(Aug. 12, 2008) _ The AA Dulles District dual golf meet season teed off Monday with Freedom shooting a school record 329 in South Riding and big victories by Briar Woods and Loudoun County.

Defending district champion Briar Woods blasted Potomac Falls by 50 strokes at Brambleton, 306-356, and Loudoun County cruised to a 87-stroke win over Park View at Westpark, 313-387.

Freedom 329, Dominion 345

South Riding – Fourth-year Freedom out-scored Dominion, 329-345, at South Riding Monday to break the school dual match mark by four strokes. The previous Eagle record was 333 shot in 2006 against Broad Run.

Junior Tyler Blake led Freedom with a 74 followed by junior Nick Lee’s 80. Junior Alex Choi (85) and sophomore Chris Kennedy (90) rounded out the scoring for the Eagles. Dominion was led by senior Michael Biller with an 83 followed by senior Dalton Brown (86), sophomore Shelby Shote (87) and senior Tyler Martinez (89).

The win marks the 11th straight vicotry over the Titan for the Eagles according to Freedom coach Ryan Price.

Freedom is 1-0 in dual matches with an overall mark of 16-7 when tournament play if calculated. Dominion falls to 0-1 and 10-13.

Briar Woods 306, Potomac Falls 356

Ashburn – The Falcons got a pair of 75’s from seniors Michael Birmingham and Carl Brendes to open up their Dulles District regular-season title defense at Brambleton Monday with a 306-356 win over Potomac Falls.

Freshman Adam Ochs and junior Nathan Burcak each added a 78 as BW sizzled on their home course.

Potomac Falls was led by senior Michael Tondi with a 84.

The Falcons improved to 1-0 and 21-2 while the Panthers sit at 0-1 and 16-7. PF is in a rebuilding mode after the graduation of Wyatt Endres and Chris Abt from the 2007 team and Nick Vico from 2006. BW, on the other hand, has not lost a starter from its lineup in the past three seasons.

Loudoun County 313, Park View 387

Leesburg – Loudoun County opened the Dulles District dual meet season with a solid 313 at Westpark in a 87-stroke win over Park View.

The Raiders were led by sophomore Michael Linville with a 76 followed by junior Dan Jackson (78), sophomore Brantley Kushner (79) and sophomore Kevin Cook (80).

Park View, in its first action of the season, was led by senior Steven “Minuteman” Balik with a 93 with senior Trevor Scales and sophomore Jake Wilton both posting 96.

LC improves to 1-1 in dual meets (1-0 in district) and 18-6 overall while Park View is 0-1 and 0-1.

Miley Cyrus Appearance in Loudoun!

Miley Cyrus Appearance in Loudoun!

Okay, so I’m not the most honest person in the world, and the “tween queen” isn’t visiting Loudoun, but I gotta get some page views because I’m back sports fans, and boy am I excited!

I’ve enjoyed my brief retirement from my blog, doing things that retired people like playing a ton of golf, having a part time job, and watching endless hours of “The Price is Right”. All I’m missing is an AARP card and waist-high khakis. But don’t worry folks, I’ve put my summer “retirement” behind me, and hopefully my return will be nothing like that other return from retirement that a certain someone who used to play for the Green Bay Packers is going through right now.

Anyways, as the fall sports are getting under way, here is the (un)official Park View Fall Sports Preview.

Park View has just put down Bermuda grass on its football field, so naturally, we can expect the team to be hot, hot, hot. After last year’s heartbreaking loss to Sherando in the Region II final, the team is looking to retain the past glory that is synonymous with football here in Sterling Park. Junior Tommy Sedeski, a good friend of mine and one of the best receivers in the area, recently gave me the scoop on what the team has been up to and what we can expect in the upcoming season.

Although the team has not suited up for a game since the day after Thanksgiving last year, its players have been working hard. Over 40 players have been lifting weights with the team almost every single day since December, and a number of skill players have been participating in 7 on 7 passing leagues over the offseason. In addition, I’ve been told this is one of the closest teams ever and each player has promised to give everything for the guy next to him. In fact, the team’s motto this year is “ONE.”

With a more athletic team than last year, a bunch of fresh faces on the sidelines, and a number of goals set by the players and coaches alike, expect the Patriots to be even better than last season. Most people who follow football here in the county have said that Park View won’t be able to play on the same level as last year’s team but any of the players will tell you different. There are no all-Americans on this team, rather a bunch of kids who know how to play and win, and down the stretch, that’s all that matters. The Patriots open their season August 29th at AAA rival Herndon and I have no doubt that every sports fan in the county already has November 7th open.

Am I getting ahead of myself? Probably, and there is sure to be some good football between now and then, but, as a fan, I cannot wait for The Rematch. (Editor’s note: Of course Steven is talking about the Broad Run-Park View game! For those of you living under rocks the past year …)

The Park View golf season got off to a great start with a chip-in birdie by senior Josh Carter on the first hole at Algonkian Golf Course on the first day of try-outs.  Coach Larry Hinders returns for his second season leading the team, and the Patriots are returning virtually all of the players from last year. After winning their first match in four years last season, look for the team to continue to improve and challenge other teams in the district. The golf team opens their season August 11 against Loudoun County at Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club.

In addition to being head track coach and the second-coolest math teacher at Park View, James Nosal is now the head coach of the cross country team. With a great deal of experience, he looks to turn things around for this program and improve the ability of Park View’s runners. Leading the girls’ team are seniors Lauren Rymer and Sarah Taylor and on the boys’ team, a number of runners are all vying for the top few spots. By the way, I have to thank the team for letting me run with them over the summer, even if some of them did try and get me lost in Claude Moore Park on purpose.

Coach Kathy Koscinski again leads the volleyball team for a third season at the helm. Despite the fact that some of the best players in recent school history graduated this past year, there is still a lot to look forward to this season. Hopefully, hours of workouts and offseason practices will pay off and the team will have a shot at competing for the district title.

