“Donnie started this season in a reserve roll and has earned more minutes based on his solid play in games.  Donnie is now a starter and is coming off to back to back 16 point performances against both Heritage and Potomac Falls.  Donnie is an excellent student and a positive presence in the lcoker room.  His teamates respect him and he always works hard.  From the beginning, I have called him our “glue guy.”  He just knows what neds to be down and fills in in that roll, keeping the team together and helping us move the basketball.  Another top performances include 10 pts against Loudoun County, so Donnie has closed out the month strong by averaging 12 pts. in the past 3 games.”

Wrestling: Region II Meet – Millbrook Takes Title

By Dan Sousas
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

Sterling (Feb. 15, 2009) – From the start of the finals at the Region II wrestling meet Saturday night at Park View High School, the Dulles District announced that this meet would be different than the previous year when the Dulles District didn’t capture any titles. With Tyler Anthony of Loudoun County and Denis Murray of Broad Run taking the mat at 103 pounds, at least one title was guaranteed and before the night was done Loudoun wrestlers had captured five titles.
Millbrook repeated as Region II team champion by a narrow 1.5 point margin, edging Northwestern District rival James Wood, 156.5 to 155. Another Northwestern team, Sherando, followed with 140 points and then Jefferson District’s Louisa with 110 points. Dulles teams placed fifth through eighth: Potomac Falls at 103, Briar Woods at 97.5, Heritage at 87 and Freedom at 70.5.
After Anthony defeated Murray, 7-4, at 103, Dulles took home titles at 112 (Stephen Penna of Park View), 125 (Justin Smith of Heritage), 135 (Sean Dunn of Heritage) and 145 (Ryan Hagen). Joseph Sheptock of Freedom placed runner-up at 145 as Dulles represented well in the lower weights but didn’t place anyone in the finals after Hagen’s dramatic victory.
Trailing 4-2 with 10 seconds to go in his match, Hagen was after to put his opponent, Josh Shaffer of James Wood, in a rarely used defensive move sometimes called a spladdle. Both wrestlers fought for control as the clock ticked down and it was uncertain if Hagen had gained control as Shaffer had an arm leverging Hagen, while Hagen was putting Shaffer towards his back. With less than five seconds to go, Shaffer lost his grip on Hagen’s leg and while time expried with Shaffer still ahead, the official awarded Hagen two points for a reverse and three points for a near fall for the incredible victory.
The JW coaching staff prostested the ruling but Hagen was left with his arm raised in the center circle.
Earlier, Penna had defeated Ryan Bonno of Millbrook, 12-3, to capture the 112 title. It was a bittersweet victory for Penna who earlier in the day had defeated the favorite in the weight class, Gage Swartz of James Wood, after Swartz had to default due to a horrific injury that delayed wrestling at the meet for nearly an hour. Swartz had to be taken by amubulance to Loudoun Hospital with a compound fracture of his elbow after putting his arm out to break a fall during the match.
After Penna won his finals match to the delight of the host Patriot fans, Heritage took home two titles with Justin Smith defeating Mark Thomas of James Wood, 5-0 at 125, and Sean Dunn dominated Randy Fisher of Louisa, 14-4, at 135.
Region II is considered a tough region to advance to states from and there were some surprises as Potomac Falls senior Paul Rowane failed to make his fourth straight state meet, finishing fifth in the loaded 125 pounds weight class. Also Heritage’s Jimmy Jurado failed to advance to states in the 145 weight class.
Briar Woods, despite not having any wrestlers in the finals, advances five to states, the same as Dulles District champion Potomac Falls. Heritage and Freedom will bring three wrestlers to Salem with Broad Run sending two and Loudoun County and Park View, one each.
Below is the top six in each weight class with the top four moving onto the AA state meet. Record during Region II meet for each wrestler is to the right of their school. See below the top six for a complete round-by-round look of the entire meet with every result.

VHSL A/AA State Gymnastics Qualifier

(Feb. 15, 2009) – Loudoun County High School senior Vicki Vesecky finished second in the All-ARound Saturday at the VHSL A/AA state qualifier Saturday at Harrisonburg High School to lead a group of 14 Loudoun girls who will move on to the state open meet.
Vesecky scored 36.425 to finish runner-up to All-Around champion Caitlyn Cook-Furr of Poquoson who captured the bars, beam and vault while scoring 37.4.
Vescecky’s teammate Jessica Drews also qualified in the All-Around with a fourth place finish at 35.275. Another Raider, Liz Asai just missed the cutoff for All-Around, taking fifth at 35.2.
The top eight in each event, in addition to the top four All-Around, will compete at Saturday’s VHSL state open which gets underway at 1:30 p.m. at West Potomac High School with awards slated for 6 p.m.
Vesecky finished runner-up on the bars (9.25), beam (9.025) and tied for second on the floor exercise (9.4).
Taylor Boyle of Orange, who finished third in the All-Around with an 36.1, captured the floor with a 9.5 routine.
There was no team competition as class A and AA do not have enough teams in the state to hold team championships. Individual gymnasts, however, can qualify to compete in the VHSL Open and 11 girls from Loudoun will join Vesecky and Drews including Asai, who was third on the beam (9.0), tied for sixth on the floor (9.05) and seventh on the bars (8.45). Another Raider, Jessie Sheehan qualified in the vault, beam and floor.
Others moving on from Loudoun include Allie Daczkowski (bars, vault, floor), Sarah Brown (bars), Emily Tatman (beam) and Lauren Smith (beam) all of Potomac Falls.
Freedom’s Alexis Chaet (bars and vault), Lauren McClure (bars) and Lilly Nguyen (vault) both qualified as did Park View’s Britany Zartman (beam) and Linda Poplawski (vault). Broad Run’s Crystal Nochese qualified on the beam.

