LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

(Aug. 28, 2008) – The Loudoun Valley High School volleyball team opened its season this week with a win over Robinson in four games. The Vikes host Stone Bridge in the Bulldogs season-opener tonight in Purcellville at 7:30 p.m.

In other action, Freedom dropped matches to Gar-Field and Stonewall Jackson and Park View fell to Potomac High School.

Stonewall Jackson 3, Freedom 0

Reports Coach Tsuda: Tonight the Freedom Eagles varsity volleyball team lost 3-0 against the Stonewall-Jackson Raiders of Manassas. The scores were 13-25, 11-25, and 19-25.  Short point rallies were sparked by solid serving performances by Katie Maxwell, Sarah Chapman, and Kathryn Ivey.  The young team is definitely improving its defense as demonstrated by the number of digs and saves against the strong Raiders.

The Jr. Varsity Team lost 0-2.  Scores were 24-26 and 19-25.  The team’s energetic defense produced numerous saves and blocks throughout both games.

The Freshmen Team lost 0-2.  Scores were 17-25 and 16-25.

Potomac 3, Park View 1
Coach Koscinski reports:
PV                            16   15    25    19
Potomac Senior High   25    25   23    25

Highlights:

Next match- Thursday, 8/28 Stonebridge at Loudoun Valley.

Gar-Field 3, Freedom 1

Coach Tsuda reports: Freedom lost its first match 1-3 against the Gar-Field Indians.

The scores were 11-25, 18-25, 25-14, 22-25.  The team retained their confidence through several tough rallies in the third and fourth games.  Timely blocks by Jenna Flanigin and Kaitlyn LaMantia started each rally.  Consistent serving by all the players maintained the momentum. This young team demonstrated its mettle during the tough times.

The Freedom Jr. Varsity VB Team won its first match 2-1. After splitting the first two games, the third game was the proverbial nail-biter to the end.

Team Joe: Tee It Up for a Good Cause!

See flyer below to register for tournament and sponsorship information

Special to LoudounPrepSports.com

(Aug. 28, 2008) – Plans are underway for the Second Annual Team Joe Charity Golf Tournament.  Last year’s inaugural tournament was a huge success, raising $25,000 that was donated to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at INOVA Fairfax Hospital for Children. We are hoping to raise even more this year!

Joe Petrella was born 12 weeks early, and entered this world weighing only 1½ pounds.  He had to fight for his life the moment he took his first breath.  Joe was fortunate to have a team of doctors, specialists, and nurses waiting for him when he arrived at the NICU moments after being born.  They diligently looked after him to make sure he survived those critical first few minutes, hours, and days, and never left his side for the next 104 days.  These wonderful people do this for many of the high risk births from all over our region.  Together, we can help them to continue to give the outstanding care to all the miracle babies who enter their doors.

The hospital will soon be breaking ground on the construction of a new NICU.  As part of this project they will have a family lounge that will be inside of the NICU.  This is a much needed addition to the facility in that parents will have a place to take a break, meet with doctors, and spend time with other family members… all within the walls of the NICU.  We will be providing the funds for the furnishing of this room, so the more funds we raise, the more amenities we’ll be able to provide.  This lounge will be called “Joe’s Room,” and with your help we’ll create a comfortable space where families can take a much needed break and spend more time closer to their baby.

Please take a moment to look over the Team Joe Golf attachment.  We would really appreciate it if you can help us in any way possible, either by sponsoring, playing, donating prizes, volunteering, or anything else you could do to help.  Please pass on this email to anyone you know who might also be interested in helping us.  We know that everyone has a very hectic schedule, but we would really appreciate you taking the time to help us.

Please visit our website, www.teamjoe.org.  Be sure to look at the Team Joe Golf 2007 page and all of our wonderful sponsors.  Without their help, and the help of many volunteers, the tournament would have not been such a huge success.  Please help us make 2008 even better!

Special offer: Register and pay by September 3rd and you will automatically be entered in a special raffle.  We sold out the tournament last year, so secure your spot and register early.  Entry deadline is September 26th.

Thanks!

(Aug. 27, 2008) – Freedom High School edged Broad Run Monday by three strokes at Lansdowne, 168-171, in AA Dulles District dual meet action.

Also Monday, Briar Woods and Loudoun County remain in a dead heat in the district regular-season title race with the Falcons defeating *** View by 21 strokes at Algonkian, 154-175, and the Raiders some 20 strokes better than Potomac Falls, 148-168, at Westpark. In other Dulles play, Heritage earned its first dual meet win with a 166-174 victory over Dominion at Goose Creek.