Coach Nina Sisler comes to Park View from Potomac Falls High School, where she headed a very successful cheerleading program. After a disappointing finish at last year’s district tournament, the team will adopt a completely different routine and looks to surprise the other teams in the county. Park View will again host an invitational on October 4th and you can catch the squad cheering on the Patriots to victory at any football game.

And by the way, last year, my fall preview knocked on cheerleading, but I know better than to not include them this year (especially since I am dating a cheerleader). That’s all I’ve got for now. I’m off to listen to “7 Things” and whether you want to admit or not, I know most all of you are going to as well …

The Novocain Diaries

Yes, I know I am supposed to be in school right now but before you go and call the truant officer you must know that I just had my wisdom teeth out and am sitting at home with nothing to do. So what does this mean? Will my blog have even less wisdom than usual? Is my inability to talk for several days a blessing for my parents and girlfriend? Will I be better balanced now that I have the extra weight out of my head and be able to fix my fade when I play golf? (And yes it’s a controlled fade, NOT a slice…) Well one thing is for sure, I’ve just stopped texting my friends who are sitting in class right now and am in need of something to do, so I thought I might type up an entry.

The winter season is winding down and Park View has fared pretty well. We have had two athletes qualify for states in their sports; Amber Kerico in swim and Linda Poplawski in gymnastics. Our wrestling team has done well and is preparing for the upcoming district tournament, where they and six other teams will look to unseat Dominion as the district champions. Both basketball teams have also done well and are near the top of the district. There is a good chance both teams could return to the district tournament finals and hopefully both teams will make a run. All in all, it has been a pretty good season for the Patriots.

Tonight, of course, is Senior Night for the Boys’ Basketball team and I know everyone is proud of all they have accomplished throughout their high school careers. Players like Danny Foley, whose dunks send fans to their feet, Thomas Mulabah, who is one of the strongest inside men in the area, and Brett Dufford, who has made many beautiful blocks that have resulted in many turnovers, will all be missed. Other seniors include Brock Pennington, CJ Leizear, and Marcellous Bowie. The Patriots have Freedom and Briar Woods to play, and are fighting with Potomac Falls for the second seed in the district tournament. I know everyone here on both sides of Route 7 in Sterling would like to see another rematch somewhere down the road, and it looks like this may occur in the district semi-finals, but hey, anything can happen.

I’d like to make this entry longer, but right now I’m feeling pretty bad and those wonderful pain medications are starting to kick in so I’ve gotta go lie down. I hope everyone has a great three-day weekend and make sure to yell extra loud at the game tonight because I won’t be there.

The Mega-Super Huge Fantastic Mid-Winter Blog Entry

Yeah, I know. I haven’t updated my blog in over a month, but hey, I’ve been pretty busy. But fear not my friends, because I am making a comeback greater than that of the 2004 Red Sox, greater than Rocky’s, and greater than Roger Clemens’ comeback last year (and I didn’t even have to use steroids…)

In order to make up for my absence, here is what may be the biggest entry that I have ever had, covering all winter sports. I should also note that although this is my biggest entry ever it is still shorter than most of Dan’s blog entries (but hey, he is known as the Ramblin’ Man…)

The boys’ basketball team is halfway through their season and in a tie for first. I recently interviewed Coach Jeff Schneider about the team’s performance up to this point.

SB:There are five teams crowded at the top of the district and it seems any of them could take the district title this year. Aside from your team, who do you see as the biggest threat to take the title?

JS: I really couldn’t say. We have each taken turns defeating each other so far this season. It depends on match-ups and who’s hot at a particular time. I worry about every opponent.

SB:This team has seen several players depart since the season began. Do the remaining players have enough stamina to protect leads or make comebacks in the fourth quarters of games?

JS: So far, we’ve done pretty well protecting leads, with the game against Potomac Falls being the one exception. The fourth quarter has typically been our best quarter all season, so the loss of those players hasn’t affected us too much yet.

SB: Is there something that the team, or a player, has not done so far that you would like to see incorporated into the team’s game plan in future games?

JS: I would like to see us play with a lot more intensity throughout the game, not just crunch time. I feel that if we could do that, we could build some good leads that would allow us to play deeper into our bench and give us some valuable experience for the entire team. Plus, it would be a little easier on the stress level of the coach.

SB: All of the team’s losses this season have come on the road. Do you think this is because of the mentality the players have or the fans of the other teams or is it another reason?

JS: Our losses were not just on the road, they were also to good teams and in tough places to play with great fans. However, we are fortunate in that our most difficult road games are behind us and now those teams have to come and play us here at Park View.

SB: This week the team plays Heritage and Potomac Falls at home. Are these “must wins” for the Patriots?

JS: When you are competing for a district title, every game is a must win, but these games probably more so because we are bunched at the top with these teams.

SB: Finally, the team has lost several close games and the last time we talked you emphasized that the team’s motto this year is “One More.” What will it take for the players to get “One More” in the next couple of games.

JS: Three of our four losses have been by 6 points or less. To help us to get that “one more” win, we need to play as a team. Our struggles have occurred when we played as individuals instead of as a team. We have several individual players who are capable of carrying the team on their backs in crunch time for a win, the problem is, they can’t look to do that all of the time. We believe that when we play as a team, we can’t be beaten.

The girls’ basketball team is also in the hunt for the postseason. Coach Kim Grigley has the team at .500 in the Dulles District and although it seems that County has run away with the title already, there is a battle going on for second and the Lady Patriots are right in the thick of things. Junior Rachel Miller has paced the team and is among the district leaders in scoring and the team has also gotten strong play out of freshman Shernise Disney. With games against Heritage (1-7 in the district) and Potomac Falls (2-6) this week, the Lady Patriots should again be over .500 when this week ends and in position to grab that second seed in the district tournament.

