Sterling (Jan. 12, 2007) – The Broad Run High School boys basketball
team held off Park View’s furious second-half rally Monday night to
defeat the Patriots 51-49 in overtime.

It was Patriots third consecutive loss – and second straight AA
Dulles District defeat — after opening the season 11-0. Park View
(6-2, 12-3) recovered to defeat Briar Woods on Wednesday. The Patriots
face an up-and-coming Freedom team Saturday afternoon in South Riding
at 2:30 p.m.

Broad Run extended their winning streak to five straight games by
following up Monday’s dramatic win with a 46-43 win over Dominion
Wednesday. The Spartans are now 6-2 in district and 11-4 overall. Broad
Run travels to Potomac Falls for a 1:30 p.m. showdown Saturday.

The Spartans burst out of the gate Monday night with seven points in
the first minute of play, and stretched their lead to 22-14 by the end
of the first quarter.

Broad Run had the Patriot man-to-man defense figured out early,
showing patience, passing well, and getting open shots for their two
leading scorers, Mark McGlone (16 points, 12 in the first half) and
Adrian Mines (18 points).

On the other side of the ball their stifling defense held the
Patriots to just 6 points in the second quarter, and 20 in the half.

“Our M.O. is to come out strong and effective early in the game,” said Broad Run coach Larry Boomer.

The second quarter saw the action get sloppy as the Patriots stepped
up their defensive intensity and put more pressure on the ball. Park
View held Broad Run to 10 points in the quarter, but couldn’t
capitalize on offense. The Patriots had a clear size advantage, with a
front court that looks more like an offensive line, but failed to take
advantage of it, instead opting for quick shots from their guards, and
never settling into a rhythm.

At the half Broad Run led 32-20.

The second half saw a role reversal, with Broad Run looking hesitant
and confused on offense, and the Patriots finally establishing their
offense inside.

The halftime adjustments made by Park View coach Jeff Schneider paid
off, as the Patriots got the ball to their big men on every possession
of the third quarter and scored 14 points, all in the paint.  Using
their size and strength, the Patriot big men, led by Thomas Mulabah
(nine points) and James Nolen (seven points) were more physical and
dominated the offensive and defensive boards.

Park View[‘s defense continued its assault, forcing seven Spartan
turnovers in the quarter and holding Broad Run to a paltry seven
points. At the end of a frenetic third quarter the Patriots had clawed
to within five, 39-34.

Park View switched to a 1-3-1 zone in the fourth, which clearly
confused the Spartans, and with seven minutes to go in regulation the
score was tied at 39 after a  3-pointer by Patriot CJ Leizear.

An ally-oop dunk by McGlone on the following possession put Broad
Run back in front 41-39. Patriot Chris Harvin (nine points), who
suffered a cut early in the game and had to be tended to by trainers
throughout the evening, hit two free throws to give Park View the lead,
44-43 with 3:20 left.

With the game tied at 46 and 1:15 left in regulation, Park View went
into a stall offense.  After a timeout with 10 seconds to go, Amechi
Anyaugo (nine points) drove left and threw up an off-balance shot that
missed the mark and the game went into overtime.

Broad Run would need only five free throws in overtime to seal the victory.

After a frenzied opening stint in OT, Park View found itself up one
with 1:45 remaining, and in control of the ball.  Schneider sent the
Pats into stall mode again, but Jamil Snyder stole the ball with 1:02
remaining, was fouled, and made both free throws to put the Spartans up
one, 48-47.

A Park View turnover led to two free throws for Travis Clarke (11
points), who buried both to put the Spartans up for good. Clarke would
make one more for insurance, as Broad Run escaped 51-49.

“For some reason we’ve been stumbling across the finish line,” said
Boomer.  “In the second half we lost our focus, partly because we’re
playing against a good team, and because we’re on the road.”

Park View finished the night shooting just 10 of 23 from the foul line.