Freedom 168, Broad Run 171 @ Lansdowne

Ashburn – Alex Choi continued his fine play with a 37 at Lansdowne to lead the Eagles past Broad Run.

Tyler Campos also turned in a 37 for the Spartans but Choi was backed by a 42 from Jason Scrivo, a 44 from Nick Lee and a 45 by Tyler Blake.

The Spartans scoring was rounded out by Tim Sanders (43), Isaac Wharton (45) and Austin Moser (46).

Loudoun County 148, Potomac Falls 168 @ Westpark

Leesburg – The Raiders kept pace with the Falcons in the Dulles District regular-season race with four scores under 40 on Monday at Westpark.

Michael Tondi led the Panthers with a 39 followed by Michael Serone (40), Brett Johnson (43) and Scott Trump (47).

Sterling – In another show of the Falcon’s team’s depth, the Briar Woods Falcons defeatged Park View by 21 strokes in a nine hole match at Algonquin – 154 to 175. Despite fresh aeration of both fairways and greens, Robbie Mitchell led the Falcons with an even par 36. He was followed by Ethan Ochs at 38 and Jon Howard with a 39. T.J. Bailey closed the scoring four with a 41. Ryan Geckler carded a 44 after being beaned by a wayward shot (medical attention not required, but a nice souvenir, nonetheless).  Troy Ioannou finished his very first competitive match at 48.

Shot of the day for BW went to Ethan Ochs with a 4 iron from just over 200 yards on the 6th hole to put him within putting range of an eagle.

Jake Wilton and Sam Ryan each shot 42 for Park View. Josh Carter (45) and Trevor Scales (48) rounded out the Patriots scoring.

Park View Must Rebuild to Maintain 3-Year Run
By Dan Sousa

Senior Content Edtior, LoudounPrepSports.com

seventh in a series of 10.

Sterling – Every year there seems to be a reason to question Park View’s ability to stand at the top of the Dulles District standings.

Park View loses Mickey Thompson as head coach to newly opened Stone Bridge in 2000 … and the Pats kept on winning.

Park View loses Charlie Pierce as head coach to newly opened Briar Woods in 2005 … and the Pats kept on winning.

Park View loses one of the top running backs in VHSL history with Deric Dudinski’s graduation in 2007 … and the Pats kept on winning, going 9-0 before falling to Broad Run in the final week of the regular season and PV avenged that loss the next week in the playoffs.

Now in 2008, Park View must open with record-setting quarterback C.J. Leizear having graduated as well as all-state lineman Thomas Mulabah and other experienced players that filled 16 of 22 starting spots. And the question again is can Park View keep winning?

It will take some quick maturity on the part of some young players as PV will rely on some new faces including a trio of sophomores to fill out their linebacking group. They will take the field on a district roll that includes an 18-2 mark against Dulles opponents the past three years.

Eric Palma (5-9, 209), Nick Braddock (5-11, 192) and Garrett Dalton (6-0, 193) are the three sophomores expected to play a big role with Palma also starting on the O-line.

“I’m excited about the potential of this group of players,” said PV coach Andy Hill.

Leizear broke all the school records in passing and will be tough to replace with two juniors battling for the starting spot, Brandon Lee and Sawyer Hackett. Lee impressed coaches by increasing his bench press in the offseason from 175 pounds to 245.

There will be plenty of offensive targets with running backs Brandon Absher and Daryus Beale back and Tommy Sedeski, one of the area’s top WR’s as a sophomore, back along with Division I prospect Kenny Smith at tight end. Smith didn’t play much in his junior campaign with a knee injury and both Smith and Sedeski were on the sidelines with injuries during August scrimmages. PV will need both on the field in September.

The Pats have other receivers including Josh Jones, K.C. Onyeador and Drew Mason. The big question is can the PV offensvie line protect the quarterbacks long enough to get the ball off. Look for Hill, always creative in the play calling department, to improvise some plays to get the ball into the hands of his skilled players as quick as possible.

You only have to look at the playing fields of Sterling Park and see all the youth football players in gear to know that PV should have plenty of help in years to come and some of the youth may get their chance this season including a freshman lineman Daniel Villalobos (6-4, 250) who could be the next Mulabah for the Patriots.