The wrestling team has competed in numerous tournaments throughout the region this winter. A number of wrestlers have placed high at a number of tournaments. Seniors Sean Scales, Elias Barahona, and Dylan Smith as well as juniors Stephen Penna and Bobby Cockerille have paced the team this year. Although they haven’t had the greatest performances in some dual and tri-matches do not worry. Coach Greg Mitchell often rests players to keep them from burning out before districts. For more information about wrestling in the county visit The Takedown blog.

The swimmers finished off their season this past week at Claude Moore where they competed in the district tournament. The girls’ team, which was winless throughout the season, came in sixth place in the tournament, placing ahead of Loudoun County and Dominion. Several swimmers placed well enough to advance to states, including sophomore Amber Kericko, who may be one of the best underclass swimmers in the area. The boys’ team, however, could not escape the district cellar and came in eighth place. However, the team is primarily made up of swimmers who are in their first year in the sport, and with a number of underclassmen, all I’ve gotta say is “Wait ‘till next year!”

The gymnastics team has fared well this year and outscored both Briar Woods and Broad Run in the Glory Days Grill meet held last night. All throughout the season these girls have performed better than expected and have been lead by junior Linda Poplawski and sophomore Brittany Zartman. Districts are this Saturday at Heritage and although Park View has not performed the best here in the past, look for them to be near the top of the standings at the end of the tournament

Well, it’s good to be back and my next entry won’t take so long to put up. There are some great games this week and I hope to see everyone at the big game against Potomac Falls this Friday (Tickets can be bought throughout the week from the AD’s office).

Holiday Special…

It could be, perhaps, that my shoes are too tight. Or maybe my head isn’t screwed on just right. But I think that the best reason of all, may be that my brain is two sizes too small. Whatever the reason is, I typed up this entry and I hope you enjoy it.

‘Twas the week before Christmas and all through Loudoun

Those darn Stone Bridge fans were still hootin’ and shoutin’.

They won the state ‘ship with Coach Mickey T.

And they still will not leave this poor blogger be.

But now its time for free throws and shots that go slap

And I’ll miss all the action if a take a long winter nap.

There’s also pins, backstrokes, and floor routines

That take place during this exciting winter sports scene.

I was watching the game Tuesday, when what to my eyes should appear

But a late fourth quarter rally, and then the sounds that I did hear:

“On Foley, On Mooo-labah, On Dufford, On Freeman,

On Smith, On Pennington, Hey-those refs are cheatin’”

We sprang to the lead, until the final whistle,

And up went the score like the down of a thistle.*

And finally, I’ll say this, as I gawk at our team’s might-

Happy Holidays to all, and let’s beat Heritage Friday night!

I should also mention that James Madison University may be getting a Christmas present because I have heard (unofficially) that Deric Dudinski may be returning to Virginia to play for the Dukes! Hopefully, this works out and we will see this former Park View star suit up in the purple and gold.

Well, I’ve gotta go and help my dad untangle Christmas lights. I hope everyone has a great time over the break and will be ready to take exams when we come back (ugh).

*Does anyone actually know what the heck the “down of a thistle” is?

Park View Hoops Preview

This is one hectic time of year. Mothers are getting trampled at Wal-Marts, LCPS will close down for 1/8 inch of snow, cable movie channels are showing marathons of A Christmas Story and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation every weekend and, most importantly, the men’s basketball team takes the floor for another exciting season! This season looks to be even more action-packed than last year’s. This past week I interviewed Coach Jeff Schneider who returns for his fourth year as head coach of the Park View Patriots.

SB: First off, many of the players are coming off of football season and have missed the first couple weeks of practice. As the coach, how have you gotten these players ready for the season?

JS: Fortunately, we have eight returning players. They are already familiar with the system that we like to run. Most of the newcomers were not on the football team this past fall and were able to get two weeks to get acclimated and learn some of the things that we like to do before the football players came out. We are also lucky to have hard working players who are determined to keep getting better.

SB: This team is blessed with a number of third-year varsity players. How will they impact the team this year?

JS: We have four players entering their third full season on the varsity team–Ryan Pick, Danny Foley, CJ Leizear, and Kenny Smith. First and foremost, we expect leadership out of these young men. They know what is expected of them and they know what it takes to succeed. These are huge benefits to our team. The each also know the role that they must play for the team to be successful. We can score in a lot of different ways using a lot of different players, but to be successful as a team, each must fulfil their role.

SB: What have the players done, either as individuals or as a team, over the offseason to get ready for the season?

JS: Most of the players played on our spring and summer league teams. Several of the players also participated in several individual camps around the area.

SB: Is there a player or players who many people may not know about who could have a big impact on the team this season?

JS: We have so many players who can step up and have a “big night” for us. I would guess that most people would be looking down low and Thomas Mulabah, but we have three other post players–Kenny Smith, Brock Pennington, and Brett Dufford–any of whom could start on probably any team in the district. Pennington –a 6’6″ senior transfer from Notre Dame Academy–is one newcomer that could have a big impact for us. We have several perimeter players that can score as well–Danny Foley, Marcus Freeman, CJ Leizear, and Ryan Pick. Sophomore Jordan Owens has impressed us early on with his shooting, hustle, and nose for the ball.

SB: Last year the team fell just short in several situations that kept the team from gaining a regional berth. What do you believe will have to happen this year to help them win these close games?

JS: A major focus for us this year has been “one more”. One more win would have earned us a regional birth. That win could have come from a tournament victory over Broad Run or one more key victory during the regular season. That one more win could have come with one more defensive stop, one more offensive rebound, one more made shot, one more loose ball gained, or one more of a lot of things. We will not let that one thing get in our way again. We have been focusing on the little things to make us more efficient on the offensive end by decreasing turnovers and getting higher percentage shots. Defensively, we need to maintain the team aspect of us versus you rather than me versus you.

SB: Finally, what will it take to get the team to go deep in the playoffs and make a run for states?

