Valley staked its firm claim on first by holding Heritage to nine points in the first half. When Valley held Stonewall to four points in the first half, the Cedar Run District sent out a CSI team to investigate the width of the baskets. (CSI Nokesville to be exact). This week it’s all Willie Nelson for Valley as they are “On the Road Again” … and again … and again. Hey, the life they love is makin’ baskets with their friends … sorry Willie.

2. Heritage (8-7)

Last week: Lost to Valley, 39-51; Defeated Potomac Falls, 66-53.

Most people would put Park View ahead of Heritage heading into tonight’s big match-up in Sterling. Yes and most people wouldn’t wake up their college roommate for three consecutive months with a Chuck Barris impression … but we found it funny. Here’s the deal, no team has hard a tougher out-of-district schedule than the Pride. We are betting it pays off in the postseason. Either way, we will be back with more STUFF! (yes, that was a Gong Show reference)

3. Park View (10-4)

Last ranking: 2nd

Last week: Defeated Loudoun County, 73-67; Defeated Fauquier, 58-57.

The Patriots are like a box of … sure, you thought we were going to pull out that old Forest Gump cliche … OK, try this on: The Patriots are like a trip thru the drive-thru in Ashburn … you never know what you are going to get … Will it be the PV team that has won four straight including a nice win over County last week or the team that blew a big lead in the second half vs. PF and was out of synch the entire game against BR? Thomas Mulabah is a force inside but Marcus Freeman might the key to this talented team.

We would say the Raiders are in a big game tonight at PF … but then again, with the Crowded House that is the Dulles District standings … all the games from here on out are big. Speaking of Crowded House … did we mention that tonight’s game is in the Panther Pit?!?

First the Panther Pit tonight for PF and then the Panthers are off to the snake pit … facing Single A power Clarke County on the road and then over to Eastern rival Park View. We think Alex Hogue of PF does the best Kobe Bryant, coming off a screen, falling backwards, dead center 3-point shot in the area.

2. Freedom (11-5)

Don’t look now but the Eagles have won seven of eight with the only loss to County and they were in that contest. Kelsey Buchanan isn’t just tall … she is tall and can run the court like a guard. Broad Run will need to stop her tonight is a big, big game for both teams.

3. Broad Run (9-6)

This may be the biggest game the Spartans play all year when they host Freedom tonight. It comes on the heels of BR’s shocking fourth quarter against Briar Woods last week when they were held to two points. BR needs this game, especially with next week’s trio of County, Park View and Stone Bridge waiting. BR’s Alexis Campbell will provide the leadership tonight.

4. Park View (9-6)

Last week: Lost to County, 72-58; Defeated Seton, 56-47.

If County’s offense is in a league of its own right now … then the Patriots offense surely has its own division … defense is the key for PV as they have given up 58 or more points in seven games this year, going 2-5 in those contests. Otherwise, they are 7-1.

5. Briar Woods (9-6)

Last week: Defeated Broad Run, 46-26; Defeated Thomas Johnson, 45-38.

Falcons pull off biggest upset in several seasons in the Dulles District with last Thursday’s win over the Spartans. Kim Bell is a rebounding machine and Krysta Gardner has more fight in her than just about any other player in the district but when the other players started knocking down outside shots … watch out for the Falcons. Tonight, however, is a trap game for BW as the Falcons surely are looking forward to Friday’s meeting with rival Freedom.

Leesburg (Jan. 25, 2008) – After Park View High School junior guard Marcus Freeman missed his first three shots Thursday he thought: “I might be cold tonight.” Wrong!

Freeman proceeded to make his next 11 field goal attempts, including seven 3-pointers, to lead his Patriots past Loudoun County, 73-67, in a match-up of two of the four teams that formed the logjam called first place in the AA Dulles District.

Park View needed every one of Freeman’s shots to overcome the Raider’s hot shooting back court duo of Brett Tagg and Joe Bushrod who scored 18 and 21 points, respectively, in this entertaining battle in Leesburg.  

Park View is big … and quick, a tough match-up for a Loudoun County team that usually had just two players over 6-feet tall on the court at any given time.

The Patriots controlled the boards in the first quarter overcoming six turnovers to take a 13-7 lead.