Sir, Duke
PV junior WR Tommy Sedeski’s brother, Park View all-time leading rusher Derick Dudinski is playing at James Madison this season for the Dukes. Dudinski played at La Salle as a freshman but the university dropped football as a varsity sport. Dudinski rushed for 5,708 yards in his career and 58 touchdowns

Hill Staff Blues
Park View had a tough offseason in terms of its football staff as offensive line coach Danny McGrath took the head coaching job at Loudoun Valley. One of the freshman coaches, Scott Steele, went with McGrath to LV. Defensive coordinator Mick Mullins had to step down due to personal issues and then a newly hired freshman coach passed away during the first week of August practices.

More than for Just Kicks
Junior K.C. Onyeador, cousin of Potomac Falls soccer standout Uche Onyeador, and a star soccer player in his own right is out for football for the first time at Park View. While naturally stepping into the kicking role, Onyeador could be a real surprise in other areas as he is a tremendous athlete.

New Turf
Park View got a much needed turf makeover on its stadium field with Bermuda grass installed in the offseason.

Quotable
“With young guys if we get a couple of early wins, then they will start to believe everything is paying off.”
    — Park View coach Andy Hill

Dulles District Golf Round-up: BW, BR, LC and PF All Win

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

(Aug. 23, 2008) – The AA Dulles District high school golf season moved full swing into the dual meet action Thursday with a full slate of action. Briar Woods, Broad Run, Loudoun County and Potomac Falls all came away with victories.

Briar Woods defeated Freedom at South Riding, 151-160; Broad Run held off a feisty Dominion squad, 155-161, at Lansdowne; Loudoun County handled Heritage, 161-173; and Potomac Falls knocked off neighbor Park View, 163-173, at Lowes Island. All play was nine holes.

Briar Woods 151, Freedom 160
Despite the slippery greens and narrow fairways at South Riding – and the absence of Carl Brendes and Michael Birmingham at a junior golf event — the Falcons posted four scores in the 30s with freshman Adam Ochs shooting even par 36 with Jon Howard just one over at 37. Robbie Mitchell and Ryan Geckler both closed with 39.

BW coach Bob Vitti reports that the shot of the day for BW was Mitchell’s approach on No. 9 which was within inches of rolling in, even though he was left with a hefty birdie putt.

Alex Choi led the Eagles with a 37 followed by Jason Scrivo at 39 and Tyler Blake and Nick Lee both at 42.

BW has never lost to Freedom in golf, winning in 21 consecutive events against their mid-county rivals.

Broad Run 155, Dominion 161
Ryan Cartee fired a 37 and Isaac Wharton (38) and Tyler Campos (39) added strong roounds for the Spartans in the dual meet win.  Andrew Londos shot 41 for BR.

Dominion was led by a 39 from Dalton Brown and 40 by Kevin Cook. Michael Biller (41) and Rich Boudreau (41) rounded out the Titan scoring.

Loudoun County 161, Heritage 173
Brantley Kushner led the Raiders with a 39 followed closely by Kevin Cook (40), Michael Walker (41) and Dan Jackson (41).

Potomac Falls 163, Park View 173
Michael Tondi (39) and Brett Johnson (40) led the Panthers to the dual meet victory Thursday. Scott Trump and Shon Raven each shot 42 to round out the scoring for PF.

Park View was led by Jake Wilton at 40 followed by Josh Carter (41), Trevor Scales (44) and Steven Balik (48).

All 10 Loudoun Schools to Tee it Up at Cheers Sports Open

Golf Sponsored by www.golfurheadoff.com

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

Sterling (Aug. 17, 2008) – For Dulles District golf teams Monday’s 2008 Cheers Sports Open at Algonkian is a chance to go up against AA power Briar Woods High School which has captured all but one district event dating back to the 2006 distirct tournament. The Falcons shot 294 last week to win the first district mini tournament by nine strokes and a win Monday, in what serves as the second Dulles mini tournament, would put BW in a comfortable position to repeat their regular-seasond district title.

Monday’s event, however, also includes AAA Loudoun Valley and Stone Bridge, making it the only golf tournament on the season to feature all 10 Loudoun schools. So expect bragging rights to be on the line as the Falcons look to match scorecards with Valley which opened the season with a 291 to win the Curly Licklider at Shenandoah Valley. BW finished third at that 23-team tournament with a 298.

Last year Valley brough a split squad to the Cheers tournament as they were also competing elsewhere but the Vikes are fielding their “A” line-up Monday in promises to be some exceptional prep golf. Valley followed its Licklider win with a victory in the Battlefield District first mini tournament.