JS: The states? We just worry about getting better every day and playing together as a team. We are in a very balanced district where anybody can beat anybody else on any given night. Last year proved that. I don’t know if anyone can be seen as the pre-season favorite, but if we stay healthy and utilize our strong inside game to trigger our outside game, we should be pretty successful.

The team played earlier this week, defeating Manassas Park in their opener. Good luck to the basketball team this winter –let’s bring the district title back to Sterling Park, where it belongs!

One last thing, if anyone sees the LPS Monkey, please tell him to stop asking Santa for an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle-he’ll shoot his eye out!

A Look Back…

Well, it’s Friday night and I have no football game to go to. The Thanksgiving leftovers are all gone, many of the football players are involved in their winter sports, and the stadium is empty and silent. Although the Patriots’ season is over, this group of young men accomplished a lot this season. They earned a trip to the regional final, had many players on the Dulles District first- and second-teams, had the District Offensive Player of the Year, and the District, Region, and possibly AA State Defensive Player of the Year. They also beat every team in the district, compiled a 10-2 record, had the best passing game in the area, and had many record setting performances.

But beyond all the stats and accomplishments is the fact that for three months these players suited up with each other almost every day and were dedicated to the team and the game of football. They played their best and it showed and really, when all is said and done, it is not the titles won that defines a team but the struggles that the team played through and the lessons the players learned (although it would have been nice to have added some more hardware to our four already full trophy cases…).

So pat yourselves on the back guys, because you all achieved much this season and made the people of Sterling proud.

We also have a lot to look forward to next year. True, CJ Leizear and Thomas Mulabah are gone, but sophomore Tommy Sedeski, among the best underclassmen in the entire state, returns, as does RB Darius Beale, who showed flashes of brilliance at times this season. Josh Jones, Brandon Absher, and Kenny Smith all return and there are many other players not mentioned who are bound to play well next year.

Good luck to all the seniors in whatever they chose to do. It has been fun watching you guys and I hope the lessons learned on the gridiron carry over and help you all in your lives after high school.

*Coming soon: Winter sports preview

There Is No Joy In Ashburn

The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Broad Run eleven that day;

The score stood 6 to 10, with but one quarter more to play,

And then when the Spartans threw the football, seeking glory and fame

A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

And now the leather-covered football came hurtling through the air,

And the fans stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.

Close by the sturdy defensive back the ball unheeded sped-

And ‘twas flicked into the air, near Ryan Pick’s head.

From the benches, full of people, there went up a deafening roar,

Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore.

“He got it, he got it!” shouted someone as he raised his hands;

And it’s likely they’d a stormed if there wasn’t a fence in front of the stands.

Oh, somewhere in Sterling Park the sun is shining bright;

The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,

And somewhere a blogger is laughing, and somewhere Patriots fans shout;

But there is no joy in Ashburn—the mighty Spartans were put out. *

Congratulations to the Patriots who will be playing in the regional final next week. This team was able to pull themselves together and defeat the Spartans in one of the best high school football games I have ever witnessed. Also, congratulations to Broad Run. Turning a team completely around is no easy task and who knows-next year the two teams may again challenge each other for the district title.

Why We Will Win…

Don’t worry Patriots fans, we have another shot this week! In the large amount of spare time I seem to have, I came up with five good reasons why we will win this game:

5) Our offense will be more settled down and has seen how Broad Run’s spectacular defense operates. The Spartan defense seemed to let the Patriots make their own mistakes last Friday, and then capitalize on good field position. This week, however, the defense will need to put more pressure on the Patriots offense-something that has left receivers open all year for Park View.

4) Dropped passes were, in my opinion, the single biggest problem for the Patriots. The rain definitely had at least a little to do with that. Now, with forecasts calling for clearer weather and the offense more settled, the receivers should be able to perform better and come up with at least one big play or two.

3) Rocky Balboa came back in Rocky II to become the world champion. Rocky was known as the “Italian Stallion.” Stallions used to run free on the Great Plains. Minnesota is a state that lies next to the Great Plains. Coach Hill came to PV from Minnesota. Also, the man Rocky beat was Apollo Creed. Apollo is the name of a Roman god. The Roman Gods were borrowed from Greece. Spartans were the people of a city-state in Greece. What does all of this mean? Park View is destined to win!

2) There is no way seniors like Thomas Mulabah, CJ Leizear, David Revsbeck, Danny Foley, and many others will give anything less than 100%. They do not want this to be their final high school game and will be playing for all the marbles.

1) This is Sparta!? Everyone seems to forget than in the end the Spartans lost the Battle of Thermopylae! (Cole Shain even looks a little like King Leonidas…)

Side Note:Since Broad Run has adopted the saying “This is Sparta!” I proposed to some people that Park View fans should say “This is Lexington and Concord!” Needless to say, it didn’t go over to well…

Election Day Special!

Four score minus seventy-six days ago Park View once again showed that they are the team to beat in the Dulles District with a win over Heritage. Now the stage is set for the biggest game this season-Friday, November 9 at 7:30 at Broad Run. The winner gets the top seed in the region (Sherando, who has been in first most of the season, will most likely be bumped down, however I believe it is possible that they could retain the top seed depending on the outcomes of several other games) and the loser will get nothing. Well, that’s an overstatement, as both teams have already clinched a playoff birth, but it helps build the drama. C’mon, work with me here.

The traditional rivalry between these two schools has resumed and is as strong as ever. Last year Broad Run nearly upset the Patriots at home until the Patriots came out in the second half and took the lead behind Deric Dudinski’s outstanding offensive and defensive performance. Last year the two schools also faced each other in the district tournament basketball finals and both schools were at the top of the district for softball. Throughout the ‘80’s and ‘90’s the Broad Run-Park View rivalry was the biggest series of sports competitions in eastern Loudoun until five more schools were added to this area in the past ten years. However this rivalry has picked up in recent years and this game looks to be a classic.

On another note, listed below are all of the Park View athletes honored for their sportsmanship while participating in fall sports. Two players were chosen from each sport.

