

The game went into overtime at 1-1 but the Spartans struck
quick with Tharp scoring just 55 seconds into the 10-minute extra period.

“I didn’t really expect it. I just kicked it in,” said Tharp
of the game-winner.

Broad Run’s defense, led by all-district keeper Caitlin
Hunter kept the Raiders from scoring in the final nine minutes of overtime to
secure the win.

Loudoun County ends the season 8-7-2.

Boys Soccer: Potomac
Falls 1, Broad Run 0

For the second time in just over a week, Potomac Falls shut
out Broad Run and the win Tuesday earned the hot Panthers a trip to the Dulles
District finals.

PF has now won six straight matches to improve to 12-5-1 on
the season. Broad Run slips to 12-6-0.

The Panthers score by David Becerra came in the first half
off an Asa Fox throwin that Conor  Shanosky
was able to flick. It was Becerra’s first goal of the season.

“Conor got the flick and I was at the back post,” said
Becerra.

Potomac Falls junior keeper Ryan Howard celebrated his 17th
birthday Tuesday and he was the “Man of the Match” for PF, keeping the Spartans
off the scoreboard. Howard especially came up big in the dying minutes of the
contest as PF defended and BR had multiple long throwins by Paul Ellington into
the six.

“I knew I needed to step up and take care of my box and that
is what I did tonight,” said Howard who is a club soccer teammate of Ellington’s
so he was very familiar with the Spartans dangerous long throwins.

PF coach Dave Gryder said his team is a young team that is
starting to believe in themselves.

“We held on, they had a lot of good chances … defensively we
held on and pulled a 1-0 victory,” said Gryder.
“My goalie came up with a lot of good saves. I think he played out of
him mind a lot of times.”

“Emily Nykorchuk is a sophomore who took over the catcher
position this year.  Park View has been blessed to have senior catchers
for the past three years but this year, there was a change.  Emily stepped
in right from the start and never looked back.  Her defensive abilities
and handling of the pitchers has been mature beyond her experience and the team
has united around her.  Through the first sixteen games, Emily has played
errorless ball and missed only one game, due to a broken nose.  She has
done everything asked of her and then some and is one of the hardest workers on
the team.  Her efforts and attitude have allowed the coaching staff to
focus on other areas of improvement because she IS the Park View catcher.
Her grades are outstanding and she is active in the music community at Park
View.  She was also recently named to the Language Honor Society.  Park
View would like to recognize Emily Nykorchuk as an unsung athlete who is
deserving of recognition and this honor.”
