Check back on Monday for video highlights from the Potomac Falls-Briar Woods dual from the Super Quads
By Dan Sousa LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
Ashburn (Jan. 19, 2008) – The Potomac Falls High School wrestling team all but wrapped up its second straight undefeated Dulles District dual meet campaign by going undefeated Friday night at the district Super Quads.
The marathon night of action on four mats at Broad Run High School started at 4:30 p.m. and didn’t wrap up until 11:29 p.m.
Potomac Falls won all four of its matches to improve to 6-0 in the district in dual meets, clinching at least a share of the dual meet season title with just one match left. The Panthers defeated Briar Woods (3-1 Friday, 5-1 overall), Freedom (3-1, 4-2), Loudoun County (0-4, 0-6) and Heritage (3-1, 4-2) on Friday. The Briar Woods match, with a 33-25 final, was the closest affair for the Panthers.
“We knew it would be real close,” said Potomac Falls coach Rob Puterio. “They are a tough team. We knew it would be a brawl going in there.”
Zach Duffin started PF off with a fall in the third period over Ethan Ochs at heavyweight and the Panthers would not trail the rest of the evening.
Nine of the 14 matches went the distance with four matches decided by three points or less.
Heritage, which gave up forfeits at 135 and 171, had four wrestlers go undefeated: Justin Smith, Jimmy Jurado, Billy Wisman and Jon Vargas.
Freedom also had four wrestlers go undefeated: Chuong Le, Joseph Sheptock, Charles Constantino and Marshall Haas.

Titans Blow Past Broad Run to Remain Perfect in Dulles District
By Dan Sousa LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
Sterling (Jan. 15, 2009) – Wednesday’s Dulles District boys basketball game between Dominion and Broad Run figured to be a close afffair as the two teams played a thrilling holiday tournament game with the Spartans taking away a slim victory after Titan senior guard DeAndre Albritton’s buzzer beater rattled around and out. It was all Dominion Wednesday from start to finish and the Titans weren’t asking for refunds as they were perfectly happy to watch their team improve to 6-0 in district play.
Albritton almost had a double-double in the first half and finished with a game-high 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, in little over three quarters work. Greg Smucker had nine points alone in the third quarter and finished with 16 points for the Titans, who will host Briar Woods Friday to complete the first half of the district schedule. The game is a make-up from December.
The loss dropped Broad Run to 4-3 in district, three games behind Dominion in the loss column. It was more good news for Dominion Wednesday as Park View also suffered its third district defeat. Potomac Falls is two games back of the Titans, who have never won a district basketball title and have only secured a gymnastics title and two wrestling titles since the school opened in 2003.
Former legendary Loudoun Valley High Schooll boys coach Scott Douglas, father of Dominion coach Steve Douglas, said after the game Wednesday that this was about as good as he has seen the Titans play. Broad Run coach John Costello, who just about used up all his timeouts in the first half in an attempt to wake up his team as they 11-2 and trailed 26-10 by early in the second quarter, could only wonder how his team could have had its worst performance of the year after playing its best half in a comeback win over Potomac Falls Monday night.
The Spartans did not have a single player in double digits in the game as the Titan defense held junior Kevin McGaughey, averaging 16.5 points per game, to just nine.
It didn’t get any better for Broad Run after halftime as the Spartans trailed by 13, 33-20, and never got closer as Smucker and Albritton combined for 15 points to stretch the lead to 49-24 with three minutes still to play in the third.

Ashburn (Jan. 14, 2009) – Briar Woods High School celebrated Senior Night Tuesday night with a big win over a depleted Heritage team as the Falcons pinned the Pride with a 53-18 verdict in a AA Dulles District dual that figured to be much closer.
Heritage (1-1 in districdt) took the mat without starters at 171 (Kevin James out with ringworm), 189 (Jon Vargas with an ankle injury) and 285 (Gavin Hunt out with a shoulder injury) and that forced 215-pounder Josh Toney to wrestle up at 285. The Falcon quartet of Ryan Blackwell, Matt Quist, Mike Girolami and Ethan Ochs all registered pins in those weight classes including Quist thru Ochs to start off the match as Briar Woods (2-0) jumped out to an 18-0 advantage that grew to 33-0 until Heritage dented the scoreboard.
“Briar Woods was the more aggressive wrestling team tonight and they took it to us,” said Heritage coach Brian Hanselman.
Hanselman didn’t know if he would have a full squad for this Friday’s important Dulles District Super Quad at Broad Run High School. All eight district teams will be in action at once on four mats with the event starting as early as 4:30 p.m. Each team will wrestle four matches during the event, making up for more than half of the district portion of the season. See below for the schedule.
In other district wrestling action Tuesday, Freedom (1-1) jumped all over Loudoun County (0-2), winning 12 of 14 matches, for a 65-9 win. Disrict frontrunner Potomac Falls (2-0) defeated Park View (1-1), 63-12. Broad Run (0-1) and Dominion (0-1) also met on the mat.
The Falcons honored eight seniors before Tuesday’s match and all eight were in action with seven winning including T.J. Julia (forfeit), Thomas Hulcher (fall), Jared Beane (fall), Mike Fleming (decision), Blackwell (fall), Girolami and Ochs. Nik Abi-Najm also made it 8-for-8 but he lost a tough decision at 145 to the Pride’s Jimmy Jurado — who wrestled under the weather and needed one time out due to illness — who secured a 7-6 win in the final seconds with a 2-point near fall that wasn’t much longer than two seconds.
Briar Woods will have a chance to face district favorite Potomac Falls in the first round of Friday’s Super Quad.
