Leesburg (Apr. 16, 2009) – The 4th Annual LoudounPrepSports.com Invitational track and field meet this Saturday at Heritage High School features some top competition and includes all 10 high school from Loudoun plus nine other schools including Stonewall Jackson and Marshall.
Gates will open at 9 a.m. with $5 admission charge. Wristbands will be used so fans may reenter during the day. The field events start at 9:30 and the 3200 relay will be at 10 a.m. Running events are scheduled to get underway at 11:45. There are no prelims with the meet ran in sections according to times. The awards ceremony is scheduled for aproximately 4 p.m.
The Stone Bridge girls and Jefferson WV boys won the meet in 2008. Heritage girls and Broad Run boys won in 2007. The 2006 meet was rained out.
The highlight of the meet may be a match-up in the 200 meters between Stonewall Jackson’s Damien Thigpen (21.73) and Stone Bridge’s Daniel Allen (21.80). In the 100 meters, Allen has the top time this year in Virginia with a 10.69. He will square off against Corey Grant of Washington WV who has run a 11.03.
In the field events, David Wang of Stone Bridge (shot put) and Kevin Parks of Stonewal Jackson (triple jump) have Top 10 marks.
The Potomac Falls distance teams are always strong and Christina Lee is a top five performer in the state in the 800 and 1600 meters. In the 800 she will be challenged by Stone Bridge’s Stephanie Paradis and Sophia Holmes of Clarke County. The Panther girls 4×800 relay team should be pushed by Stone Bridge and Millbrook. All three teams come in with Top 10 times this year in the state. On the boys side, Ryan Hagen (1:56) in the 800 meters and Josh Hardin (9:33) 3200 meters are both state title threats in their events this year. The PF boys 4×800 realy team is No. 2 in the state and they should be pushed by both Marshall and Broad Run.
The Stone Bridge boys 4×100 relay team has run a 42.76 and faces off against Park View and Stonewall Jackson teams with good times.
In the 110 hurdles, Andre Best of Stone Bridge is No. 4 in the state and T.J. McPhaul of host Heritage comes in with Top 10 time in the 300 hurdles.
The meet ends with the 4×400 relay and the event could see as many as five teams on the boys side break 3:30 or better with Thigpen running for Stonewall Jackson. Broad Run, featuring Rashawn Hugg and Eric Hiatt, comes in with a top time of 3:27.
Forecasts are calling for sunny and 70+ degrees on Saturday!

D.C. Beltway Area: Boys’ Soccer Top 10

Boys’ Soccer Top 10
*Rankings and records as of April 14, 2 p.m

1. Osbourn Park (6-0-0)
The Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 21-2 this season, including a 3-1 win over No. 8 Osbourn (April 1) and a 3-0 win over No. 6 Woodbridge (March 25). Osbourn Park hosts No. 3 Battlefield on Friday.
2. Robinson (4-1-1)
The Rams are the defending Virginia AAA State runners up and return both goalkeeper Samir Badr from a year-long stint at the U.S. National Team academy in Bradenton, Fl, and midfielder Connor Alexander from a back injury that cost him the entirety of last season. Robinson beat No. 4 Westfield, 3-1 on the road, on March 27.
3. Battlefield (5-0-0)
The Bobcats have outscored their opponents 16-4 this year, including a 2-1 win over No. 8 Osbourn (March 20). A marquee road match-up with No. 1 Osbourn Park looms this Friday.
4. Westfield (6-1-0)
The only Bulldog blemish is a 3-1 home loss to No. 2 Robinson. Westfield is the highest scoring team in the D.C. area, having posted 32 goals in its seven games, and its next three opponents have a combined five wins.
5. Edison (6-0-1)
The Eagles drew, 2-2, with No. 6 Woodbridge over Spring Break and have the second-highest goals per game average in the Northern Region. Edison faces a 16-day lay-off between matches, though, with its next game not until April 22 against Falls Church.
6. Woodbridge (3-1-1)
In its five games, the Vikings have faced three Top 10 teams: No. 1 Osbourn Park (3-0 loss), No. 5 Edison (2-2 tie) and No. 10 Park View (4-1 win). Woodbridge travels to Forest Park on Friday.
7. Wakefield (7-0-1)
Since a 3-3 draw with T.C. Williams on March 18, the Warriors have won five games in a row. Wakefield features Ethiopian attacking midfielder Iyassu Bekele and will face No. 5 Edison on April 24.
8. Osbourn (5-2-0)
Against teams outside of the top three-ranked teams, the Eagles are 5-0-0 and have outscored opponents 21-2. Osbourn’s pair of losses to Osbourn Park, 3-1, and Battlefield, 2-1, are its only two blemishes. The Eagles have a rematch with Bobcats on April 21.
9. McLean (4-2-0)
The Highlanders’ two losses are to No. 4 Westfield, 5-2 on March 23, and No. 7 Wakefield, 4-2 on March 12. McLean faces South Lakes and W.T. Woodson in the coming week before a pivotal Liberty District match at Langley on April 23.
10. Park View (4-2-1)
The Patriots feature junior super striker K.C. Onyeador, who may be the best pure goal-scorer in the Washington, D.C. area. Park View has 12 goals in its last four games (3-1-0), but is 0-2-0 against teams in the Top 10.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Langley (4-1-1)
South County (6-1-0)