Monday’s event will include medals for individuals finishing first through sixth as well as closest to the pin and long drive contests. Cheers Sports is providing all awards and lunch to the players.

The Falcons line-up Monday does not include defending district champion Michael Birmingham, but BW is plenty deep with six players shooting 77 or under in the win at Raspberry Falls in the first Dulles District mini tournament.

(Aug. 12, 2008) – The two Loudoun teams that advanced to the state tournament in 2007, Briar Woods in AA and Loudoun Valley in AAA, have enough talent returning in 2008 that you can almost book their tee times for the postseason.

If it wasn’t bad enough news to the Dulles District competition that Briar Woods had its entire starting line-up back, including defending district champion Michael Birmingham, try this on for size: Birmingham may not be the best player on his team some rounds this season.

“He has two or three guys chasing him on a regular basis,” said BW coach Bob Vitti.

Freshman Adam Ochs is a newcomer that is a force to be reckoned with in the district as he shot a 69 in qualifying. Briar Woods had one of the area’s lowest qualifying cuts in 2007 in the low 90s and this year the Falcons had an amazingly low cut mark of 84 to make the team.

All of the “****** B’s” return that helped Briar Woods capture the regular-season championship and the Region II title including Birmingham, Carl Brendes, Spencer Burcak and T.J. Bailey. Robbie Mitchell and Ethan Ochs are solid bets to be in a line-up that features seven seniors and four juniors.

BW surprised some teams in 2006 with a victory in the district tournament and in 2007 they were the frontrunner all year, faltering only when they got to states. The talented team would like a return engagement.

“It was invaluable for them to find out what the next level of competition is all about,” said Vitti.

Birmingham, for his part, welcomes the challenges, even when they come in the form of a ninth grader.

“Adam should help us on the march to go to states,” said Birmingham.

Briar Woods found out, however, that to rule Loudoun, you also have to tangle with the AAA teams and Loudoun Valley in the first week of the season picked right up where they left off in 2007 when they introduced themselves to the Northwest Region by taking the title on the road to earn a trip to states.

In 2007 it was Battlefield standing in the way of the Vikes in the Cedar Run District and Valley has the upperhand already in 2008 after taking the district’s first preseason tournament.

“This is a huge win,” said long-time LV coach Gary McKay after the Vikes shot 304 to best Battlefield by two strokes.

It was especially sweet for LV since last year the two schools went to sudden death in a dual match that the Bobcats won.

“They have some great players … it’s good to beat them,” said sophomore Scott Davidson.

Unlike the senior laden BW team, the Vikes have a corp group of sophomores and juniors in the line-up which could spell the start of a nice run for McKay’s team.

Valley was actually a bit down with the score after posting 291 and 296 to start the season, the first a Curly Licklider Memorial Tournament record and the second a Valley school record, 8-over par at Raspberry Falls.

Dulles District Preview

Broad Run: Don’t count the Spartans out. Broad Run has been knocking on the door for several years but hasn’t been able to climb over Potomac Falls, Briar Woods and Loudoun County. The Spartans return a potent 1-2 combo in Kevin Yerks and Tyler Campos. It should be BR, LC and BW fighting it out come district tournament time.

Chip Shot: The Spartans lay claim to the top practice facility in the county as they have the run of Lansdowne.

Dominion: The Titans look to be much improved in coach Anne Gasser’s second season as all but two players return including senior Michael Biller. The Titans will often two girls in their line-up with senior Keri Muse and sophomore Shelby Shote.

Chip Shot: Like BR coach John Costello, Dominion’s Gasser is a hoops coach as she is in charge of the Titans girls program. There is a tradition in the county of basketball coaches doing well in golf with PF boys coach Jeff Hawes winning a state title with the Panthers.

Freedom: Don’t overlook the Eagles as they are building into a team that could defeat anybody with record setting tournament and dual meet scores already to start the 2008 season, including a 329 at South Riding in a win over Dominion. Juniors Tyler Blake and Alex Choi give Freedom a 1-2 punch and sophomore newcomer Chris Kennedy is a promising addition.

Chip Shot: The Eagles may be a year away from a district title challenge as they only have one senior on the roster with four juniors and three sophomores. Freedom golf coach Ryan Price is also Heritage’s varsity baseball coach.

Heritage: The Pride lost some senior leadership, especially in the form of Christian Darden, one of the top players in the district the past two years. In fact, Heritage has seven freshman or sophomores on the roster but the kids may be all right as freshman John Conley shot a 75 at the Curly Licklider to lead the team.

