2008 VHSL STATE SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

WHAT: 2008 VHSL Group AAA and A/AA State Swimming & Diving Championships

WHEN: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 7-9, 2008

WHERE: AAA – Patriot Center Aquatics and Fitness Center, George Mason University, Fairfax campus; A/AA – Freedom Aquatics and Fitness Center, George Mason University, Manassas campus
AAA BOYS AND GIRLS

SCHEDULE: Friday, February 8: Boys and Girls swimming/diving preliminaries (4:00 p.m.); Saturday, February 9: Girls Diving (9:00 a.m.) and Boys Diving (12:00 p.m.); Boys and Girls swimming finals (4:00 p.m.).

ADMISSION: $7.00 per person/per session.

ELIGIBILITY: Participation is open to VHSL AAA swimmers/divers who meet all VHSL eligibility criteria for participating in sports, and the following competition standards. Swimmers must achieve a VHSL qualifying time in one or more individual or relay events. A qualifying time may be obtained during any 2007-08 regular season high school meet, a VHSL sanctioned invitation, or in the school’s district or regional championship meet. A qualifying time must be achieved in a high school competition. A swimmer can also qualify by finishing with a top eight finish in the regional championships and a top four finish in relay events in the regional championships.
Divers must obtain a state qualifying diving score during a VHSL sanctioned meet where 11 dives are required, a VHSL sanctioned invitational (11 dives required), district or regional championship. Score must have been obtained during the current 2007-08 season. All top eight regional qualifiers are eligible to advance to the state meet. Qualifying divers must meet requirements for championship meets as specified in the NFHS Rulebook.

MEET FORMAT: Trials (prelims) and finals will be held for all events. The top 16 swimmers in each event will advance to the consolation/finals. Friday’s top eight swimmers will compete on Saturday for the championship finals, positions 1 through 8. Consolation finals on Saturday will consist of finishers 9 through 16 from Friday’s prelims.

2007 IN REVIEW: VHSL AAA Boys and Girls State Swimming & Diving Championship at Virginia Beach Community Recreation Center.

AAA BOYS: James Robinson won its fifth straight VHSL boys championship beating out second place Oakton by 116 points (274-158). The Rams had six individual winners, plus took all three relays in VHSL record times (200 medley 1:48.65; 200 freestyle relay 1:37.08 and 400 freestyle relay 3:32.98).
Other record breakers were Andy Brake of Lake Braddock in the 200 IM (2:05.53), Sean Fletcher of James Madison in the 100 butterfly (56.13), Zach Holmes of Robinson in the 100 freestyle (51.76) and Bryan Uncur of Hickory in the 500 freestyle (5:05.94). Holmes in the 40 freestyle (23.84) and Derik Bui in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.03) were the Rams’ other winners.

Woodson (481.05); 100 Butterfly: Sean Fletcher, James Madison (56.13); 100 Freestyle: Zach Holmes, James Robinson (51.76);

500 Freestyle: Bryan Uncur, Hickory (5:05.94); 200 Freestyle Relay: James Robinson (1:37.08), 100 Backstroke: Wade Gong, Thomas Jefferson (50.00); 100 Breaststroke: Derek Bui, James Robinson (1:04.03); 400 Freestyle Relay: James Robinson (3:32.98).

AAA GIRLS: Yorktown took home its second consecutive VHSL state championship. The Patriots took two of the three relays, finishing 2:01.35 in the 200 medley and setting a record in the 200 freestyle with 1:40.04. Adding to the list of individual titles was Maren Taylor in diving (420.93).
A total of seven records were broken on meet day. Two-time winner of the 200 freestyle, Rebecca Jones of First Colonial set the new bar at 2:03.12. Another two-time winner, Amanda Kendall of James Robinson, established 26.47 as the mark t beat in the 40 freestyle as well as 57.17 for the 500 free. Meredith Cavalier of Brooke Pointe and Ellyn Baumgardner of Fairfax established new marks in the 100 backstroke (1:03.42) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.31).

2007 IN REVIEW: VHSL AA/A Boys and Girls State Swimming & Diving Championship at the University of Virginia Aquatic and Fitness Center.

AA/A BOYS: Jamestown captured its second straight VHSL state crown. The Eagles finished the meet with 329.5 points, 113.5 ahead of runner-up Lafayette. The Eagles took the top spots in the 400 freestyle relay (3:15.55) and Mike Newcomb successfully defended his title in the 1 meter diving.
Other notable performances of the tournament included Brentsville sophomore Zandy Morres who won both of this events at his first state meet, with 4:44.63 in the 500 freestyle and 59.42 in the 100 breaststroke.
Broken records of the day went to Matt Baumler of Lafayette in the 100 backstroke (51.75) and to Stephen Hawkins of Jefferson Forest in the 100 freestyle (45.52).

Freestyle: Alexander Morres, Brentsville (4:44.63); 200 Freestyle Relay: Lafayette (1:28.40); 100 Backstroke: Matt Baumler, Lafayette (51.75); 100 Breastroke: Alexander Morres, Brentsville (59.42); 400 Freestyle Relay: Jamestown (3:15.55).

AA/A GIRLS: Lafayette won its fourth straight VHSL state title with 344 points defeating runner-up Grafton by 164 points.
The Rams finished the day with six individual titles. Among them were the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Hannah Davis shined in the 40 freestyle (23.92) while Paige Boyer took the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.72.
Two of the three records broken on competition day were owned by Lafayette. Davis, who repeated her win in the 100 freestyle, set the new bar at 51:49. The 200 freestyle relay team did the same at 1:39.46.
Senior Lauren Ritter of Dominion set the new mark in the 500 freestyle with a 4:55.26 finish, winning the state title all four years of her high school career. She also took the number one spot in the 200 freestyle.
