Cheer: SB to Host DigitalSports Spirit Bowl Saturday

**See below for video interviews from Stone Bridge cheer**

Ashburn (Sept. 19, 2008) – Three-time Virginia High School League state competitive cheer champion Stone Bridge High School will host Saturday the first annual DigitalSports Spirit Bowl.

The 11-team event features six teams from Loudoun (Broad Run, Freedom, Heritage, Loudoun County, Park View and host SB), two AAA Norther Region squads (McLean, Woodson), AAA two Northwest Region squads (Fauquier, Liberty) and AA Spotswood.

Host Stone Bridge, under first-year coach Nick Marchio — a former Bulldog cheerleader and three-year captain of the Virginia Tech squad — has captured state titles in 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07. The Bulldogs were fourth in the AAA state tournament last year and have been a top five finisher in the state for seven consecutive seasons.

Saturday’s even is $5 per person with doors opening at noon and the first team competing at 1 p.m. The teams will compete in two divisions (Navy Blue and Silver). Awards will be presented around 3 p.m.

Marchio said that the talent runs so deep in the Ashburn area for competitive cheer that girls that don’t make the Stone Bridge program would be able to make varsity programs elsewhere.

“We had to cut 10 really good cheerleaders from the program this year,” said Marchio.

While Marchio says he has some “very, very big shoes to fill” … those shoes won’t be far away as former Stone Bridge cheer coach Joe Dolansky, Marchio’s mentor and the coach who led SB to the three state titles, is a volunteer assistant for the Bulldogs this season.

Marchio says that the skills and routines have improved dramatically since his days at Stone Bridge.

The Bulldogs won a state title in football in 2007 and SB cheer co-captains Sierra Ellis and Megan Knodell says there is a friendly rivalry at the school between the cheerleaders and football players. The football players claim they make the cheerleaders better as the cheer squad does a push-up for every point on the scoreboard after each Bulldog touchdown. With Stone Bridge averaging 51 points a game … that is a lot of push-ups.

For most of the schools, Saturday’s competition is a chance to work on elements of routines that will be unveiled come disrict and regional competition time.

“Heritage is very excited about the season. We’ve been working hard on our routine since early August,” said Heritage coach Whitney Loy. “Although we’ve had a few injuries and we’re not quite as prepared as we’d like to be for the Stone Bridge cheer competition this Saturday, we expect to be in great shape for the (Dulles) District competition this year in October.”

Another squad competing Saturday is Loudoun County coach Robin Ellison says that the Raiders are “exceeding (her) expectations so far.”

“We have several veteran members of the squad who are exhibiting great leadership skills and who have set the challenge to the team to win Districts this year!,” said Ellison. “The girls are focused and determined and the competition routine looks great. The LCHS squad is committed to the time and hard work that it takes to be a championship squad.”

The Raiders were third in the Dulles District in 2007 with Broad Run, also at Saturday’s competition, the district champion and AA state runner-up.

Volleyball: Top 5 Poll Plus Tuesday Round-up

 LoudounPrepSports.com Volleyball Top 5 Poll
Sept. 18, 2008

1. Loudoun County (9-0)
The Skinny: Raiders have won 37 straight and 55 of 56. LC was tested with a five set match last Saturday at the Surebet Tournament at Stone Bridge. MB Shaylin O’Connell comes through big when the Raiders need her most.

2. Loudoun Valley (6-1)
The Skinny: Vikes survived thrilling Cedar Run District 5-setter on Tuesday at Osbourn Park. Can you dig this? Vike had three players combine for 73 digs in the match: Kristen Martin 36, Taylor Maddox 20 and Morgan Clark 17.

3. Heritage (12-1-1)
The Skinny: Pride almost took a detour on their way to a match-up next week with rival LC … but survived 5-set match with Briar Woods. Hitter Lian Bernett is quietly having a top-notch season.

4. Broad Run (4-4-1)
The Skinny: Should the Spartans be ranked ahead of Potomac Falls? That question will be answered tonight in Ashburn. Kristen Burt fired eight aces in straight set win over Park View Tuesday.

5. Potomac Falls (8-2)
The Skinny: Should the Panthers be ranked ahead of Broad Run? That is the question that will be answered tonight in Ashbur. Hey, we are repeating ourselves. We hear the only thing hotter than Potomac Falls at the Little Giants Tournament last weekend was the Panther volleyball team … OK, we stole that from a local Waynesboro newspaper!

On the bubble: Stone Bridge, Briar Woods, Dominion

*records do include tournament play, some of which are two set affairs.