Patriots Remain Unbeaten in District with Second Half Comeback

Please check back for more video highlights!

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
(Apr. 13, 2009) – Park View High School senior tri-captain Pedro Mendoza smiled and then shook his head when asked if he could repeat what Patriot coach Arturo Jimenez said at halftime Monday with his team trailing 2-0 to Broad Run.
Suffice to say, Jimenez was not very happy with the first 40 minutes and Mendoza and his teammates responded with two goals in the first eight minutes of the second half to tie and then Mendoza (2 goals, assist) struck the game winner with about 10 seconds left in the first 5-minute overtime period for a 3-2 Park View victory.
“Me being upset, put a little fire in the guys,” said Jimenez.
That fire flamed Park View’s growing lead over the rest of the AA Dulles District field with the Patriots (4-0-1) with a 2.5 game advantage over four teams tied at 2-2 (Dominion, Freedom, Heritage, Potomac Falls).
For Broad Run (2-3) it was a second straight loss after leading 2-0 at the half and the Spartans, a preseason favorite for some, now sit in sixth place.
“This was really important because they were talking about how they were going to win district this year,” said Mendoza. “We just had to shut them up.”
For a half it was evident why the Spartans have district title aspirations as they controlled the pace and put in two goals in the final eight minutes of the half by senior Onari Tariah. In truth the Spartans should have been up by more than two goals at the break.
“I wasn’t very happy,” said Jimenez. “We should have been down four or five to nothing.”
It was probably even more frustrating to the Broad Run coaching staff in that the Spartans had a light practice Monday and all they did was work on finishing.
“We are good enough to make a run … but in back-to-back games we have lost 2-0 leads. You would think we would learn from our mistakes,” said Spartan coach Jonathan Hicks. “We are playing very well and have not recieved the results wanted thus far. We are young starting seven sophomores, two juniors and two seniors. We are positive things will continue to improve.”
The Spartans gameplan was shut down high-scoring Park View junior forward K.C. Onyeador and he was marked tight, even though he played the through ball that resulted in Mendoza’s game winner.
“That was a nice ball K.C. played to me and I just finished,” said Mendoza.
Mendoza got the Park View scoring going in the 46th minute by taking the ball on a nice run along the left flank and then at the end line, he played it back across the goal mouth where junior tri-captain Jose Garcia slid the ball home.
“Oh man, I was so excited about (scoring) because we were down 2-0,” said Garcia.
“It came up to me and I just hit it,” said Mendoza.
Jimenez said the tatical changes at half were to get his team to slow the pace down.
“We wanted to slow the game down and knock it around,” said Jimenez. “We knocked it outside and then came in … we got the goals that way.”
Park View’s furious second half opening almost results in four goals in the opening minutes as Spartan sophomore keeper Paul Hegedus had to make two great punch saves to prevent Patriot scores.
Broad Run adjusted with the score tied, shifting into a 4-4-2 alignment and as quickly as Park View came back, Broad Run was back in control again and the Spartans put an all out assault on the Patriot goal with Park View junior keeper Elton Sosa, a halftime substitute, forced to make several big saves.
The Spartans had numerous corner kicks and throw-ins by specialist junior Paul Ellington, which are basically de facto corner kicks, but Broad Run could not convert.
The game then evened out, especially after the rains came with 15 minutes to go. The showers did stop in overtime and just as the firs 5-minute period was about to end, Mendoza found himself in alone agaisnt Hegedus and he was able to slot the ball past the keeper.
“It was big time. They were pressing. We were pressing,” said Jimenez who was still unhappy that his team did not put together a complete game. “We can’t afford to play just one half.”
Tariah’s first goal in the first half came from a long pass played from the back by sophomore Kevin Reitzel that split the Park View defense right up the middle and the speedy Spartan forward was in on the keeper and caught him trying to cut down the angle, sliding the ball past him into the goal for the 1-0 lead.
With less than two minutes to go in the half, Ellington lofted a throw-in from just inside the corner flag and Toariah headed it down to the ground at the far post. The ball bounced high and was spinning into the net when a Patriot defender tried to knock it out but only managed to bury the ball deeper into the top of the net for a 2-0 Broad Run lead.
Corner Kicks: Officials moved the start time up 15 minutes to try and avoid the rain and that move paid off as only the final 15 minutes of regulation was played on a wet field … Onyeador and Broad Run midfielder Danny Reategui are teammates on the Great Falls Elite club team that played an international field over spring break in the Tiffany Cup … In tonight’s district action, Broad Run (2-3) hosts Potomac Falls (2-2), Park View (3-0-1) travels to Briar Woods (1-3), a team that knocked off defending regular-season champion Heritage last time out; Loudoun County (1-2-1) is at Freedom (2-2); and Dominion (2-2) travels to Heritage (2-2).