Wrestling: Potomac Falls Repeats as Dulles District Champs

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
Leesburg (Feb. 9, 2009) – They may have turned off the lights Saturday night at Loudoun County High School to introduce the finalists for the AA Dulles District wrestling meet, but nobody was in the dark about whom the top team was as Potomac Falls, for the second straight year, wrapped up the team title before the finals even started.
Individually, two seniors added to already sparkling careers as Justin Smith of Heritage became a rare 4-time district champion (103 in 2006, 112 in 2007, 119 in 2008 and 125 this year) and T.J. Julia of Briar Woods claimed his third straight title (103 in 2007, 112 in 2008 and this year). Smith claimed a 7-3 feisty decision over Panther senior Paul Rowane who himself was looking for his third title after winning at 112 in 2006 and 119 in 2007. Julia, meanwhile, edged Park View senior Stephen Penna, 5-3, in another marque match-up.
Perhaps the only thing to rain on the Panthers purple parade was taking just three of the eight finals they appeared in, but otherwise, it was all peachy for PFalls with 195 team points, a sixth district title since 2002, and 11 wrestlers through to this week’s Region II meet which starts Friday at Park View and winds up Saturday.
Briar Woods maximized its efforts in the finals with five individual titles in six championship bouts to slide into second place with 153.5 points, just ahead of Heritage (146.5 points) which crowned the same number of champions as PF, three. Freedom finished fourth with 132.5 points and sent five to the finals with junior Joseph Sheptock claiming the Eagles first ever individual champion with a 5-2 win over Pride senior Jimmy Jurado, the returning champion from 140.
The Pride, fighting injuries and illness much of the season, are sending 10 to regionals, two more than Briar Woods (8) and Freedom (7).
Host Loudoun County, which ran a spectacular, first-class meet which was officially sponsored DigitalSports.com, claimed two champions and will send six to Park View. Park View didn’t have any indiviudal champions but had two in the finals and will have five wrestlers on their home mats this coming weekend. While both Broad Run and Dominion didn’t have any wrestlers in the spotlight Saturday in the finals, they will be represented at regionals with the Titans sending five and the Spartans four.
Four wrestlers claimed their second district titles: Thomas Hulcher of Briar Woods at 125, Ryan Hagen of Potomac Falls at 152, Remington LaKose of Loudoun County at 189 and Ethan Ochs of Briar Woods at 285. Hagen and Mike Girolami of Briar Woods were not only the only wrestlers to record a fall in the finals, but they pinned their way through the bracket. Hagen pinned Jared Beane of Briar Woods in 3:08 and Girolami pinned Roy Stephens of Park View in 1:31 in the 215 finals. Hagen was on the mats for just over eight minutes Saturday and Girolami needed just 7:15 total to dispatch three opponents.
Hulcher, LaKose and Ochs had a much harder time repeating their titles. Hulcher survived two points for stalling in the final period to edge Ryan Snead of Potomac Falls, who had won at 130 last year. LaKose had an even closer match as he trailed Freedom’s Marshall Haas 4-3 with 12 seconds remaining in the match after Haas, trailed 3-1 had escaped and then took LaKose down, wrappinig up the two points  just as the wrestlers inched out of the circle. Haas then needed to ride LaKose out as both of the clearly weary wrestlers reset in the center of the mat. Lakose was able to elevate his base and when Haas lost his grip on LaKose, the Raider was able to reverse to go ahead as he slipped Haas into a 3-point near fall with just seconds to go to win 8-4.
Ochs wrapped the night up by shutting down the talented Zach Duffin of Potomac Falls, 3-0, thus avenging a loss to Duffin by fall at the district super quads in January.
Other champions crowned Saturday included Loudoun County’s Tyler Anthony at 103, with a 7-3 win over Nick Rea of Potomac Falls; Jo Jo Koenig of Potomac Falls with a 13-2 major decision over Chuong Le of Freedom at 119; Heritage’s Sean Dunn, seeded fifth, at 135 with a 19-7 major decision over Michael Oswald of Potomac Falls; Potomac Falls 140-pounder Charlie Haislip who won an 18-6 major decision over Mike Surowiec of Freedom; Mike Fleming of Briar Woods at 160 with a 7-2 decision over Robert Giffin of Loudoun County; Heritage’s Kevin James, the lowest seed, at No. 6, to win Saturday with an 8-3 win over Freedom’s Charles Constantino.
Haisilip went in the books with fastest pin of the meet, coming away with a 22-second fall on his way to the finals.