———————————————
Thursday Sept. 18 Preview (all matches start apx. 20 minutes after finish of 6 p.m. JV match)

AA Dulles District (district records)

Park View (0-5) @ Briar Woods (2-3)
The Skinny: Falcons gained confidence from taking Heritage to five but LC was too much on Tuesday. Pats looking for first district win. BW looking to reach .500 in Dulles.

Potomac Falls (3-2) @ Broad Run (3-2)
The Skinny: Winner of this marquee match-up gets third place in the district race and the loser will sit in that dreaded (as in facing the district champion in the semifinals come tournament time) fourth place spot. Still a lot of volleyball to be played but it is never too early to make a statement.

Dominion (2-3) @ Heritage (5-0)
The Skinny: Pride can’t not afford to look forward to a match-up next Tuesday with undefeated neighbor Loudoun County because the Titans have the talent to pull off an upset.

Loudoun County (5-0) @ Freedom (0-5)
The Skinny: New Eagle coach Dave Tsuda will look little victories tonight when his squad goes up against unbeaten Raiders.

Volleyball Terminology:

You Pick’Em: Up “Dawson’s Creek” … With a Pick!

LV Grad Greg Dawson “Creek” Earns Second “You Pick’Em” Win

(Sept. 18) – OK, we tried to in vain to work Dawson’s Creek into the headline since Greg Dawson won our “You Pick’Em” contest last week … the LPS Monkey suggested: Greg Dawson “Up a Creek without a Paddle” but then that made no sense. As Dawson did quite swimmingly last week!

(Question: Dan, speaking of making no sense, what gives with all the funky colors on this page? Answer: We thought we would get as creative as possible and see if our new DigitalSports bosses noticed!)

Back to what counts! Dawson, a Loudoun Valley grad for the record, picked Potomac Falls 29-17 over Jefferson WV and the final was 31-14. Walter McCowat (Super Dominion Dad! and known at LPS World Headquarters as LPS Fan No. 1) just missed with a 31-21 pick. We should note that Jason “The Oracle” Treon didn’t win last week but he did email seven days ago that AIG would be bailed out by the government! Treon’s new license plates by the way read: Oracle1 (we kid … especially since Treon could easily beat us up and step on our little video camera)

Week 4 You Pick’EM

AAA Rivarly Game

Stone Bridge at Loudoun Valley

You Pick’Em Has Gone to the ‘Dawgs: Stone Bridge Coaches Sam Plank and Jason “The Oracle” Treon Both are Winners in Week Two
By Dan “Back to School Night” Sousa

(Sept. 11, 2008) – Hey, it was either update You Pick’em or attend Back to School Night (zzzzzzzzzzzzz …) sorry about that but after a decade or so those events all start to sound the same. I fell asleep at my son’s Back to School Night last year and had this strange dream that I was back in high school and dating somebody named Sally Foster.

And speaking of sounding the same … how about Jason “The Oracle” Treon who returns to You Pick’Em to claim his ninth all-time victory. Since Chris Tully achieved his sixth win last week, we expect Treon wanted to get down to business to assure his claim on the all-time leaderboard. Treon had Handley beating LC, 28-21 which was close enough to the 49-21 final. (People, people, you took a beating on this one … thank goodness we are not wagering on these predictions!).

Now Treon is a Stone Bridge assistant football coach and a JV baseball coach for the Bulldogs and his “boss” Sam Plank called the Stone Bridge game to gain his first victory ever in You Pick’Em … Plank had 42-7 ‘Dawgs and it was 49-7.

Treon has also made these predictions: Gas will reach $15 a gallon by Christmas, bow ties will make a comeback and we will have a mild winter (OK … we actually made those up).

(What was it with all the scoring last Friday! It was like the Arena League took over the Prep Football scene. We aren’t positive but we heard that Potomac Falls actually scored a final touchdown while the bus was pulling out of the parking lot in Hedgesville.)

(Somebody explain all of these asides?!?)

Week 3 Game of the Week for You Pick’Em: Jefferson WV @ Potomac Falls.

Send us your winner and final score to email::dsousa@digitalsports.com.

If you win, you get to claim bragging rights … and, yes, to answer your question, more than just local coaches are allowed to play but we warn you, they play to win. Also, if you win this week, the LPS Monkey will buy you a cup of coffee!