Park View Football Team on Volunteer Trip over Spring Break

Check out this article sent by Park View High School – Patriot Football Team Doing Some Good Work over Spring Break!

For the 2009 Spring Break, eleven members of the Park View High School football team will be traveling to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to spend their week away from school building houses while participating on a Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge project.  This is the second time in the past three years that players have traveled to Forsyth County, having first participated in the spring of 2007.

Park View head football coach Andy Hill is excited about this opportunity for a couple of reasons: “Not only does this give our kids a chance to bond outside of the school and the weight room, but it also reinforces that commitment to serving one’s community and being part of something that’s bigger than yourself.”

Not only are the players volunteering their week away from the classroom, they were also responsible to raise over $3,000 to cover the cost of the trip.  Thus, a monthly pancake breakfast was born to generate funds for the trip.

The Patriots conducted their breakfast fundraisers – featuring pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, coffee, and juice – as an “All You Can Eat” event on Valentine’s Day, and they followed up with their second breakfast this past March 14.  The event is becoming a popular event, and Coach Hill has indicated that the monthly tradition will continue with the next breakfast being held on Saturday, April 18.  He is excited because that breakfast will be conducted by the football class of 2012, and it will feature a slideshow and DVD of highlights from the 2009 Habitat trip.

The trip itself will begin on Sunday, April 5 when the participating players and chaperones (Coach Hill and his father will be chaperoning the trip) will depart from Park View High School at noon.  The drive down to Winston-Salem will give players the opportunity to visit four colleges.  The first stop will be Liberty University, which is of particular interest to the players because it serves as the site of the AA State Championship football games each fall.  After leaving Liberty, the team will travel to Blacksburg to visit Virginia Tech, and they will spend Sunday night outside of Blacksburg.  Monday morning will see the team complete the remaining two-hour drive to Winston-Salem, and upon arriving they will visit both Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University.  Also scheduled for the trip, the team will travel home on Saturday, April 11 by traveling east through Chapel Hill, home of the University of North Carolina, before heading north to conclude the week-long trip.

Players will work Tuesday through Friday, and there are currently two projects underway at Habitat Forsyth.  Work projects vary from house to house, but players are expecting to invest a considerable effort to help move their assigned project towards completion.

