High Noon: Raiders with Dramatic OT Win at Park View

Sterling (Apr. 26. 2009) – With an unusual 10:45 a.m. starting time Saturday morning it was indeed “High Noon” as Loudoun County and Park View, the two teams tied atop the AA Dulles District boys soccer standings, went into overtime with the score knotted 1-1 in a contest played before a sparse crowd in a sweltering heat.
While the rest of the disrict, especially Broad Run sitting just one point back of the Raiders and Patriots, would have settled for a tie, it was the Raiders with the dramatic win for their sixth straight victory as  junior Sergio Herrarte sent in a free kick with 2:10 left to play in overtime that skimmed through trafic in the Patriots 18 and found the side of the net.
Park View fell to 5-3-1 on the season and LC improved to 6-2-1 after opening the year 0-2-1 in district play.
Both teams were without key players as Patriot forward K.C. Onyeador and Raider keeper Calle Brown were away with their club team. Nick Voreas subbed in for Brown and had several big time saves for LC.
Park View went up 1-0 on a nice Kevin Flamenco free kick with 6:13 left in the first half. The Raiders answered with less than two minutes to play before the half when Connor Winemiller worked hard to win a ball in the left corner and then sent a cross to the near post, that was headed home by sophomore Michael Alvarado.
Both teams had opportunities in the second half but could not finish.