Tell your friends … more fun than Back to School Night … Play You Pick’EM

Six-Shooter Tully Almost Exact with Win! Hawes Breaks Through and Now is Tied with His Son in You Pick’Em

By Dan Sousa
You Pick’Em Professional

(Sept. 4, 2008) – Panther Power! Potmac Falls swept our first week of You Pick’em … now that has to be a throwdown challenge to the other nine Loudoun schools! First, here are our Week Two You Pick’Em Games:

Robinson at Stone Bridge
Skinny: Are the ‘Dawgs Ram-Tough this Season?

Handley at Loudoun County
Skinny: Are the Raiders for real … maybe Handley will be the “Judge”.

Email the winner and final score of one or both games to dsousa@digitalsports.com. It is that simple. Easier than picking a Vice Presidential candidate!

Week One Recap
Jeff Hawes finally notched his first You Pick’Em victory, calling Stone Bridge 34-24 over West Springfield, which was good enough to beat out his Assistant AD Chris Tully who had 49-21 and long-time You Pick’Em player Bob Buckman, who had 35-21. Hawes darn near won the Briar Woods game but Tully was almost exactly on the money, calling 27-14 Briar Woods over Millbrook when the final was 27-13. It won’t make Tully feel any better that the Pioneer missed extra point actually doinked (is that a word?) off the right upright! This make Tully a six-time winner in You Pick’Em, tying him with John Koren for second All-time and putting him within two wins of Stone Bridge assistant football coach Jason “crystal ball” Treon.

As for Hawes, we don’t want him to get too big of a head with his win … after all, he has now simply tied his young son Hayden for bragging rights in You Pick’Em as Hayden won last season.

Now email your pick here: dsousa@digitalsports.com.
————————————————-
(Aug. 28, 2008) – Well … we tried to **** this contest but we figured the outrage would be too great!

So, back by popular demand (yes, Sam Plank, we are talking about you!) is our You Pick’Em Football Contest.

Time out Dan: I won You Pick’Em last year and the jazzy LPS Prize Van never visited me!
Answer: Ha! You simply weren’t home and the LPS Monkey did toss your prize on your front lawn while cruising by at 45 miles per hour and we can’t be sure but we think your neighbor’s toy poodle took off with the gear.

(Honest, we just never got around to handing out the prizes and our coolest t-shirts were gone after the 2006 campaign and the new stuff was frankly … a bit lame! So, you will have to live with the sole prize of becoming famous in our little sports community … Gthat and if you like, the LPS Monkey will trim your hedges if you ask nicely).

OK, enough with that … here is how you play You Pick’em. Pick the winner of one of the following two games and give us the final score. If you get the winner and come closest to the final scores … well, you are the winner! We are working on forms for this new site so you will have to email all picks to dsousa@digitalsports.com.

Week One You Pick’Em
Game 1: West Springfield at Stone Bridge
Game 2: Millbrook at Briar Woods

Please send picks to Dan at dsousa@digitalsports.com.

Good luck!

Volleyball: Raiders Make it 33 Straight with Win Over BR

**Video available below**
**
Click here for a photo gallery from the LC-BR match**

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

Ashburn (Sept. 12, 2008) – Can a team rolling along to its 33rd straight victory really be in a rebuilding mode?

When it comes to the Loudoun County High School volleyball team, call it “touch-up mode” as the Raiders are working with a whole lot of talent but are also still fitting together the pieces for what appears to be another AA state playoff run after winning the title in 2007 and finishing runner-up in 2006.

Make no mistake, the Raiders are led by senior Shaylin O’Connell, who had 16 kills in Thursday’s 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 25-20) victory over Broad Run and LC got strong performances from such seniors as Katie Gloe (9 kills, 11 digs), Rochelle Latka (5 kills, 3 digs), Katie Martin (7 assists, 7 points) and Kerry Sarver (7 assists, 3 digs). But the Raiders are also at times a  young team with sophomore Rachel Arigo (5 kills, 5 blocks, 7 aces, 14 points) displaying an increasingly tough-to-return service game, sophomore Kathleen Horvath (12 digs) settling into the Libero role, junior Emily Vandegrift (4 kills, 5 digs) taking advantage of her time at the net, junior Juliane Hanna (9 kills, 8 digs, 9 points), a season away from the district’s Player of the Year contender, and junior transfer Robin Marsala (26 assists, 7 digs, 5 points), unleashing a jump set that teammates are still learning to hit to.

Basically, if you don’t get to the Raiders in 2008, watch out for 2009.

With only one senior starting, Broad Run expects to be right there with LC next year as well, but the Spartans are trying to get back into that regional bid spot in the district, having dropped three contests to Dulles teams within a week, including two matches to Heritage.