In the second quarter however, Loudoun County Coach Brian Blubaugh came up with a way to neutralize the Patriots’ height advantage. His strategy: they can’t rebound a field goal, so just make every shot you take. With a couple minutes to go in the half the Raiders had scored on nine of 11 possessions, only failing to score when they turned the ball over twice before getting a shot in the air.

The half ended with County pulling to within three.
  

Their hot shooting continued into the third quarter and after a spectacular give-and-go in which Timmy McLister scored on a lay-up from a Donne Lucas feed, the Raiders took a 37-32 lead after three minutes of the stanza. But Freeman’s uncanny bombardment helped Park View retake a 50-47 lead going into the fourth, despite a Raider buzzer-beating half court three from Bushrod.  

Park View’s size reasserted itself in the fourth quarter as the 6-2, 275-pound Thomas Mulabah  would score 10 points on two nifty post moves, two fast break lay-ups and 2 of 2 from the foul line. Not only does the big center take up a lot of space in the post where he plays more like a 6-5 center, he also runs the floor like a guard, dishing three pretty assists in the last quarter as Park View cemented the victory.

“Thomas knows he’s going to be double-teamed very night,” said Park View Coach Jeff Schneider. “He’s working hard on seeing the entire court and finding the open man.”

Park View will now host Heritage on Tuesday night with first place at stake as the Pride defeated Potomac Falls on Thursday. Both Park View and Heritage are 6-2 in district with LC, PF and Broad Run just a game back at 5-3. Park View defeated Heritage 55-54 with a last-second comeback on Dec. 21.

Girls Race: If the meet psych sheet is any
indicator the strong Potomac Falls High School team could crack 400
points on their way to winning a third straight title. Briar Woods, the
2007 runner-up, and Heritage appearing to be in the battle behind
PF. The Pride have had some injury issues early in the season but are
now healthy so they could surprise some.

Boys Race:
Broad Run, undefeated in the dual meet season, has to be the favorite
coming in but Potomac Falls lurks as a dangerous team ready to defend
its six-year winning streak. Dominion will figure in the chase for the
title and Heritage could be a spoiler in many races.

Best Bet for a Record:
LC’s Jeremy Begun is swimming well under the meet record in the 100
backstroke set by Begun’s teammate, Ryan Loweth, last year. Loweth swam
a 56.78 while Begun has a seed time of 55.60. Loweth just nipped Begun
at the wall in last year’s district race as the Raiders touched 1-2.

Why there Won’t be Many Broken Records:
The past crop of swimmers in the district has really set the bar high
with the likes of Matt McLean and Andy Mears of PF, Lauren Ritter of
Dominion, Bryan Durazo of Heritgae, Suzanne Schwee and Megan Newell of
Stone Bridge, Nicole Poltash of Broad Run and Tom Maddux and Mary
Boland of Loudoun Valley. That is an elite group of swimmers so any
record broken Friday will be well earned.

Fantastic Field:
The girls 50 freestyle features seven swimmers who have already posted
a state qualifying time. Expect this to be one of the most exciting
races of the evening.

Double Duty: Callum Lawson
of Dominion (100 and 200 free) and Kirby Shook of Potomac Falls (50
free, 100 back) have a good shot at bringing home two individual first
place finishes.

Panther Power: Besides Shook,
the PF girls could see Carla Harvey (200 IM) and Caylyn Tate (500 free)
also on top of the podium. Expect Panther Devin Bowers on the boys side
to challenge for first in the 500 free. The Panthers are also a threat
to win each of the relay races on both the boys and girls sides.

Leesburg (Jan. 24, 2008) – First play in the AA Dulles District boys basketball race will be on the line next Tuesday when Heritage travels to Park View High School after both the Pride and Patriots had key wins Thursday night.

Heritage (6-2 in district, 8-7 overall) knocked off Potomac Falls (5-3, 9-6), 66-53. The Panthers had won six straight and hadn’t lost since Dec. 21 at Loudoun County. Park View (6-2, 10-4) out-scored Loudoun County (5-3, 12-4), 73-67.

Biggest Win in Falcons Hoops History: BW Girls Defeat BR by 20

(Jan. 24, 2008) – The Briar Woods High unleased an amazing 25-2 fourth
quarter run Thursday to shock AA Dulles District power Broad Run, 46-26.

“It is the biggest win in our program’s history,” said Briar Woods coach Ben Thompson. “We just broke loose all of sudden.”

