Volleyball Round-up: Vikes Open with Win over Robinson

(Aug. 28, 2008) – The Loudoun Valley High School volleyball team opened its season this week with a win over Robinson in four games. The Vikes host Stone Bridge in the Bulldogs season-opener tonight in Purcellville at 7:30 p.m.

In other action, Freedom dropped matches to Gar-Field and Stonewall Jackson and Park View fell to Potomac High School.

Stonewall Jackson 3, Freedom 0 


Reports Coach Tsuda: Tonight the Freedom Eagles varsity volleyball team lost 3-0 against the Stonewall-Jackson Raiders of Manassas. The scores were 13-25, 11-25, and 19-25.  Short point rallies were sparked by solid serving performances by Katie Maxwell, Sarah Chapman, and Kathryn Ivey.  The young team is definitely improving its defense as demonstrated by the number of digs and saves against the strong Raiders.
 
The Jr. Varsity Team lost 0-2.  Scores were 24-26 and 19-25.  The team’s energetic defense produced numerous saves and blocks throughout both games.

The Freshmen Team lost 0-2.  Scores were 17-25 and 16-25.

Loudoun Valley 3, Robinson 1

Reports Coach Johnson: Loudoun Valley opened up the 2008 season Tuesday (8/26) hosting the Rams of Robinson High School, earning a tough 3 games to1 victory.

Leading the Vikings offense were Ally Blaine who recorded 20 assists and added 13 service points including 3 aces and Nicole Benett who tallied 9 assists and added 11 service points including 3 service aces. Morgan Clark lead all hitters with16 kills (.419) and added 8 service points including 2 aces. Middle hitter Lindsay Phipps added 8 killls and 7 service points.

Defensively, Lindsay Phipps totaled 5 blocking combos and 12 digs while Morgan Clark totaled 14 digs. However Kristen Martin anchored the defense talleying 22 digs.

Taylor Maddox- 2 kills, 4 digs
Danielle Caputo- 2 kills, 11 digs
Hayley Grabner- 3 kills, 2 digs
Meredith Bland- 4 kills, 1 dig

Next match- Thursday, 8/28 Stonebridge at Loudoun Valley.


Gar-Field 3, Freedom 1

Coach Tsuda reports: Freedom lost its first match 1-3 against the Gar-Field Indians.

The scores were 11-25, 18-25, 25-14, 22-25.  The team retained their confidence through several tough rallies in the third and fourth games.  Timely blocks by Jenna Flanigin and Kaitlyn LaMantia started each rally.  Consistent serving by all the players maintained the momentum. This young team demonstrated its mettle during the tough times.
 
The Freedom Jr. Varsity VB Team won its first match 2-1. After splitting the first two games, the third game was the proverbial nail-biter to the end.
