College Choice Chart: Class of 2009 and Class of 2010

Welcome to our college signing/college choice page! If you have any corrections or additions to our list please drop us a note. Also, contact Dan Sousa (dsousa@digitalsports.com) if you want us to cover your college signing.

Aug. 9 update: We add another to our chart from the highly-talented Class of 2009 as Jessica Mullen of Loudoun Valley is going to play basketball at Bridgewater this year. Congrats Jessica!

Aug. 5 update: I’m bacckkkkkk! We have another update with Stone Bridge baseball player Ryan Cummings headed to play baseball at Garrett College, a junior college in Garrett County, Md. … home of Deep Creek Lake, one of the LPS Monkey’s favorite vacation spots. Good luck to Ryan!

Aug. 4, update: Surely we tan the put the Class of 2009 signing chart to bed but we keep getting additions and are catching up from some summer news. Such as:

Two former Loudoun Valley High School baseball standouts, Daniel Burke and T.J. Daeschner, will play collegiately for Greensboro College.
Burke, a right-handed pitcher, had three saves and 22 strikeouts in 21 innings for the Vikings in 2009. His ERA was 1.38.
Daeschner was an outfielder and right-handed pitcher at Valley. He hit .395 as a senior with four home runs.
Located in Greensboro, N.C., Greensboro College plays in the NCAA’s Division III’s USA-South Conference. The Pride had an 18-23 record last season.
Also, Lauren Wong, an outstanding volleyball player at Dominion, has signed with the University of Rhode Island (Div I – Atlantic 10) where she intends to pursue her studies in the field of Biology.  Lauren has played 3 years on the Dominion Varsity Team (captain Junior and Senior seasons) and is first the Dominion Volleyball athlete recruited to play Division I.  In July, her club team (Virginia Elite) will be competing for the USA Volleyball championship in her age division for the 4th consecutive year.
And more: Warner Workman, who was homeschooled and played at Leesburg Christian, will play baseball for Cedarville University. And Chelsea Robinson, a track standout at Stone Bridge, is headed to Temple on a partial scholarship. And Amy Rollins, also of Stone Bridge, is going to play lax at Shenandoah. Whew! Did we miss others? Email us …
The 2010 chart will take center stage on our next posting but see below for early signees with Chase Williams of Loudoun County and T.J. Peeler of Broad Run making bit-time news with Williams headed to Virginia Tech and Peeler to Pitt … but first we get the pleasure of watching them one more prep football season.

June 5 update: The list grows as we add eight Park View athletes that weren’t our list. See this story for all the PV athletes honored this week. Also, we added Lauren Wong of Dominion who will play D1 volleyball at Rhode Island and Heritage football player Gil Johnson Sr. will walk on at Frostburg State.

May 19 update: Broad Run held a big ceremony Tuesday morning to honor nine athletes headed to college. And while we had five of those seniors on our charts already — Chris Jessop (baseball/Flagler), Shawn Lewis (football/Salisburg), Kenny McAdow (football/Northeastern), Tim Miscovich (football/Bryant), and Kevin Sandersen (football/Salisburg) — we add four more to our charts including softball player Reagan Doiron, who will play at George Mason and three competitive cheerleaders that helped the Spartans to states the past three years — Lianne Arundel (Hawaii Pacific), Tori Marshall (Virgnia Tech) and Mandy Moore (Virginia Tech). Not to feel left out but neighboring school Stone Bridge and Briar Woods — the LPS Monkey likes to call BR, BW and SB the Bermuda Triangle of College Signings with a total of 56 seniors between the three schools, more than half of the 108 on our charts — each added an athlete. Chris Kamara of SB soccer will play at Louisburg Junior College in North Carolina and Krysta Gardner  reports that she is going to play NCAA Division I volleyball at Bethune-Cookman in Florida. Congrats to all these great kids!

May 7 update: It may be raining outside but inside its pouring with college choice news for area athletes as we add more names to our growing chart — breaking the century mark with 102 athletes total. Brenton Peters of Heritage is headed Ivy League as he will play NCAA D1 baseball at Cornell University. Moving west in Leesburg, we come to David Kent who will play D3 football for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Into Ashburn we have a bit of history as Lily Vera becomes Stone Bridge’s first ever D1 volleyball recruit as she will play at UNC-Charlotte. And over to Broad Run, one of the Spartans top athletes, Kenny McAdow, who led the football team to a AA state title and is goalie on the district champion lax team, will be a preferred walkon for football at D1 Northeastern next year. Whew! See all the name below! **Stone Bridge becomes the first school to reach 20 athletes with Broad Run and Potomac Falls right behind with 19!

Join our LoudounPrepSports.com Fan Page on Facebook … it’s easy, it’s painless!

May 6 update: We add three athletes to our chart to reach 98 total including Stone Bridge softball players Ashely Gardner and Cassie Phillips as well as Loudoun Valley High School football player Collin Owens, headed to Bridgewater to play. We also have another junior with a verbal as Potomac Falls soccer player Conner Shanosky will play at Virginiat Tech starting in 2010-11. And how about Potomac Falls and Stone Bridge both with 19 athletes headed to college from the ’09 class and Broad Run right behind with 18! I’m sure more signings will push both of these schools at least to the 20 mark.