Rising senior and 2009 co-captain, Michael Devaney expressed his thoughts about the trip in stating, “This is going to be a great trip, especially since we know that we are doing something to help a family in need.  I’m hoping we get to meet the family (whose) house we are working on, but either way, it’s good to know that we’re doing something that will have a lasting and positive effect.”  His thoughts are representative of many of his teammates, as the excitement surround the trip is evident in talking to those participating.

Coach Hill believes that this will be a great experience, and that it will be a chance to emphasize the “life skill” of leadership through service.  He is encouraging all Park View football supporters to come to the April 18 Pancake Breakfast to see the slide show and DVD of the trip.

Boys’ Soccer: Blackburn Rovers FC 2, GFA Elite 0

*Click the links on the top-left for full video and photo coverage from Thursday’s games.*

With its tournament life at stake, Great Falls Elite rattled off repeated scoring chances against Blackburn Rovers FC.

Unfortunately for the team from Fairfax County, Va., however, the last line of English defense was true to form.

Blackburn goalkeeper Matthew Urwin had five saves — and was assisted by a pair of open-goal blocked shots by his back line — en route to a clean sheet and a 2-0 win for the Premiere League side at Georgetown University on Thursday, which locked up a berth in the Tiffany Cup championship.

“It’s always good,” Urwin said of his shutout. “If you keep the clean sheet, you don’t lose, do you? It’s always good to keep the clean sheet.”

While shutouts make losses impossible, wins require goals.

And in the sixth minute, Blackburn striker Jason Blanton — a U-17 England National Team call-up — earned one for the visitors on a free kick.

The one-goal lead held for the remainder of the first half, despite several threats to goal from GFA Elite.

The most menacing chance was an artful volley by midfielder Dylan Bowman — a U-17 Men’s National Team pool player — that Urwin frayed with a leaping left-handed punch in the 13th minute.

But it was not until the 61st minute that the club from Northwest England lengthened its margin.

Bowman made a long run down the left channel before firing a low shot that was kicked to the top of the box by GFA keeper Mark Bixler. Rovers midfielder Filip Pivkovski settled the rebound, dribbled to the end line and played a ball to midfielder James Knowles at the top of the six.

Knowles stretched the net with a smooth, right-footed strike, all but clinching a win and a championship game berth with Real Madrid CF at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va., on Saturday at 11 a.m.

“It takes pressure of you,” said Urwin of Knowles’ insurance goal. “You still have to work hard, but it keeps pressure of you.

“That’s a bit better, isn’t it?”

Added Knowles, a Northern Ireland youth national team member: “It gives us more time to relax and we can bring players off, which gives us more time to relax for the final.”

GFA Elite beats local foe before taking on World

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

Before Great Falls Academy Elite has to play some of the top teams amateur club teams from around the world, it got to face a familiar foe in the Freestate Soccer Academy from Bowie, Md.

The two teams have played four or five times in the past couple months. And according to forward K.C. Onyeador, GFA Elite has come out on top each time.

That pattern continued Monday as GFA Elite defeated its metro area foe, 2-0, at Trinity College in GFA’s first game in the International Amateur Soccer Tournament

Onyeador, who plays for Park View High School, scored his team’s second goal while National Pool player Dylan Bowman of James River broke what was a scoreless game with a  header goal three minutes into the second half.

“We hold the upper hand,” Bowman said of the rivalry with Freestate. “We knew we had some chances and knew we were going to get some second half goals. We just had to put them away.”

Bowman’s goal came off a cross from Robinson forward Koko Makumbi. The chipped cross found Bowman in traffic near the penalty stripe. His header wasn’t all that powerful but it was just inside the right post to give GFA a 1-0 lead.

“Dylan’s goal, that was a great goal,” Onyeador said. “The ball was over me and Dylan comes out of nowhere and puts it in the bottom corner.”

“Probably my first headed goal,” Bowman added.

Onyeador’s goal, off a nifty little pass from Bowman, was scored just 14 minutes later in the 62nd minute.

But now it’s on to literally more foreign competition for GFA Elite. The club will face Chivas de Corazon from Guadalajara, Mexico on Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers from Blackburn, England on Thursday.