The
loss drops Broad Run (6-2, 9-6) two games behind District Loudoun
County (8-0, 14-2) which won its 12th straight game Thursday, a 72-58
win over Park View (4-4, 8-6). Freedom (6-2, 11-5) moved into a tie
with Broad Run in second place with a 58-39 victory over Dominion.

Briar Woods improves to 4-4 and 8-6.

Potomac
Falls (2-6, 5-9) prevailed over Heritage (1-7, 3-12) in overtime,
57-54, despite trailing by four points with eight seconds to go in
regulation.

The Skinny: Broad Run led this game 24-21 heading into the final
quarter when the Falcons broke loose and out-scored the Spartans, 25-2.
Aminah Aziz had two 3-pointers and a game-high 16 points for BW. Kim
Bell scored 13 with 11 rebounds and Krysta Gardner added 11 points. BW
coach Ben Thompson also said Sydney Harris had a fine game. Alexis
Campbell led BR with 10 and Haley Johnson added nine. The rest of the
Spartans combined for just seven points. BW went 20 fo 26 from the foul
line while BR was 5 of 6. It was Briar Woods first ever victory over
Broad Run.

were down 10-0 to start the game.  Got back in it after half time.  It
was back and forth for most of the second half.  We were down four with
less than 15 seconds to go.  We drove down and Keisha Carter hit a
basket with 8 seconds to cut it to two.  Called time-out to set up a
press.  One of my girls Vanessa Herrera knocked the ball loose and then
tapped it to Symone Berry who hit a 17-foot jumper with about two
seconds on the clock to send it to OT.  In OT it was tied with about 25
seconds left when Raven Short hit a 3-pointer to give us the final
margin.”

Akers scored 25 first-half points, five “3-pointers”, as the Raiders
led 48-30 at the break.  Akers wasn’t the only player scoring for the
Raiders. Forward Kendra Holmes tallied a double-double with 11 points
and 11 rebounds.  Guard Brittany Batts also finished with 11 points and
four steals.  Center Jasmine Hughes also had a nice game with eight
points and eight rebounds. Eight Lady Raiders scored in the contest as
Akers finished with a game high 27 points.”

For Park View, Rachel  Miller and Lauren Tomlinson each scored 15 and Shernise Disney added 11.

Sterling (Jan. 22, 2008) – You could say they were just testing the waters Satuday as Dulles District swimmers hit the Claude Moore Recreation Center pool just six days before the district meet, but there was a lot more on the line as teams swam to clinch undefeated dual meet seasons.

The Potomac Falls girls and Broad Run boys finished with the perfect marks as the Panther girls (7-0) defeated Briar Woods (5-2) and the Spartan boys (7-o) knocked off Dominion (6-1).

Both the Spartan-Titan boys and girls meets were extremely close with the lead changing sides several times;  The BRHS boys finally secured the lead after Tom Casey, Zac Wojahn and Tim Comstock combined for 19 points in the 100 backstroke. BR prevailed 154-139.

The girls were led by strong performances by the distance swimmers, with Taryn Johnston, Laura Finney and Emily Spencer finishing 1-2-3 in the 200 free and Courtney Lofgren, Emily Spencer and Laura Finney finishing 1-2-4 in the 500 free. The girls final was very close with BR winning, 144-141.

Highlights for Dominion included the girls 200 Medley Relay team of Jessica Royce, Kimmy Ledwell, Meghan ****, and Nicole ****, which qualified for the state meet. On the boys side,  Callum Lawson finished the season undefeated in individual events. He is a state qualifier in the 50, 100, 200 free, 200 IM, and 100 fly.

The Potomac Falls girls won handily as they secured a 7-o district dual meet season with a 173-113 win over Briar Woods. The Falcons only loss before Saturday was to Heritage.

Highlights for the Panther girls included Caylyn Tate taking first in the 200 Free and the 100 ******.  Bridget Werner took first in the 100 free and 100 Back. Carla Harvey took first in the 100 fly and an inpressive win in the 200 IM dropping three seconds! Kirby shook won the 50 free with a good time of 25.80.

For the Panther girls, the win made it three straight undefeated dual meet seasons and they accomplished that by finishing first in seven of the eight individual events and winning two relays. The Panthers are looking for a third straight district title Friday.