May 1 Update: We are approaching the 100 mark for athletes on our college bound chart with the addition of Loudoun Valley High School softball player Hailey Tretick, who will play NCAA Division II ball next year at Lock Haven. Currently,  Lock Haven is ranked #1 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, and ranked 3rd in the Nation and the team is a perennial national contender. Way to go Hailey! Speaking of Valley: How strong is their Class of 2010? We just added two more Viking juniors to our 2010 list — soccer players Ashley Manning (Virginia Tech) and Amber Cook (ODU) — and that makes four LV athletes total on the liset of eight. Do you know a senior or junior not on our chart? Heck — email us at dsousa@digitalsports.com or twitter the LPSMonkey at LPSMonkey on Twitter!

April 28 Update: We have some more college news and this time it comes from Loudoun Valley as two Viking football players will play in college, but for Viking 6-foot-7 lineman Ron Pelkey it will be rugby at Penn State. The Nittany Lions have one of the top collegiate rugby programs in the country and Pelkey is considered one of the top young rugby players in the nation, recently attending the USA U-18 training camp in California. Pelkey is captain of the Western Loudoun Rugby Wolverines, considered the top team in the state in their age group. Congrats Ron!

One of Pelkey’s teammates, lineman Sam Juzbasich, will suit up for NCAA Division II Slippery Rock next season. Slipper Rock’s nickname, by the way, is The Rock … how cool is that!

And Ken Wright, Loudoun County Athletic Director and former state champion pole vaulter in his youth (bet you didn’t know that!), reports that Raider junior Julianne Hanna, who has helped the LC volleyball team to back-to-back state titles, will play starting in 2010 for the University of New Mexico. The Division I Lobos went 22-7 last fall in the Mountain West Conference.

April 27 update: We add a flight of Falcon football players to the chart and also Jennifer Skogerboe of Stone Bridge’s class of 2010 will play soccer at Connecticut. Are there more juniors out there with verbal commitments? Give us a shout and we will give you a shout out!

April 22 update: Another day and more signing news! Josh Thiel held his signing cremony at Heritage High School today. He will kick at Saint Frances next year. Click here for the details plus photos and video from the signing. And Aaron Kakol reports that he has accepted a preferred walk-on status with the James Madison football team for next season. The Briar Woods lineman becomes one of six local athletes headed to Harrisonburg — most of any college so far with William & Mary one behind with five. Check below for our full signing chart and stats!

April 21 update: Wow x 19! Potomac Falls held a mass signing for 19 athletes playing college next year. Click here for the scoop! Check below for a big chart update including our school, sport and college stats! Panthers lead all schools in Loudoun in signings now!

April 10 update: The football players are making their minds up with some Division II and Division III decisions this past week including Tim McLister of Loudoun County (McDaniel), Greg Woodlief of Potomac Falls (Guilford), and Brandon Absher and Kenny Smith both of Park View (and both headed to Glenville State).

Loudoun County strong safety McLister committed to play football for the McDaniel College Green Terror. Located in Westminster MD, McDaniel was looking to upgrade it’s defensive backfield to help them get back to the top of the NCAA D3 Centennial Conference where they have been champions several times in the past decade.

McLister was a 3-year varsity starter for the Loudoun County Raiders. In his senior year playing strong safety, WR, and returning punts/kickoffs, McLister was a key factor for the Raiders football program gaining their first playoff berth in over 10 seasons. Prior to breaking his ankle in the fifth game of the season vs. Potomac Falls, McLister was one of the Dulles Districts top defensive backs having three interceptions, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles. McLister came back in their final “must win” game vs. Heritage with another five tackles to help the Raiders seal the playoff berth.

Loudoun County’s head coach Todd Hill awarded McLister the first “Raider Strong” award at the conclusion of the season and said “McDaniel is getting a great football player. Timmy is a hard-nosed player whom we are very proud of. He led by example on and off the field. Dedication and commitment are words that best describe him. Timmy always gave maximum effort and was a great leader for our program. Our coaching staff is extremely proud of Timmy’s accomplishments and we know he will be successful at McDaniel College.”
For more on the Woodlief click here for the official release from Guilford … though we think they might have added Michael Baker’s rushing TDs along with Woodlief’s to get to that number of 22. Still the point is that Woodlief is a run/pass threat.
And for more on the Park View duo signing — Andy Hill swears a release was sent out but it didn’t hit our inbox — so let’s go to the WashPost and some BREAKING NEWS! (we tease because we love the Posties) … click here for more on Absher and Smith.
And while we are onto the Loudoun Extra how about some extra credit from Paul “Paper Chase” Tenorio and yet another update in the mounting offers for talented LC linebacker/tight end Chase Williams. He is up to six offers! And yes … file this baby under BREAKING NEWS as well.
Good luck to all four players!

April 3 Update: Wow … only a day since our last update and we have five new athletes to add to our growing list which is now up to 69 athletes from the 2009 class and four from 2010!