“It’s good to get off to a good start because our next challenges are going to be pretty big,” Onyeador said.

GFA Elite Coach Ed Beach watched the two teams battle to a tie on Sunday.

“I was very, very, very impressed,” Beach said. “It seems they brought over their better players and we’ll have our hands more than full.”

Raider Softball Team Taking No Break as They Roll Past Pioneers

(Apr. 7, 2009) – What break? The Loudoun County High School softball team has kept right on rolling as the Raiders crushed Millbrook on Monday, 15-1.
Raider coach Ryan Vance called it a “all around great team effort again from Holt’z 1-hitter, 1-walk, five strikeout performance ot the 18 hits … pounded out.”
Park View was not as fortunate Monday as the Patriots were bashed by the Metro area’s top-ranked team Battlefield, 16-0. Both contests were non-district.
For the Raiders in their win:
Rochelle Latka 5-5, SB, 4 runs, 5 RBI’s
Erin Ertel 3-5, 2 runs, 4 RBI’s
Lindsey Holtz 1-4, BB
Kelley Duerbeck, 2-5, RBI
Holly Norris, 1-4, HR, BB, 2 RBI’s 1 run

Megan Lindsey 2-4, 2 runs
Renay Aubel added a BB, run
Rachel Wigfield 2-2, 2 runs, 1 SAC

Cortni Reitz added run
LCHS continues District play after spring break on 14th of April at Freedom HS.
In the Patriot loss the game ended in the sixth inning on a two run homer that put the Bobcats over the mercy rule limit.
Pats coach Ed Abner said that “Park View only mustered two hits against two Battlefield hurlers but both were triples; one by sophomore Robin Heironimus and one by junior Sammie Gleason.”
Freshman Brittney Moore — Park View’s starter while Heironimus recovers from injury — absorbed the loss for the Patriots and is now 3-4 for the season.  Battlefield belted out 14 hits, including two home runs and a triple.
The Patriots will return to action on Tuesday, 14 April against Briar Woods.

Spring Sports Round-up: April 1-4

LoudounPrepSports.com Spring Round-up

Apri 1-4 (April Fools Edition)

OK … sounds like a lot … four days but we had a complete rain out on April 3 and April 4 was a light schedule as Spring Break started … so, since the NCAA title game is a blowout, you might as well sit back and enjoy this round-up …

Wed. April 1
Baseball
Briar Woods 9, Handley 2
The Skinny: Falcon coach Josh Mosser reports that BW won its third straight game tonight, scoring a 9-2 victory over the Judges of John Handley High School.  Austin Frattali pitched 4.2 innings to pick up his second win of the year.  Garrett Thomas pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn his first save.

Softball
Heritage 14, Millbrook 7
The Skinny: Pride win their first game of the season … surely a happy Heritage parent wants to report a nugget or two? Just email us at dsousa@digitalsports.com.

Briar Woods 1, Handley 0
The Skinny: Falcon assistant Chris Starke reports that Junior Kate Fowler scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Briar Woods a hard-fought 1-0 win over visiting Handley in non-district softball action Wednesday night in Ashburn. The Falcons tied a school record with their fifth straight win – a mark set last season – and improved to 6-1 overall.

Fowler led off the home half of the final inning with a two-strike single to right and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jillian Olson placed a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Fowler to third, and, after a strikeout, Fowler raced home with the lone run of the game as a low pitch hit the dirt in front of the plate and squirted through the catcher’s legs.

Just one night after pounding out 13 hits in a 16-0 win over Heritage, the Falcons struggled to find any offensive rhythm, managing just four hits against Handley junior Chelsea Hamric.

However, Briar Woods freshman Macy Jones and sophomore Kristina Karagiorgis were even better in the circle, combining for a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Jones worked the first five innings and fanned six Handley batters, while Karagiorgis earned the win after pitching the final two frames and posting four strikeouts.

The Falcons appeared to pick up right where they left off last night against Heritage, as junior Holly Dominguez ripped a triple to left center to start the bottom of the first. However, she was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to third, and Hamric used a strikeout and ground out ended the inning.