The PF boys also won, 149-135. The PF boys, 5-2 in dual meet action, are looking to win their 7th straight district title Friday.

Before honoring their seniors in the final home meet in the regular season, the Raiders took an early lead over Heritage High School this past Saturday night at Ida Lee Recreation Center.  Jeremy Begun (Jr.), Nick Cechak (So.), Justin Zeidman (Jr.), and EJ Poell (Fr.) won the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:52.33, an event the Raiders already have a state qualifying time in.  The lady Raiders 200 Medley Relay, made up of Julie Strange (So.), Suzanne Nelson (Sr.), Hannah Nelson (Sr.), and Rachel Wigfield (Jr.), took two seconds off of their 200 Medley Relay
(2:07.79) – Coaches Nick Grzeda and Kristin Moats expect this relay to qualify for States this upcoming Friday at the District Meet.

(Jr.) won the 200 IM (2:15.87), in the girls 200 IM Julie Strange (So.) took second place (2:34.96) and Megan Betcher (Jr.) claimed third (2:52.00), while Justin Zeidman (Jr.) and Rachel Wigfield (Jr.) both took second place in the 50 Free with time of 23.84 and 27.57.

At the break after the 50 Free, the Raiders bade farewell to their ten seniors who are graduating this June.  Kelsey Blair, Ashley Cameron, Kempsey Clark, Statia Gibson, Hannah Nelson, Suzanne Nelson, Dani Neuharth-Keusch, Colleen O’Neil, Emily Voreas, and Tyler Willson will be fondly remembered by their teammates and coaches.

It was after the break when Heritage began to take control of the field, but not before Justin Zeidman (Jr.) took first in the 100 Fly (58.76) and Suzanne Nelson (Sr.) took first in the 100 Free (58.17).  Kelly McGrath (So.) claimed third in the 100 Fly (1:22.93), Emily Voreas (Sr.) took third in the 100 Free (1:06.71) and another third came from Danny Ford (Jr.) in the 500 Free (6:45.67). 

Junior Jeremy Begun claimed another undefeated meet in his individual events, coasting to a first place finish with a 1:02.71 in the 100 Backstroke – Begun has already claimed a state qualifying time in this event amongst other events.  Julie Strange (So.) earned at second place finish in the 100 Back with a 1:11.94 and Nick Cechak (So.) earned a best time with his third place finish in the 100 Breaststroke (1:19.25).
 

Senior Suzanne Nelson, who has been the Raider’s hugest asset this season, was outtouched by Heritage’s Kaitlin Pawlowicz in the 100 Breaststroke – Pawlowicz went 1:09.43 and Nelson a 1:09.84.  This is Suzanne’s best time for the season in this event and she will be going for the District title this upcoming Friday. 

Next Friday, January 25th, LCHS will be at Claude Moore Recreation Center for the Dulles District Swim Meet.  The action starts at 7:00 PM.

Heritage showed its depth in winning the meet with Pawlowicz, Nicole Wright and Valerie McMullan all combining to win two relays, the 200 and 400 free. In addition, Pawlowicz captured the 100 ******, Wright the 200 and 500 free and McMullan the 50 free.

Jordan Gold, a winner in the 100 back, was on the winning 400 free relay and Bailey Rember, a winner in the 200 IM, was on the winning 200 relay. Also for the Pride girls, Jessica Sovereign won the 100 fly.

On the boys side, Geoffrey Wright captured the 50 and 100 free and was on the winning 400 free relay along with Randy Mitchell, Ian Frye and Danny Durazo. Mitchell was also on the winning 200 free relay with Korey Flinton, Sam Mull and Dusty Skyler.

Individually, Frye took the 200 free, Durazo the 500 free, and Rick Baker the 100 ******.

(Jan. 20, 2008) – Loudoun Valley High School swept Heritage in non-district basketball action Saturday with the Viking boys and girls both holding the Pride to just 39 points.

The Viking boys held the high-scoring Pride to just nine points in the first half.  Josh Mallory had 16 points and eight rebounds and Cody Swain had 13 points and seven rebounds for LV, while DJango DeGree added 10 points.

Perrin Raudabaugh and Jessica Mullen each scored 14 for the LV girls with Dijana Haracic added 12 points. Necole Sterling had a game-high 21 for Heritage.