Loudoun County athletic director Ken Wright announced today that a pair of Raider softball players, shortstop Holly Norris  and third base Taylor Grimmell, will play D3 softball next year.

Norris has verbally committed to play softball next year for D-3 Muskingum College in New Concord, OH.  Muskingum is led by NFCA Hall of Fame coach Donna Newberry who holds the record for most wins in D-3 history and has led the team to 13 consecutive NCAA playoff appearances.  Norris a 4-year starter was 1st team all district and 2nd team all region at shortstop last season helping lead the Raiders to a state quarterfinal appearance.

Grimmell has verbally committed to play softball next year for D-3 Hood College in Frederick, MD which is coached by Kate Barrick. Grimmell is a captain and 2-year starter helped lead the Raiders to a state quarterfinal appearance last season.

And while we are at Loudoun County, congrats to Raider junior keeper Calle Brown who is reported as an early verbal to play at the University of Virginia starting in 2010-11.

Now on to football where we have some news with Jamie Caldwell of Briar Woods and Trevor Cottom of Potomac Falls playing in college next year.

Caldwell (6-3, 285) — a 4-year starter at left offensive tackle and defensive tackle for the Falcons, helping the team go a combined 30-12 with two playoff appearances — has been offered preferred walk-on status at Division I Towson of the Colonial Athletic Conference. He was also named all-district in 2007 and 2008 and all-region by Gameday Magazine in 2008.

Towson University offensive line coach John Donatelli envisions Caldwell moving inside to play center for the Tigers. Caldwell – like all of the other members of the 2009 signing class for Towson University – will be red shirted this fall.
Finally, congrats to Cottom, second team all-district at center in 2008, who will be playing D3 football in the fall at Shenandoah.

April 2 Update: Congratulations to three more area athletes who will participate in college athletics next year: Dominion golfer Keri Muse, Potomac Falls swimmer Caylyn Tate and Loudoun Valley basketball player Drew MacMahon.

MacMahon, the Vikes senior point guard, has committed to play basketball next year at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. Washington College competes in the Centenial Conference which includes some of the best D3 programs in the country, such as Gettysburg, Franklin and Marshall, Ursinus, and Dickinson. MacMahon was All-Cedar Run District this year and Valley’s MVP. He was the top assist man in the AAA Northwest Region. In the end MacMahon had a number of opportunities, but liked the quality of education and the chance to contribute as a freshman as deciding choices.
Muse signed Monday to play golf for NCAA Division I Wagner College located on Saten Island in New York City.  She received an academic and athletic scholarship, and carries a 4.2 GPA.
Tate achieved an “All American” time in her 500 free at the AA/A state meet last month.  Her time earned her second place at states, and nearly broke the state record set last year. Tate has signed to swim at William and Mary next year. The girls team for Potomac Falls won the regular season district title as well as the Dulles District tournament title. Tate set the following school records this past season:
200 IM  2:12.21
100 ****** 1:12.13
500 Free 4:55.90
200 Free Relay 1:43.33  (along with Carla Harvey, Kirby Shook and Bridget Werner)
She also is a member of the 2008 Relay team that set the 200 Medley record of 1:55.22
Excellent! We love good news … send us your college signing news at dsousa@digitalsports.com.

March 23 update: We add three more athletes to the chart in this latest installment with a “royal reporting” as Michael Prince of Stone Bridge has accepted preferred walk-on status at NCAA Division I James Madison where he will team with current teammate RB Dainel Allen. And here is Music to our ears, Chris Music of Loudoun Valley has accpeted an offer to play at NCAA Division I Montana State. Music says he will get a look at slot when he graduates and heads to Big Sky country. And the third new athlete to land on our radar is David Conrow of Freedom who will play basketball at Divisiion III Randolph College. Conrow is just the latest Loudoun athlete headed to Lynchburg where Radolph is located, seems the school has a good pipeline into LoCo. And a look back at the March 19 report, we have learned that Tim Miscovich of Broad Run will be competing at quarterback at Bryant. Miscovich was behind Chris Jessop on the depth chart with the state-title winning Spartans but no doubt would have been the No. 1 guy at most high schools. Good luck to all our athletes moving on!
March 19 update: We add six athletes to the chart who will be playing in college next year and part of the story here is the expanding opportunities for those who want to keep playing. Tim Miscovich, punter on the state title football Broad Run football team, will play at Bryant in Rhode Island which just moved to NCAA Division I in the fall. Austin Underwood of Briar Woods will play NCAA Division I lacrosse at Jacksonville University which just added men’s and women’s lacrosse this year. Another Falcon lacrosse player, Ryan Blackwell, will play NCAA Division III lacrosse at Randolph College in Lyncburg. The college just recently went co-ed.

Others headed for the college atheletic fields include Heritage’s Tyler Blevins who will play lacrosse at NCAA Division III Greensboro College and a pair of Spartan football players from that undefeated team that won the AA state title in December, Shawn Lewis and Kevin Sandersen, will play at NCAA Division III Salisbury University in Maryland.

Good luck to all six boys next year in college!
March 13 update: Joe Baires of Potomac Falls announced Friday that he will play NCAA Division 3 soccer next year at Mary Washington. Congratulations to Joe!