Cheer – Abby Gabriel, Courtney Suddueth

Cross Country – Angela Vongphakdy, Robert Stoepker

Golf – Steven Balik (what a guy), Trevor Scales

Football – Ryan Pick, Josh Jones

Volleyball – Caitlin Ward, Lisa Day

Athletic Training – Susan Geiger, Bethany Hansberger

You won’t see and of these kids using “the clear” or staging dog fights.

If there’s one vote you must make today it’s for the Game of the Week for Fox 5. Click on the link provided and vote for the PV vs. BR game so the whole metro area can see what this great rivalry and Loudoun sports are all about! Have a great week watching the final regular season games of the season and I hope to see many of you at Broad Run on Friday.

Patriots In Seventh Heaven, Looking To Be On Cloud Nine

Park View is in seventh heaven this week-putting up seven scores of seven(touchdowns) en route to a 49-21 victory over their cross-town rival Dominion High School. Behind a passing defense that allowed only one completion, and QB CJ Leizear, who threw for six touchdowns and over 400 yards, the team held the lead the whole game. It was also pretty awesome to see DE Thomas Mulabah return a blocked punt for a touchdown.

However, the team will face a much tougher opponent Friday as Heritage comes to Sterling Park. This Pride team has been described by some as the “hottest team around” and may be better than the team that shared the district title with the Patriots two seasons ago. Personally, I think that if we can limit the turnovers, there really is nothing that can stop Park View. We’ll see if the Friday the Patriots will be on Cloud Nine, sitting with a 9-0 record in first place in the district. Even though I’m making all these angelic references, the Patriots are having one **** of a season.

John of Leesburg comments on Nov. 2 @ 5:32 p.m.: “All im gunna say is everyone underrates heritage by alot and i defintly think theres gunna be an upset in sterling tonight.”

Homecoming In Sight; Other Teams Wrap-up Regular Season

I’ve come to two conclusions this week. First, I’ve got to find something more constructive to do with my time than sit through another episode of ABC’s series Cavemen. Second, there is so much going on right now in the world of Park View that my head is spinning! The volleyball team has several games left before districts, the cross-country and competitive cheer teams have districts next week, and the football team is in the midst of an undefeated season. All this, plus the fact that homecoming is this weekend-I’m lucky to have gotten an entry up!

Tonight the volleyball team plays Broad Run, a team that has only lost two games so far. The Patriots are coming off a close win over the Dominion and are looking in good shape to possibly keep this one close. I spoke recently with Coach Koscinski about how the volleyball team has performed up to this point.

Coach K believes that the team is improving and getting better every game. Even though the team has posted a better record than last year, she believes that the biggest marker for improvement has been the team’s ability to set and meet goals. She also looks at seniors Chrysa Matyuf and Megan Brown, who have both broken career records this year, as an example of the team’s continuous improvement. These records may not be the only ones to fall, as Coach Koscinski recognized the fact that several other girls are also close to setting records. She also credited the seniors on the team for getting thing going and taking care of the “extra things” that make them a team. She believes that if the team can stay focused, believe in each other, and realize they have what it takes, this team is one to watch out for.

The big headline this week, of course, is the football game vs. Briar Woods Friday and there are so many storylines involved. Coach Pierce is returning to his old team, this is the homecoming game for the Patriots, the Munro-King tandem vs. the Patriots “D” is sure to get some attention, and the fans are anxious to see what else Coach Hill has up his sleeve. Last year the Patriots rolled over thFalcons en route to a 9-1 season. This year, the Falcons are a much stronger and may be one of the toughest teams the Patriots play this year. There is so much drama I don’t even have to watch Days Of Our Lives this week!

Well, I gotta go and practice my dance moves, put on my tux (couldn’t get a hold of the **** & Dumber tux I wanted), and douse myself in my special cologne (It’s illegal in nine countries and made with bits of real panther, so you know it’s good). Have a great time at the game and the dance and be safe everyone!

*If you have no idea what I’m talking about right now I’ll have to personally take you over to Blockbuster for the 411 on poorly put together comedies…

Note: I apologize to Josh Jones of Park View for mistakenly naming him as “John Jones” in my last entry. You gotta love spell check…

Well, as the saying goes- there’s more than one way to skin a cat. I guess that means there’s also more than one way to beat a panther-as evidenced by PV win over Potomac Falls last night. It took a while for the offense to get going but, it really is something special to see them work when they get things going and work together. After falling behind the Panthers after a blocked punt for a touchdown, the Patriots set up one of the best drives I have ever witnessed in high school football. Complete with a trick bounce pass that set up the next play, a beautiful pass to Ryan Pick in the endzone, the Patriots came back for good. The Patriots then held the Panthers on the next series and John Jones picked off a pass to seal the victory. It was a little close for comfort, but in the end we came out with another victory. Next up- Briar Woods in our homecoming game.

The cross-country team plays today at the Glory Days invitational at Bull Run and with a full squad, they look to place better than they have in the last few meets. This is the team’s last meet before districts at Oatlands at the end of this month.

The volleyball team plays at Dominion on the 16th, looking to beat the Titans after Dominion defeated the Patriots at home last month in four sets. This one should be a tight game as both teams look ahead to districts.

That’s all I got for now. Look for a new entry coming out this week sometime. I was trying to get a special on the volleyball team this past week but a communication error between myself and the coach pushed it back. I’ll leave you all with a great patriot quote I found. While you may think the speaker is criticizing Americans for being ignorant, he is really describing me at the football games:

“Patriot: the person who can holler the loudest without knowing what he is hollering about.” -Mark Twain

September 30, 2007

It was close in the second quarter, with the Raiders knocking on the door, but with several key plays in the second half, and a defense that held off County, the Patriots ended up with a 25-point win over Loudoun County. After taking a three touchdown lead in the first quarter, the Patriots gave up three touchdowns to County, but were able to recover, thanks in part to a punt block and recovery for a touchdown by Eric Johnson. Although it was a little close for comfort, this win puts the Patriots at 4-0 and in first place in the Dulles District (even though they are tied with three other teams). QB CJ Leizear had a great game with 4 touchdown passes and no interceptions. Sophomore Tommy Sedeski (Deric’s little brother, for those of you who don’t know, however, I’m pretty sure that by the time he graduates he’ll be known as more than that) also played well, finding the endzone twice for Park View. RB Eric Johnson also played well, only carrying the ball several times but gaining around 10 yards per carry. The Patriots play against the Freedom Eagles next week at home.