Handley had its only base runners in the top of the second. Caitlin Johnson drew a lead-off walk but was erased on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Hamric. Hamric later advanced to second on a passed ball, but Jones struck out Lauren Yaider for the second out and Fowler made a fine running back-handed catch of a low foul ball outside the first base bag to end the inning.

Fowler’s play was one of three excellent defensive stops made by the Falcons in the game. With one out in the fourth, sophomore Alex Fierszt tracked down a deep fly ball that would have otherwise resulted in extra bases. Fellow sophomore Kasey Ball robbed Amarisa Alvarez of a would-be leadoff single in the seventh, making a great backhanded stop of a sharply hit ball up the middle and then firing to first for the out.

Briar Woods had a few chances in the game but came up empty until the seventh. Fowler drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the second but was erased on a fielder’s choice, and Dominguez endured the same fate in the third. Ball hit a one-out single in the fourth and Dominguez added a two-out single in the fifth, but both were again wiped out on fielder’s choices.

Loudoun County 16, Herndon 6
The Skinny: Raider coach Ryan Vance reports that LC bounces back nicely from the tough extra inning loss to Broad Run on Tuesday with another outstanding team effort in all phases of the game. LCHS defense committed only its fourth error of the year on a tough line drive in the 3rd inning. Back to back night of the defensive stepping up to get LCHS out of some tough jams. Holtz pitched 7 innings, giving up 5 earned runs on 9 hits, 5 BB, 8 K’s. Offense: 14 hits, 5 SB, 6 BB
Rochelle Latka  1-4, 2 SB, 1 run, 1 RBI
Erin Ertel 2-4, 2 SB, 2 Runs
Lindsey Holtz 2-4,
Holly Norris 2-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI
Taylor Grimmell 1-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI
Megan Lindsey 3-4, 2 runs, 4 RBI’s
Renay Aubel 1-2, 2 runs, 1 RBI
Kelley Duerbeck 2-4, 3 RBI’s
Rachel Wigfield added a run a SB
Cortni Reitz added a run
Stone Bridge 3, Park View 1
The Skinny: Bulldogs win third game in three days as Cori Prince drives in two runs with a single with one out in the top of the seventh innning. Cassie Phillips pitched a complete game, striking out six, and allowing four hits. Pats coach Ed Abner reports that PV was leading 1-0 going into the seventh, the Patriots gave up five hits to the Bulldogs, who plated all three of their runs with one out.  Freshman Brittney Moore absorbed the loss for the Patriots to even her record (and Park View’s) at 3-3.  All three Bulldog runs were earned.  The offensive highlight of the evening for the Patriots was Junior Samantha Gleason’s two hits, one of which was a solo home run in the third.  That hit and subsequent run stood all the way into the seventh but the Patriots were unable to hold on.  The Patriots accumulated only four hits, going just 1/14 over the last four and a third innings.  Defensively, the Patriots were strong.  Senior Kristin Oravetz was outstanding at second base and Brittney Moore had 7 assists from the mound.

Girls’ soccer
Stone Bridge 7, Marshall 0
The Skinny: Bulldog assistant coach Sherrie Colby reports that Stone Bridge Bulldogs earned their first district win Wednesday night at home against the Marshall Statesmen. Five minutes into the game, senior Krysti Rodriguez scored the first goal of the night with an assist from her freshman sister Melissa Rodriguez. M. Rodriguez scored 4 minutes later off a pass from junior Jennifer Skogerboe. Three minutes later it was Skogerboe who scored off a cross from freshman Ashley Ferguson. In the second half, K. Rodriguez headed the ball into the back of the net from a Skogerboe corner kick. Soon after, K. Rodriguez scored her third goal of the night taking a shot from just inside the 18-yard box. After getting past a couple of Marshall defenders, Ferguson scored her own goal of the night. Scoring the final goal of the night was Sophomore Emily Fredrikson off a cross from freshman Erin Leonard. Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Harmison recorded 2 saves for the night. Stone Bridge will resume play Tuesday, April 14 at home against Woodson.

