Volleyball: Top 5 Poll, Tuesday Round-up & Thursday Preview

LoudounPrepSports.com Volleyball Top 5 Poll
Sept. 11, 2008

1. Loudoun County (4-0)
The Skinny: Raiders have won 31 straight and have enough talent to make a run at a second straight AA state title. Currently ranked No. 2 in DC Metro area by a large newspaer (we kid, it’s the WashPost, like you didn’t know!). If Raiders wanted, they could go to a 3-setter line-up with the addition of Robin Marsala to the talented duo of Katie Martin and Kerry Sarver. LPS Monkey says: “Raiders are certainly “setting” pretty.”

2. Loudoun Valley (4-1)
The Skinny: Vikes only loss on the season was a Cedar Run defeat at Fauquier. Is it just us or does Morgan Clark look like she plays at about 6-foot-5 at the net. Most of Valley’s Cedar Run District season will be spent on the bus in traffic trying to get from Gainesville to Manassas!

3. Heritage (3-0)
The Skinny: Pride have defeated Broad Run twice already and their only defeat came to AAA Herndon. Pride certainly went under our radar in the preseason preview but anybody overlooking Heritage now will take a direct hit. Freshman setter Stephanie Yokoyama is certainly on her way to setting all sorts of school assists records.

4. Broad Run (2-1)
The Skinny: Spartans extended Heritage to five sets Tuesday. Key match tonight against Raiders. BR playing a well-crafted game under new coach Ellen Roberts. Keep an eye out for Mallory Brickerd … nine blocks on Tuesday. Talk about your “Brickerd Walls”.

5. Stone Bridge (1-3)
The Skinny: The Bulldogs seem to win just about every first set. SB has taken at least a game in loses to strong AAA teams Valley, Robinson and Herndon. We expect them to be in the Liberty District title hunt once again come Oct. All-Region setter Lily Vera returning to 100 percent will certainly help the ‘Dawgs.

On the bubble: Potomac Falls (3-2)

*records do not include tournament play, some of which are two set affairs.

———————————————
Thursday Sept. 11 Preview (all matches start apx. 20 minutes after finish of 6 p.m. JV match)

AA Dulles District
Briar Woods @ Heritage
The Skinny: After slow start, Falcons are playing much better and now they face a red-hot Pride team.

Freedom @ Potomac Falls
The Skinny: Panthers are money playing in the Panther Pit.

Loudoun County @ Broad Run
The Skinny: Last year’s big rivalry returns though many of the biggest names (Petkovich! M. Hanna!, L. Sears!, Bauernfeind!) have moved onto college volleyball. BR will try and prevent County from running its winning streak to “32-Skidoo”

Park View @ Dominion
The Skinny: Titans took a game from LC on Tuesday and we take that as a sign that Cam Meyer has his team playing togetgher.

——————————————
Volleyball Terminology:
LPS is using the term “sets” to refer to the best of 5 series teams play to determine a winner. Olympic volleyball uses “sets” instead of “games” to refer the series and NCAA in 2008 has also moved officially from “game” to “set”. To make matters more confusing, NCAA will now refer to “matches” as “games”. Got that! In high schol and college volleyball. The first four sets are played to 25 points (win by two) and the fifth set, if needed, is played to 15 (again, win by two). All scoring is rally scoring (not sideout scoring like when LPS Editor Dan Sousa had more hair and less stomach) which means a team can score both while serving and receiving.