Well, the golf season has ended and even though the Patriots had a less than spectacular showing at the District Tournament, they still ended up with a huge improvement over last year. This season marked a change of pace for the Patriots, who hadn’t won a game in four years. Our scores are all down, and with no seniors graduating this year, the whole team will be back next year. What made this season especially great was the win over Heritage that came last Thursday. Sophomore and #6 seed Joe Antonacci chipped in on the final hole of the match to par the hole and card a 45, which gave the Patriots a one stroke win over the Pride. Keep working in the offseason guys, and we can make a run next year!

In other sports news from Park View, the volleyball team defeated Briar Woods in three sets. Chrysta Matyuf broke the career record for digs, as you may know, and the team got its first district win.

Anyway, that’s all for this week, and I’ll try to get another blog entry up in a few days.

Date

Since I’m Not Busy…

Well, since PV’s football team has a bye week I thought I’d do something different, so, in honor of David Letterman, here are the top ten things I can do this Friday night with a freed up schedule:

10) Open up new windows under loudounprepsports.com and vote for Park View teams numerous times in the poll to ensure PV gets the most votes.

9) Give the LPS monkey a bath, probably the first he’s had in a long time. Hey, you’d start to sweat too if you had to hold up that red flag and dance around all day. (If I really wanted to be like Letterman, I’d have the monkey bathe himself and call it “Stupid Pet Trick”).

8) Get the LC Quarterback’s hair to put on a voodoo doll and stick pins into the arm so that we will have a leg up on the competition when we play them next week.

7) Be the one random kid in Valley’s “Jungle” wearing a PV letter jacket. I’ll be sure to get some jeers.

6) Think of bad puns to use for next week’s blog entry about the fact the both County’s and Park View’s coaches are named Hill. (Over the hill…Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill…the list is endless)

5) Forget the refrigerator line, I’ll prank call all other coaches in the district with this line: “Hey, is your quarterback runnin’…well you better go catch him because if he’s runnin’, Thomas Mulabah’s about to sack him.”

4) Sneak onto Lowes Island so I can get in some practice for golf districts next week.

3) Use the extra time to look in the yearbook for potential homecoming dates, get the phone book and call them up (after practicing the conversation in front of a mirror for an hour), and practice bustin’ some moves in my bedroom with the radio cranked up and a broom as my dance partner.

2) Take blog writing lessons at : www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page6724.cfm?forum=2033&forumtopicid=67534&mid=233013&show=comment&

And the number one thing I can and should do…

1) Complete some freakin’ homework! (gotta boost those scores for my interim reports)

PV Battles Rain to Handle the Judges

What do you get when you combine a West Virginia-bound QB, a pumped up Patriots football team, two of the best squads in the region, and miserable September weather? Another victory for the 3-0 Patriots!

Sophomore Tommy Sedeski got the game off to a start with a touchdown reception to put the Patriots up 7-0 early in the first quarter. However, the Judges were able to score two touchdowns off of turnovers to go up 13-7 (one of the extra-point attempts was blocked) and take the lead going into the half.

In the second half, the Patriots were able to get going again and outscored Handley 27-7. A fumble recovery by David Revsbeck got the team back on track and we held the lead for the rest of the game.

The defense looked good as constant pressure was applied to Handley QB J.J. Dorsey, and the “D” even held Handley’s offense even after some situations in which the Judges had good field position.

Also, for anyone out there wondering, Junior Kenny Smith will miss much of the rest of the season after a ‘freak accident’ caused him to injure his knee last week. I’ve heard he has had surgery and, if all goes well, could possible be back for the end of the season.

The rain also couldn’t stop our fans, who did a great job and were as loud as I have ever heard them. Let’s continue this and take the “Battlefield” up to Leesburg for out next game at Loudoun County.

Coming soon in The Minuteman: Midseason reports for fall teams.

Football Off to Great Start; Other Teams Also In Competition

So, the Herndon game was a blowout. 37-7 isn’t a bad way to start off a season. The offense had a great game, with RB Eric Johnson having over 100 total yards, including a great 50 yard run to get the game and the crowd going. The defense was also spectacular, with the first-string allowing no points. In fact, the Herndon offense was never once close to scoring until late in the game. If last year’s formula for success was “Deric,” this year’s formula could be “’D’ + Eric.”

That’s not to say the passing game was bad, though. Of course, C.J. set the school’s mark for career passing yards-in only the first game this season. TE Kenny Smith also had a number of receptions along with two TD’s. The WR’s didn’t have a spectacular game, but there were a few receptions deep. The running game and several passes scattered throughout were enough to keep the chains moving and the score rising.

This past week’s game, however, is what will put the Pats among the most talked about teams in the area. A 13 point win over Jefferson has shown that this team can succeed.

QB CJ Leizear played a pretty good game with 4 TD passes. Ryan Pick also has a great game-a few more games like that and an all-district selection wouldn’t be out of the question (Not to jinx him I just danced around a maypole on my left foot and tied a string around my cat’s tail). The “D” also played well and racked up four interceptions to limit the Cougars to 22 points.

Next week’s home game against Handley will be what really separates the men from the boys in the region. Two of the top teams will face each other at PV. A win here may temp me to use the “u-word” but I can’t jinx the team again (I think I sprained my left ankle from that maypole dance and the neighbors are reporting me to ASPCA).