BR is also quickly improving with freshman Mallory Brickered registering 12 kills and four blocks against the Raiders and junior Elisa Scudder finishing with nine kills, five digs, two blocks and an ace. Missing from last year’s Spartan team that made it to regionals is a service game that nets easy points as BR was able to put down just two aces Thursday.

The Spartans lone senior starter, Kristen Burt, finished with 17 assists, two blocks, five digs, 14 points and one ace. Defensively for BR, Carolyn Pearce (21 digs) and Lizzie Dean (18 digs) combined for 39 digs and also added seven kills.

It was Arigo’s serving that put some distance between LC and BR in the second game as she took a 11-9 advantage and turned it into a 16-9 lead before giving up the ball. O’Connell was more than happy to patrol the net and put back any stray passes that didn’t find Burt.

Broad Run prevented the sweep by jumping out to a quick 7-2 lead in the third set and the Spartans never trailed as made it 2-1. Brickerd and Scudder were both on during this set.

The fourth set was back-and-forth early but then the Spartans had a run of unforced errors and the Raiders are just too good of a team to help out.

Tied at 15-15, Latka put the Raiders ahead but Scudder brought back BR to a 17-17 tie with a ****. O’Connell put LC ahead and again Scudder brought her team back to make it 18-18. When Scudder tooled the block on the next point, BR was up 19-18 but it would be the Spartans last lead of the evening.

Hanna tied it with a kills on the outside and then the Spartans had four errors in a row (a wide attack, a long attack, a two-hit violation and a net violation). Even when LC gave back a point with an error of its own at 23-20, BR followed with a service error and LC won the next rally to close the match.

Thurs. Sept. 11 Volleyball Scoreboard
Loudoun County 3, Broad Run 1
Raiders move to 4-0 in district with 25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 25-20 win. Broad Run is 2-2.

Heritage 3, Briar Woods 2
Falcons almost pull off shocker but Pride advances to 4-0 in distrirct with 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 15-8 win. BW is 2-2.

The thing about a potential Sept. 23 match-up with LC is that the Pride must make its through its schedule leading up to that.  BW gave Heritage a run for its money Thursday in a match that Falcon coach Rich Bennett said was the “most exciting volleyball they had experienced since the inception of the school — in its fourth year.”

Pride’s freshman setter Stephanie Yokoyama tallied 46 assists and has over 300 assists already on the season. She also had 16 service points in the five set win. One of Yokoyama’s favorite targets was Lian Bernett, who had 19 kills and six service points. Also for Heritage: Emma LeMaitre had 25 digs and 14 kills, Megan Beckwith had 26 digs and Calleigh Fangmeyer had 13 service points and 14 digs.

Reported Bennett: “There was a lot of net play and we had the upper hand in blocking them with 12 total blocks. They surely had more total spikes. Some great volleyball – we are capable of hanging with the top teams.

BW was down 2-0 when they fought back for a 25-23 win in set three. Despite being down 9-4 the fourth set, BW fought back. First with a time out and call for a set to Kim Bell, which worked. The Falcons then scored three more straight points to come within 9-7. BW, led by Bell with five kills, a block and three aces in the set, outscored Heritage the rest of the way to complete the 22-12 run and send things into a fifth set.

Krysta Gardner had three kills for BW in the fifth set but Bennett said his team coudn’t get the ball to Bell, who had one **** in the fifth. It was tied at 2-2 before Heritage slowly pulled away, capped by a 4 service-point run at the end of the game by Yokoyama.

For the match for BW: 11 kills and 3 blocks each for Krysta Gardner and Kim Bell; Gardner also led the team with 5 digs and Bell had 7 service aces; 5 kills and 4 blocks for MH Bailey Jensen; and Caitlin Ronan – 28 assists, 2 kills , 1 service ace

Potomac Falls 3, Freedom 0
Panthers make it two straight in district to move to 2-2 with 25-17, 25-20, 25-14 win. Freedom is 0-4.