Chip Shot: The Pride have more girls on their roster than any other team in the county with four making the squad. Coach John Dugger said he actually would have kept five but one athlete, who would have made the cut, opted to go out for volleyball instead.

Loudoun County: This may the season to get ther Raiders because coach John Laycock may be building towards something big in 2009. The Raiders have a strong group of sophomores, led by Andrew Brenneman, Kevin Cook, Sam Early, Brantley Kushner and Matt Tomasonne — all in the starting line-up at Licklider and LC finished within shouting distance of BW. The Raiders were nipped by BW in 2006 and missed the regional playoffs. LC would love to return the favor.

Chip Shot: LC only lost three players to graduation but one of them was standout Tommy Medaglia.

Park View: Larry Hinders returns for this second season as coach of the Park View program. The Patriots do not have a strong tradition in golf like they do in football but the same was true of girls tennis and last spring the Pats took the Dulles District title. Still, there is a lot of work to be done. Since some of the PV players don’t play as much in the offseason as players from other programs, expect PV, like last year, to improve as the season goes along. PV has almost its entire line-up back as the Pats didn’t have any seniors in 2007. Look for Steven Balik, Trevor Scales and Jake Wilton to take turns leading PV with others to emerge.

Chip Shot: Hinders won a state title as the coach of the girls track and field team in 2006. The Pats repeated in 2007 but Hinders did not coach the team.

Potomac Falls: The Panthers may be in a bit of a rebuilding year after making regional runs the past couple of seasons. PF has lost some of the top players in the district to graduation in Nick Vico (2006), Wyatt Endres (2007) and Chris Abt (2007). That is a lot of talent to replace. Look for senior Michael Tondi to provide the leadership for PF and Brett Johnson had a good freshman season and should be a player to keep an eye on.

Chip Shot: PF’s new coach Jason Leuck not only coached the Panthers boys lacrosse team last spring but Leuck lays claim to being a sponsored snowboarder and physics teacher. He is paid by his sponsor to do photo shoots and competitions out west. A bad spill several years ago, in which Leuck flew 100 feet in the air and split his head open and had to be airlifted off a mountain, left him with six months of rehab. Leuck took up snowboard when he was 15 and has been sponsored since 2001. The VCU grad has a golf connection as his brother Curtis is a semi-pro player.

AAA

Stone Bridge: The Bulldogs have been a bit of a mystery … a school that draws a good bit of attendance from not one, but two, golf communities (Belmont Country Club and Lansdowne) doesn’t grab a lot of titles in golf but the Bulldogs football program plays like a blue-collar school located in a depressed PA steele town. SB did have one of the top players in the Northern Region last year in Josh Apple but he is one and done after the transfer student graduated. Eddie Cutler, Erik DeLong and Russell Moore lead a team that will face some good competition from other communities with proud golf traditions such as Langley, McLean and Vienna.

Chip Shot: Apple is planning on playing at George Mason University this coming season.

Mini tournaments and why the have Max value: So you see … mini tournaments aren’t really mini. They are quite valuable as teams can earn key points towards their district titles. In the Dulles District, the first mini tournament on Aug. 13 at Raspberry Falls counts towards one-third of the district title and next Monday’s second mini at Algonkian make it two-thirds towards the title. The dual meet season then counts for the final third. Here is how Dulles team did in 2007 (tournament marks are shown as records with first place receiving a 7-0 mark and last place 0-7).

Briar Woods 13-1 tournaments 7-0 duals 20-1 total
Potomac Falls 13-1, 1-5-1, 14-6-1 total
Loudoun County 9-5, 4-2-1, 13-7-1 total
Broad Run 8-6, 5-2, 13-8 total
Heritage 7-7, 3-4, 10-11 total
Freedom 4-10, 4-3, 8-13 total
Dominion 2-12, 2-5, 4-17 total
Park View 0-14, 1-6, 1-20 total

You can see that Broad Run, despite going 5-2 in the dual meet portion, didn’t have a title shot after a 8-6 start in the two tournaments. Basically, no team will wrap up the title tomorrow at Raspberry Falls, but some teams may play their way into holes too big to climb out of.

In the AAA Cedar Run District, Loudoun Valley already owns a 7-0 record with a first in the mini tournament Monday. That win is even more important than the Dulles District tournaments as the Cedar Run title is figured with a 40-40-20 formula … basically you get full points for defeating teams in the two tournaments but only half points in the dual and trimeets.

The Liberty District doesn’t hold mini tournaments.