In other competition, the volleyball team played County and lost to last year’s state runners-up. The team plays another tough opponent, Heritage, before heading to the JEB Stuart Tournament.

The cross country team also opened the season at the Chancellor Int. with Sean Scales and Kelly White leading their respective squads. On Wednesday, the team ran against PF and LC, as both the men’s and women’s teams came in third against two of the best teams in the district. Today, they travel to Great Meadows for some runnin’ in the mountains.

Finally, the golf team played BR on Thursday and ended up losing by ten to Broad Run. As a player, I can tell you that this match left a bitter taste in many of our mouths, as several of us believed that we didn’t play as well as we should have. Next week, the team travels to Lowes Island to play Dominion, who has had an up-and-down season. Last year, PV turned in their best score of the year at this course, and with the way things look, if the team can avoid the big holes, a win is a possibility.

Well, the pep rally Friday was fun, although the Jammin’ Juniors should have won…

Court will be in session for the game against the Handley Judges (sorry but I couldn’t resist) this Friday. Let’s pack the house and get the team pumped for a win.

Respect

Alright, so I don’t have huge bug-eyes and I’ve never danced on a golf course to Journey while a groundskeeper chases a gopher in the background-but I do feel like Rodney Dangerfield…I don’t get no respect at all. Specifically-we don’t get no respect at all.

I should clarify…

Ask almost anyone in the Loudoun football community about Park View this year, and the name Dudinski will be spoken. “Without Dudinski…” and “weak running game and secondary” will come up, as well as phrases like “one-man team” or “no shot this year.”

Sure, Deric was a great high school football player on both sides of the ball, but to say that PV isn’t still one of the best teams in the area is completely ridiculous.

Upon opening the current issue of Gameday Magazine I was very surprised by the editor’s picks for this season’s games. He has PV losing to Broad Run, Handley, and Potomac Falls. He even stated that “it is highly possible” that Briar Woods could beat Park View.

Now, I understand that all four of the above teams have good quarterbacks, especially Dorsey of Handley and Shain of Broad Run, and PV’s secondary may not have the players from last year, but what about the rest of the defense? Also, PV’s offense is as good or better than these teams. C.J. Leizear and the receivers can handle a shootout and the running game is still pretty good.

Then why does everyone think PV won’t be able to handle the pressure this year? Is it like rooting against the Yankees? This team is one of the strongest in the region and with some tough out-of-district play, the Patriots will be ready to take on any team in the Dulles District.

So look for the Patriots to be playing their hardest and show everyone on the field…and get some respect after all.

Upcoming Week’s Predictions

With all your back-to-school vocabulary!

If there’s one thing I can’t stand at this time of the year, it those outlandish back to school ads. Mini music videos of students dancing in the hallways in JCPenny’s clothing, backpack specials at Wal-Mart, and parents clad in cheerleading outfits chanting about the upcoming year-only to find that their kid’s have an Easy Button, have been polluting my television for too long!

This verbose blogger sure wishes he had an Easy Button to help him make predictions about this week’s games!

Since covering Park View athletics has made me more ubiquitous around PV’s campus, I feel that each team has been preparing for the beginning of the season and will look to do well.

Okay, enough of this superfluous writing, here are my predictions:

First, the football team will be taking on Herndon. After the scrimmage last week (in which no official score was kept) and months of lifting and preparing for the season, the Patriots will begin their season at home. As I have said in an earlier post, this game should be good, but not necessarily a blowout like last year. My prediction: Park View by 14.

Also, be sure to check out the Loudoun Extra section of the Post. There is a preview of all Loudoun and Fauquier football teams and a great article on Park View’s Thomas Mulabah.

Next, the golf team plays Broad Run at Algonkian. PV’s scores have been dropping there recently, as the team plays at that course several times per week. The last time the Spartans were there they shot a 330 over 18 holes and this upcoming 9-hole match looks like it will be closer. My prediction: Broad Run by several strokes.

The volleyball team plays at Jefferson (WV) on Wednesday. The team is much stronger than last year and will look to set the tone for the season with a win against this out-of-state team. Patriots by an average of 4 points per game.

Both cross-country teams will travel to the Chancellor Invitational on Saturday. After finishing 17th last year at the tournament, the teams will again run at this very large meet. Look for the Patriots to finish in the low-teens and improve on last year’s finish.

This fall sports season looks to get off to a great start and hopefully by the time it’s over, we’ll add some more “07’s” to the championship banners in the gym.

*Also, if you think a gimmick like using difficult vocabulary is in bad taste, be thankful I didn’t use my Jerome Bettis (The Bus) back-to-school joke. I can already see myself sitting alone at lunch…

Well, good luck to everyone this school year and I hope to see everyone at the game Friday.

As Summer Ends, PV’s Sports Begin

Well, I’m back again today which means two things: 1) Those cheer mom’s didn’t get me after all and; 2) I’ve stuck around longer than Billy Martin as the manager of the Yankees. (Although the LPS Monkey has been known to act like George Steinbrenner…)

Park View has seen some great competition since my last entry and nearly every team has been in at least one competition or scrimmage.

One such team, the golf team, has fared better than expected. After posting a 393 combined score at Raspberry Falls on Wednesday, the team shot a 368 against Potomac Falls the next day at Algonkian. Battling both storms and poor playing conditions, the two teams were neck-and-neck on the front nine holes. In fact, yours truly was leading all competitors through eight holes. On the back nine, however, the Park View players lost some of their steam. In the end, the Panthers escaped with the narrow win.

Up next is the Cheers Open on Monday, which the Patriots will host at Algonkian. All Dulles District teams will be in competition.

Another team, which had its first scrimmage today, is the volleyball team. After having a brief discussion with Coach Koscinski I found out several things about her opinions on the upcoming season. She believes that her nine seniors (several of whom have played on the varsity team since their sophomore season) will make up the heart of the team. Coach K also recognized the importance of leadership in the three captains; Megan Brown, Chrysa Matyuf, and Connie Oliver.