Loudoun Valley 7, Centreville 6
The Skinny: What a comeback as the Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to ****** a victory away from the Centreville Wildcats, winning 7-6. With the Wildcats ahead 6-4, senior Iain Mottice led the inning off with a walk.  Wildcat southpaw Connor Bach would fan the next two Viking hitters.  With two outs, freshman Matt Reed laced a single to centerfield to put runners at first and second base.  Junior Peter Evans came to the plate and delivered a two run double to the gap in left centerfield plating both Mottice and Reed.  With the score tied and the winning run at second base, junior Beattie Southerland was intentionally walked.  Senior Tyler Huffman came in to pinch hit and he was walked on four straight pitches.  With two outs and the bases jammed, junior Alexander Barr hit a single into centerfield for the game winning RBI.

Senior TJ Daeschner started the game for the Vikings throwing six complete innings. He gave up five runs (4 earned) on six hits while striking out seven hitters.  Senior Daniel Burke came in the top of the 7th inning and pitched 2/3 of an inning. Heritage 7, Freedom 4
The Skinny: Eagle coach Chris Bourassa reports that Heritage comes from behind to win 7-4 with pitcher Andy Zarobila pitching 6 innings for the win.  Freedom had 9 hits, 7 walks and a HPB but was 0-8 in bases loaded situations leaving the bases loaded in three innings and ultimately 13 runners left on base.  Kyle Severns led the Eagles offense with a solo home run, double, walk, HBP, and 2 RBI.  Brendon Shockley added two hits and 2 RBI.  Ali Moosvi pitched 6 innings from Freedom allowing 7 hits, 2 walks, and 5 earned runs. Kyle Groome pitched a 1-2-3 7th, recording 2 strikeouts.

Pride coach Ryan Price reports that his pitcher Andy Zarobila struggled early, but was able to find the zone and earn the win over the host Eagles.  Zarobila threw 6 innings, giving up 3 runs, all three were earned.  Zarobila allowed 9 hits in the game, but struck out 9 hitters and walked 5 batters, and hit one.

Mitchell Bowers came in in relief in the 7th getting Baker to ground out, then loaded the bases on a walk, a hit, and another walk.  Bowers then struck out Murphy.  This brought up Severns to the plate, who had already hit a home run and a double.  He was intentionally walked which brought a run in making it 7-4.  Bowers was able to get Groome to ground out to second baseman Peter Harbolick to end the game.
For the Pride:

Stone Bridge 3, Woodson 2
The Skinny: Benny Piccolo reports that a strong pitching performance by Sr. Nick Fialdini and closer Sr. Johnny Bladel and a couple hits by Sr. Pat Piccolo 2-3 with a run scored was enough for Stone Bridge to pull out a hard fought 3-2 victory.

Woodson scored first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.  Jr. Matt Patrick reached on an error, Sophmore John McGillicuddy got a one out double to put runners on second and third.  Fialdini then got the next batter to pop out to the shortstop and then threw a wild pitch to allow a run in before striking out Sr, Kirk Lewis to end the inning.  In the third Woodson was threating again as Jr. Colin Dempsey led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on a single by Sr. Max Waizennegger.  Fialdini struck out Jr. Brendan Breslin and after Waizenegger stole second Coach Plank intentionally walked Jr. Connor Finnerty to load the bases.  Fialdini then struck out Matt Patrick.  Connor Reilly then hit a ball up the middle but Pat Piccolo made a nice diving stab and toss to second to end the rally.

Stone Bridge took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.  Pat Piccolo led off with a double down the right field line.  Sr. Brad Koch sacrificed him to third and then he scored on a base hit by sophomore Spenser Rositano.  On a hit and run Rositano got to second as Michael Prince grounded to the shortstop.  Coach Warren then intentionally walked Johnny Bladel and on a double steal the catcher threw the ball into left field allowing Rositano to score.  Stone Bridge added a run in the fourth.  Jr. Taylor Lambke got a one-out single up the middle, Jr, Dillon Berger got hit by a pitch and Pat Piccolo singled to left to load the bases.  Brad Koch then grounded out to short scoring lambke.

Woodson made the score 3-2 in the fifth.  Max Waizenegger led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Connor Finnerty.
Johnny Bladel came on in relief in the sixth and shut down Woodson the rest of the way striking out the side in the top of the seventh to get the save.