The Panthers moved to .500 in district with the sweep. For PF:

Tori Janowski had 7 kills, 12 aces with 17 service points, 6 digs, 18 assists and 1 block
Cat Jones had 8 kills, 5 digs, 1 ace and 9 service points, and 3 blocks
Nicole Fauteux had 3 kills, 7 assists, 2 digs, 3 aces and 5 service points
Sara Hibson had 2 kills, 4 digs and 2 blocks
Annie Reck had 2 kills, and 1 assit
Alexa Campbell had 2 kills, 7 digs, 1 ace and 4 service points
Kate Colfelt had 1 ****, 1 ace and 6 service points
Emma Ukleja had 2 blocks and 1 ****
Kerry Dwyer had 1 ****, 4 digs 1 ace and 3 service points
Katie Shiraishi had 6 digs, 1 ace and 1 service point

Reports Freedom coach Dave Tsuda: “There was no doubt the Eagle team fighting spirit was highly energized from the first point of the first game through the last whistle of the last game. The Eagles defense rose on several occasions to meet the strong Panther team attack.  In each game, the contributions of tough digs and sprawling saves were well dispersed across the Eagle defensive specialists. The Eagles offense developed its own rhythm in game 2 as evidenced by the close score.  The Eagles executed a mix of hard spikes and smartly placed soft shots to keep the Panther defense guessing.”

Dominion 3, Park View 1
Titans move to 2-2 in districict with 25-16, 14-25, 25-11, 25-14 win. PV is 0-4.

Dominion moved to .500 with Lauren Wong leading the way with 11 kills, two aces and six digs.

Also for the Titans: Erin Davenport had five kills and three blocks; Cassie Glosner had four kills and six aces; Stephanie Lummis had four kills; Kristina Brown had three kills; and Alaina Sisson had 18 assists.

Volleyball: Top 5 Poll, Tuesday Round-up & Thursday Preview

LoudounPrepSports.com Volleyball Top 5 Poll
Sept. 11, 2008

1. Loudoun County (4-0)
The Skinny: Raiders have won 31 straight and have enough talent to make a run at a second straight AA state title. Currently ranked No. 2 in DC Metro area by a large newspaer (we kid, it’s the WashPost, like you didn’t know!). If Raiders wanted, they could go to a 3-setter line-up with the addition of Robin Marsala to the talented duo of Katie Martin and Kerry Sarver. LPS Monkey says: “Raiders are certainly “setting” pretty.”

2. Loudoun Valley (4-1)
The Skinny: Vikes only loss on the season was a Cedar Run defeat at Fauquier. Is it just us or does Morgan Clark look like she plays at about 6-foot-5 at the net. Most of Valley’s Cedar Run District season will be spent on the bus in traffic trying to get from Gainesville to Manassas!

3. Heritage (3-0)
The Skinny: Pride have defeated Broad Run twice already and their only defeat came to AAA Herndon. Pride certainly went under our radar in the preseason preview but anybody overlooking Heritage now will take a direct hit. Freshman setter Stephanie Yokoyama is certainly on her way to setting all sorts of school assists records.

4. Broad Run (2-1)
The Skinny: Spartans extended Heritage to five sets Tuesday. Key match tonight against Raiders. BR playing a well-crafted game under new coach Ellen Roberts. Keep an eye out for Mallory Brickerd … nine blocks on Tuesday. Talk about your “Brickerd Walls”.

5. Stone Bridge (1-3)
The Skinny: The Bulldogs seem to win just about every first set. SB has taken at least a game in loses to strong AAA teams Valley, Robinson and Herndon. We expect them to be in the Liberty District title hunt once again come Oct. All-Region setter Lily Vera returning to 100 percent will certainly help the ‘Dawgs.

On the bubble: Potomac Falls (3-2)

*records do not include tournament play, some of which are two set affairs.

———————————————
Thursday Sept. 11 Preview (all matches start apx. 20 minutes after finish of 6 p.m. JV match)

AA Dulles District
Briar Woods @ Heritage
The Skinny: After slow start, Falcons are playing much better and now they face a red-hot Pride team.

Freedom @ Potomac Falls
The Skinny: Panthers are money playing in the Panther Pit.

Loudoun County @ Broad Run
The Skinny: Last year’s big rivalry returns though many of the biggest names (Petkovich! M. Hanna!, L. Sears!, Bauernfeind!) have moved onto college volleyball. BR will try and prevent County from running its winning streak to “32-Skidoo”

Park View @ Dominion
The Skinny: Titans took a game from LC on Tuesday and we take that as a sign that Cam Meyer has his team playing togetgher.

——————————————
Volleyball Terminology:
LPS is using the term “sets” to refer to the best of 5 series teams play to determine a winner. Olympic volleyball uses “sets” instead of “games” to refer the series and NCAA in 2008 has also moved officially from “game” to “set”. To make matters more confusing, NCAA will now refer to “matches” as “games”. Got that! In high schol and college volleyball. The first four sets are played to 25 points (win by two) and the fifth set, if needed, is played to 15 (again, win by two). All scoring is rally scoring (not sideout scoring like when LPS Editor Dan Sousa had more hair and less stomach) which means a team can score both while serving and receiving.