The team also worked hard over the off-season. Besides lifting and playing recreationally, many of the girls participated in a program at Dynamic Sports Performance under trainer Mark Nemish.

Coach Koscinski believes that the biggest obstacle for the girls this season will be themselves. She wants them to leave the gym knowing that they brought their best game. She believes that this mentality, as well as the team’s depth, will prepare them for tough games against schools like Loudoun County and Heritage.

I also spoke with Christina Holt, the new varsity cross-country coach who is “Really Excited!” about the season. She said that although she is new, she will run the team much like the team’s previous coach and is having the team run the same routes and workouts as last year.

The team members, who have been holding summer exercises of their own since June, are well prepared for the season. Coach Holt has also prepared the team by holding practices at “away” courses and getting the team focused on the goals for the season. With a lot of hard work put in over the off-season, and talented runners on both teams, success is just around the corner.

Well…School is just several days away and I still need to do my summer assignments! Pool time will be replaced with punctuation, tanning will become times tables, and instead of fairways I’ll have Family Life Education… and, NO, I don’t have a one-track mind…

By the way, as a Patriot (both a Park View student and supporter of our military) and a golfer I would like to remind anyone who plays golf on Sep. 1 to donate an extra dollar on their public course greens fees for Patriot Day, a program that offers aid to the children of fallen service members. The program looks to raise over $1 million and any donations will help the program reach its goa

Welcome to the The Minuteman blog

PV’s Fall Sports Expectations Higher Than Temperature

Well, folks … Here it is … The only blog dedicated to all things Park View athletics.

I will keep this blog updated periodically to give you the most accurate and current news and take you beyond the headlines to give you a look inside what’s happening in Sterling Park. Special thanks to Dan Sousa for allowing me to do this and extra special thanks to the 13-time state champion Patriots for making my job a whole lot easier.

First off this week is the football team of course. Coming off two straight district titles, the Patriots will look to “three-peat” (hopefully Phil Jackson won’t try to sue me for using his term) this season.

The Patriots have several things going for them. First, is the offense lead by QB C.J. Leizear. Leizear is coming off a solid junior season and looks to continue to find targets downfield like TE Kenny Smith and WRs Danny Foley and Ryan Pick. Eric Johnson is the probable starter at RB, with several other players probably getting time there as well.

On the “D” side of the ball, all-state athlete Thomas Mulabah will anchor one of the best lines in the state. Look for him to again set the standard for lineman in the state.

One thing the Patriots may need to work on is developing their younger players. A number of juniors and several sophomores should see a significant amount of playing time and early success may depend on them. View’s schedule opens Aug. 31 at home vs. Herndon. Now, Herndon may not be the powerhouse that other AAA Fairfax teams are, but they got whipped by PV last year, and with a better team this year, expect the score to be closer.

Park View’s first big game will be against Jefferson, WV on Sep. 7. Playing against a tough team that we only beat by a score of 21-12 last season will show where weaknesses (if any!!) exist. If we win this one, the team will be on par for the rest of the season as long as everyone remains healthy.

Speaking of par, PV’s golf team is already competing. After experiencing a tough loss vs. County, the Patriots played at the Mini-tournament held at Raspberry Falls where they shot a combined 393.

New coaches Larry Hinders and Mario Zangla have inherited a team with no wins over the last two years, but look to change that. Already, the Patriots have improved their scores from last year and a win is only a short way off. Trust me … the scores will continue to fall.

Special recognition goes out to freshman Jake Wilton for being the team’s low medalist in the first two competitions.

Other sports in action include volleyball, cross country, and cheerleading … Yes, I said it … I used “cheerleading” and “sport” in the same sentence. Go ahead and sue me (along with Phil).

The volleyball team lost senior captain Carolyn Bien, but several experienced seniors including Megan Brown, who set the school record for kills in a season, will return. Look for Coach K (no not that Coach K) to improve on last year’s fifth place regular season finish.

Cross-country took a hit from several graduating seniors, but returns several strong runners. The always colorful Sean Scales returns on the men’s side, and several other experienced seniors will also carry the team. On the women’s side, senior Kelly White and junior Lauren Rymer look to lead the young squad.

New coach Christina Holt has a good mix of both experienced and young runners, and it seems that they will do as good or better than last year.

As for cheerleading … well, maybe it’s not a sport, but if anyone knows about them feel free to shoot some info my way. Whew … that was a lot to type for my first entry but there’s a lot going on (and its only August!).

If you wish to give me the Pulitzer, call me an *****, or anything in between, just click on the comment link below.

Enjoy!

Editor’s note: Glad to have you blogging for LoudounPrepSports Steven! Now as for cheerleading as a sport … of course it is in Virginia. Competitive cheer is very serious in Loudoun … how serious? Well, Steven, if you see a mini-van headed your way with “Cheerleading IS a sport” bumper stickers … my advice is: run, Steven, run!

Nick of Sterling comments on Aug. 16 at 6:56 pm: “Their biggest early game of the year is going to be against Handley. Not some AAA out-of-state team.”

“An Old Cheer coach” comments on Aug. 16 at 6:23 pm:
” I am an avid reader of your site- Loudoun Prep Sports!!! No doubt about it.

However, your writer for the PV Blog needs clarification when he writes in his closing: ‘As for cheerleading … well, maybe it’s not a sport, but if anyone knows about them feel free to shoot some info my way. Whew . that was a lot to type for my first entry but there’s a lot going on (and its only August!).’

There is a significant difference between “sideline” and “competition” cheerleading. “Competition Cheerleading” is considered a SPORT by the Virginia High School League. Competition Cheerleading is quite different from sideline cheerleading. He needs to go to a competition to see what it is about before passing judgement in his blog. Give every athlete in Loudoun the benefit of working hard to reach their goals.

Wheeewwww, I feel better now. Thanks for hearing me out.”