Heritage 15, Loudoun County 10
The Skinny: Our inbox used to be full of the greatest Pride lax details … personally we blame the competition. The WashPost covers Heritage’s first game of the week and then Loudoun Times-Mirror does this game. Heck … we will just link to the Times-Mirror story and the LPS Monkey will lick his wounds in the corner. Actually the Little Guy felt much better than LC’s Adam Wilburn reported the following: The Raiders fell to 0-2 in district play 1-3 overall Thursday as they were defeated 15-10 by Heritage. The Raiders started strong as they quickly amassed a 4-1 lead but could not hold on for the victory. Points were scored by the following:

Luke Driscoll: 3 goals 1 assist
Peyton Stone: 1 goal 2 assists
Chris Cameron: 2 goals
Jack Reimers: 2 goals
Seth Jewell: 1 goal
Josh Spencer: 1 goal

Loudoun Valley 12, Stonewall 1
The Skinny: LVHS opened district play with a strong win against Cedar Run opponent Stonewall Jackson. The game started off sloppy with many turnover, partially due to a 10 day gap between games due to inclement weather. But midway into the second quarter, Valley began getting their legs and took a 5-1 lead into the half. Valley surpassed their halftime lead by scoring 7 after half. This was sparked by junior attackmen, Dylan Zook who scored four goals and had two assists. Defensivley the Vikings palyed well allowing one goal on a night where Stonewall only took 13 shots. Goalie Alex Sharrer recorded 7 saves. The entire team saw time in the contest doing a great job with their opportunities.

Third year head coach Pete Lenotti awarded Fawkes the Game Ball as he held off the Mustangs with 17 saves on the night.  The Titans put the game away in the 3rd with 5 goals, including 3 within a minute, taking a 9 to 3 lead into the 4th. The Skinny: Falcon coach Laura Nelson reports that the Briar Woods High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse team increased its overall record to an unprecedented 6-0 with a win over Park View High School 19-4 on Thursday, April 2, 2009.  In the four year history of the school, this is by far the best start this team has ever earned.

The win was a great team effort with ten different girls scoring.  Leading the goal-scorers was Senior Meaghan Leon.  Juniors Julianne Lewis and Shannon Wood each added three goals, as did newcomer and Sophomore Mary Sydney Garrett.  Adding one goal a piece were Seniors Amanda Fisher, Aminah Aziz and Katie Cerow, Juniors Priscilla Smith and Taylor Fisher and Sophmore Danielle Powell.  Of the 19 goals, 12 were assisted by varying team members, including Taylor Miller and Emily Jensen.

Keeping Park View to its four goals, the defense played brilliantly.  Defenders Carrie Thysse, Katie Saba and Christine Edeline dominated the defensive end of the field, all guided by goalie Mariko Itchkawich.

Coach Nelson and Coach Breinig could not be any prouder of their team and they look forward to seeing just how far they are going to go this season and beyond.

Park View Honors 1984 AA State Championship Baseball Team

By Dan Sousa

Sterling (Apr. 5, 2009) – After 25 years those Park View High School AA state title baseball jackets still fit suprisingly well!
Former Park View High School baseball coach Mike Nunnally and nine of his players from that 1984 state title team — one of only three in Loudoun history to win a VHSL state baseball crown — were honored prior to Saturday’s Park View-Bishop O’Connell match-up in the Cheers Sports Spring Break Tournament which is being hosted by both Freedom of South Riding and Park View.
Returning in addition to Nunnally and his assistant coach Elmer Fox — now the assistant athletic director at Briar Woods High School — were Dennis Quinn, Mike Menapace, Ron Griffith, Tim McLain, Billy Lightkep, Steve Cave, Brian Paugh, Tim Rounsley and Randy Boyer, who made the trip from Iowa. Menapace, to the delight of the crowd, not only wore a state title jacket but unzipped it to reveal his old Park View No. 16 jersey … with Athletic Director Joe Breinig saying he wouldn’t be charged for not turning it in.
The ceremony ended with Nunnally throwing out the first pitch and it will surprise nobody to know that when Nunnally bounced that pitch … he requested a second chance and was given it. He fired a strike over the plate.