Park View High School blog updated: Sept. 10

The Minuteman by Steven

About: Steven is a senior at Park View High School where he is on the golf and lacrosse teams. Give this Patriot a minute and he will give you the latest on Park View athletics.

Sept. 10 Post
The busses are running again, Starbucks’ are full of teenagers looking to wake up before yet another day of classes, and my backpack weighs about 25 pounds already. Everything is business as usual…except the Patriots are off to an 0-2 start after dropping a heartbreaker to the Jefferson (WV) Cougars.

Neither the new Bermuda grass field nor the debut of Patriot Nation, Park View’s official student section, could bring our team a victory in a rain soaked contest that went into overtime. The Patriots gave up a 36-22 lead late in the game as the rain picked up, and boy did it come down. After tying the game near the end of regulation, Park View had one more chance to march downfield for a victory, but unable to complete long passes, they were stopped short, falling 42-36.

The first two games can tell a lot about a team. In Park View’s first match-up against the Herndon Hornets, sloppy play and poor judgment by some players led to a loss to a team that did not play exceptionally well. We did improve a great deal on Friday; the offense clicked together on more than a few plays, and a kickoff return for a touchdown by Josh Jones turned the momentum in favor of Park View early on after a Cougar touchdown. The defense also played better, though there were several gaps in coverage that lead to big gains by the opponents. All in all, though we lost the first two games, we are not in that bad of a position. There is still a long time before district play opens up, and I’m sure everyone knows Coach Andy Hill will be able to iron out some of the weaknesses this team has shown and get the Patriots in the hunt for a district title. Oh yeah, and receiver Tommy Sedeski has been out and won’t return for several weeks, but when he returns, defenses around the district will have one more threat to deal with.

Is Park View in a bad position at 0-2? Not really. Are there many correctable problems that will be worked out in the coming weeks? Of course. And can we expect to see a number of “W’s” next to Park View in the standings column of the local newspaper? You better believe it.

Volleyball: Potomac 3, Park View 0

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Manager

While each game had the same outcome, the way the Potomac Panthers girls volleyball team beat Park View in each of the three games couldn’t have been more different. From a blowout, to a come-from-behind victory, to a squeaker at the end – the Panthers ran the gamut of different ways to earn a win in their 3-0 sweep of the Patriots.

The Panthers’ first game against the Patriots was no contest. Potomac jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the game and never looked back, winning by 15 points, 25-10.

It was the second game, according to head coach Audrey Shutte, however, that truly showed that Panthers’ resolve as a team. Behind for the majority of the game and by as many as four points late, the Panthers came roaring back, taking a 23-22 lead and closing out the game, 26-24.

“We need to always play one through 25 and be aggressive the entire time. They pulled it out at the end and that is really all the matters,” said Shutte, whose team led 10-9, before dropping seven of the next eight points to trail 16-11 midway through the game. “It showed their intensity and if they work together as a team, they can really come from behind and win strong. We have been working on that. I am really proud of that.”

The third game was another close contest, with the Panthers holding a slim margin for much of the game. Leading, 17-15, the Panthers went on a run – behind two key aces from senior libero Christine Oliver. The Panthers won the eight of the next ten points to take a 25-17 victory.

Potomac junior Tiana Patterson led the Panther offense, recording 15 kills and two blocks in the three games.

“She is always our leader on the court,” said Shutte. “She always plays strong for us every game.”

Sophomore middle hitter Katie Scheulen added four kills and eight blocks.

The win for Potomac gives them their fifth-straight victory heading into district play next week.

“[The win] is a big confidence booster for everybody,” said Shutte. “We are looking forward to our district play.”

LPS 2008 XC Preview: Can Anybody Stop the Panthers?

Please see below for video interviews

LPS Cross Country coverage sponsored by Potomac River Running

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Content Editor

(Sept. 5, 2008) – Can anybody stop the Panthers in 2008? That really has to be the question as Potomac Falls High School returns the top runners on both the boys and girls side — with Josh Hardin and Christina Lee looking for their third straight AA Dulles District individual titles — and both teams are deep enough to be considered threats in both the Region II and AA state meets.

In fact www.milestat.com ranked the Panther boys No. 2 and the Panther girls No. 4 in their preseason AA state rankings. Of course PF is not going to rest because they look good on paper … the boys, in particular, have some sour memories to the 2007 finish as the team, after winning its seventh straight Dulles District title, could not get out of regionals, finishing fourth and losing the final AA state spot in a tiebreaker.

“I know there are expectations but you never know until you put the shoes up on the line,” said PF coach Charles Null. “We should be verfy strong in the boys this year, primarily because of the seniors we have returning.”

In adddition to Hardin, who dropped lacrosse in the spring to concentrate on running fulltime and ran a 15:33 at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in the 5K, the Panthers have also have Ryan Hagen, Robert Mott and Brian Robinson returning.

The PF girls did move on and take fifth in the state, finishing behind Blacksburg, Brentsville, Millbrook and Hidden Valley. Of course both Brentsville adn Millbrook are in Region II and once again, winning the Region II meet may be as hard as winning the AA state meet.

“The girls last year were young. The benefit this year is we have a lot of surprises,” said Null who said that he has girls out this year that have played other sports in the past such as volleyball and soccer.

A key will be keeping Lee, who missed a good portion of the spring season due to injury, healthy. Melissa Saunders and Shannon Brady are just two of the Panthers back to support Lee.

“(Lee) seems to be better now,” said Null. “Injuries are a major factor. If your No. 1 and 2 go down, it is a whole new ballgame.”

Loudoun Valley did well in its first AAA season in the Cedar Run District, with the girls taking second and the boys third. The girls advanced to the AAA state meet, but only after a scoring error was corrected.

In state’s, Lee, now a junior, was fourth individually in the AA race with a 18:24.42 run. Hardin was 14th with Heritage’s Jesse Saladan taking 42nd. Stone Bridge’s Stephanie Paradis was 21st in the AAA race with Valley’s Colleen Kramer 70th. The Viking girls took 15th as a team.

Big Meets: Great Meadows tomorrow was to be a big meet but it has been canceled due to weather. That leaves Oatlands on Sept. 20 in Leesburg, Octoberfest on Oct. 4 atg Great Meadows and Glory Days on Oct. 11 at Bull Run as the meets with the most local teams.

AA Dulles District Capsules

Briar Woods

Outlook:
Falcon coach Eric Callender reports, “Both teams have grown considerably and we have a lot of new faces on varsity. I think we’re set up for our best season to date for both teams and should make Regionals for the boys and girls. On the girls side we get back a lot of runners who were missed last season due to injury but have been All-District in the past (4 returning All-District runners). On the boys side, we have added 4 new Junior boys to our Varsity team and the best freshman boy I’ve coached so far at BW. This group is VERY talented but inexperienced in racing – so we’ll see how the season starts this week.

Districts/Regionals: Girls: Potomac Falls is probably the favorite after winning last year and returning so many good runners. I think a few other teams in the district will really challenge them this season, including Heritage and possibly us. On the girls side our District is slowly becoming one of the best in the state with 4 teams ranked in the top 10 in Virginia AA end of last season. Boys: Potomac Falls has won the district 7 straight years I believe and this is probably the best group they’ve had to date coming back (at least since I’ve been here). They return 4 very good Senior All-District runners. They will be VERY difficult to catch this year.

Runners to Watch: Girls: Giana Leone is back after finishing 4th place in the District as a freshman last season. She’ll have a huge improvement this year after a long summer of training (last year she didn’t start running until mid-August so she only really had half a season). Boys: Zach Deaton (Junior) is doing XC for his first season but is already leading the team smashing our 5K time trial loop record by 30 seconds. He’s likely to break the school 5K record early this season.

Runners to Watch in the Future: Sophomore Amanda Presler finished 30th or so at Districts last season but had an amazing Track season this spring, posting one of the top 10 freshmen mile times in the state. She’s been training harder than anyone I’ve seen this summer and will likely be one of our top 3 on the girls team this fall. I would be surprised not to see her in the top 10 at Districts. Freshman Connor Pompilio is the most talented freshmen boy I’ve coached since Pete Dorrel (4:08 miler now) when I was an assistant at Blacksburg HS 4 years ago. If Connor really takes onto the sport watch for him to challenge for the District title in next couple years and possibly be one of the few All-District freshman on the boys side this season.(Editor’s note: Pompilio is already making his mark with a great opening week. See an article that will posted later today)

Broad Run

Outlook:
Spartan coach Michael Williams reports, “This is a rebuilding year.  The athletes are working very had and we hope to be competitive by the end of the season.

Runners to Watch: Boys: Sean Kelly, David Golden, David Ellsworth  Girls: Sarah Smaltz, Meredith Roger,  Riley Newland.
Runners to Watch in the Future: Girl: Maria Wilkins. Boy: Andrew Hayden.

Dominion

Outlook: Titan coach Brian Schmidt reports: “We should be a little stronger this year. We had some good training ove rthe summer with a lot of them going to XC camp. My girls still have some work to do but are improving greatly”.

District/Regionals: The district race will be for 2 – 4. Pot Falls should win the District and after that it is up for grabs. The regional race will be even tighter there is a lot of teams that are very close to each other for 4 spots. Tough to make predictions.

Runners to Watch: Nick Phillips, Nick Sharp, Jimmy Rion, and JT Duke.

Freedom

Outlook: Coach Eric Olsen reports “The Freedom XC teams (both boys and girls) goals are to be more competitive this season.  Our girls squad took a major step forward last year by qualifying for regionals.  Overall, we have improved, but we will need to work hard this season in a very competitive district.”

Districts/Regionals:
The district race will be very competitive this season, but I think Potomac Falls will be the squad to beat.  They are returning nearly all of their best runners, and as long as they stay healthy, they should be favored to advance all the way to states.

Runners to Watch: Two sophmores: Peter Johnson and Rachel Moffitt. Peter was one of the fastest freshman last year in the district, and Rachel recently had a top twenty finish at the Chancellor Invitational.

Heritage

Outlook: Pride coach Doug Gilbert reports: “Heritage CC looks to build on it’s past success and return to the state meet this year.  On the girl’s side, we return a solid mix of new faces and veteran runners.  On the boys side, last year’s group has been working hard all summer and is looking to compete with the top teams in the district.

Districts/Regionals: Our district continues to look stronger and stronger. It appears to me that they are closing in on being the strongest district in the state. As far as regionals go, our region is tough. Period. On the girl’s side, we are looking at having two of the strongest teams in the nation  in our region, leaving two available spots open for 5 possibly 6 state ranked teams.  Unfortunately, several very strong teams in the state will be sitting at home on the day of the state meet.  On the boys side, the story is much the same.

Runners to Watch: Boys-  Jake Flanagan, Josh Klug   Girls-  Grace Corapi (11:58 2-miler), Casey Sheehan (18th at regions), Hannah McLaughlin (finally healthy!), Jordan Gold (11:57 2-miler),  Lauren Stephens (fit as ever and ready to go!).

Runner to Watch in the Future: Boys – Andy Salzer (fun fact-  last year’s manager) is looking great right now and ready to go! Possible future number 1?

Loudoun County:

Outlook:
Raider coach Courtney Campbell reports: “Boys team returns a strong group of Juniors and seniors and should perform well as long as they maintain a tight pack. Girls team should be strong but we will be relying on possibly 5 or 6 runners in the top 10 who have not done cross country before. This makes for an exciting and interesting to watch year.”

District/Regionals: District looks the same as almost always. Potomac Falls looks very strong and then there is a fight amongst the rest with Dominion guys looking good. The region is once again very strong despite the realignment last year. Our region has 5 teams ranked in the top 10 in the state on the preseason milestat rankings. If not for the realignment we would have 7 of the top 10 so I guess it is an improvement but not by much.

Runners to Watch: On the girls side we return Julie Strange who has qualified for the state meet the past two years and is looking strong in preseason work-outs. Picking a top runner on the boys team is a challenge this year as we have a solid core up front that might change from meet to meet.

Runners to Watch in the Future: A runner to watch in the future is Tommy Curtin who is a sophomore currently running #4 for me and on the girls side there are many to choose from. For now I will pick Rebecca Hinch who is a sophomore out for the first time this year and ran #2 for me in the first meet.

Park View

Outlook: Reports Patriots coach Jim Nosal: “This is a building year. The kids are definitely looking forward to have a good successful year. They are all committed to improving their times”.

District/Regionals: Potomac Falls. Enough said.

Runners to Watch: Tommy Vereb, Kevin Cruz, David Fischer, Sarah Taylor, Lauren Rymer and Megan Barnes.

Potomac Falls
Please see the article above

AAA Liberty District

Stone Bridge

Outlook: Bulldog coach Jen Oblas reports “We lost one senior varsity girl, but have some new promising runners, so we hope to be competitive in our district again this season. Our boys are still young, but everyone is returning and ready to improve their standing in the district.

Disricts/Regionals: Our AAA district is always competitive, and the region is even tougher. It is always a fight for the top 4 district team spots.  We have the Monroe Parker Invitational this Saturday with all the Region teams, so it should be a good preview for the season.

Runners to Watch: For boys, Ryan McPoland is running strong if he can stay healthy. For the girls, our returning #1 runner, Stephanie Paradis, is ready to run for a top spot in the district.
