Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Hovland Header
— Robinson senior Annie Hovland slams home this corner kick from senior Jensen Smith via header in the 16th minute of the No. 1 Rams’ 2-0 win over the No. 3 Chargers.
Ein Oop to Kabelac — Churchill junior Zoe Kabelac scores one of her five goals
on an alley-oop pass from Sophia Ein. Kabelac led No. 9 Churchill to a 12-11
win over Walter Johnson.
Blackout — Bobcat senior Brittany Black struck out 11 Vikings on Thursday. Check below for more from this game.
Grimm Comeback — Centreville senior Dan Grimm makes up 20 meters in the final lap to pull away from Edison senior Leoule Degfae in the 1600-meter race at the Lake Braddock Hall of Fame Invitational on Saturday.

No. 10 –Liddle League
Prince William County, Virginia
— Battlefield sophomore 3B Bailey Liddle stepped to the plate with the bases full of Bobcats in the bottom of the eighth inning and hit a walk-off infield single to lift Battlefield — ranked No. 12 in the nation in the USA Today/NFCA Fast-Pitch Poll — over Loudoun Valley, 1-0, on Thursday.

No. 9 –Ley’ing Out
Prince William County, Virginia
— In a match between No. 1 Osbourn Park and No. 3 Battlefield, Yellow Jack junior goalkeeper Dylan Leygraaf leaped for this top-shelf save of a well-placed shot by Bobcat senior Franco Buzzalino to preserve a 0-0 draw in a pivotal Cedar Run District game.

No. 8 — 4-6-3 Saves Shutout
S.M.A.C., Maryland — In the bottom of the seventh inning, Patuxent senior pitcher Joey Mindick held a 3-0 lead, but allowed Chopticon to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, though, Mindick forced this 4-6-3 double play to close out his complete-game, shutout win.

No. 7 –– Rainy Goals
Jennens Excuse-Me Game-Winner

Loudoun County, Virginia
— With the score tied against Dulles District foe Potomac Falls, Broad Run sophomore Andrew Jennens hits this well-placed — albeit admittedly accidental — 52nd-minute goal, which proved the game-winner, as the Spartans went on to win, 2-1.

If You Don’t Know, Now You Knowles
Northern Region, Virginia
— In a pivotal National District match, Yorktown and No. 10 Washington-Lee were still tied, 0-0, in the 78th minute when Patriot junior Logan Knowles struck this corner kick in the air and over the General goalkeeper for the last-minute, game-winning goal.

No. 6 –Cohen, Go In
Montgomery County, Maryland
— Wildcat senior attack Daniel Cohen — with his back to a defender and the cage — whips in a blind-sided goal as Walter Johnson beat Churchill, 8-6, on Friday.

No. 5 –Bed’Gnarly
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Terrible title, I know. Bowie senior pitcher Sarah Bednarik pitched a five-inning perfect game in the Bulldogs’ 26-0 win over the Mustangs. Bednarik retired all 15 Bladensburg batters in order, recording seven strikeouts, seven ground outs and one fly out.

No. 4 –Mendoza Sparks Comeback  1  2
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Trailing by two goals to Broad Run at halftime, No. 9 Park View leaned on a masterful second half by senior Pedro Mendoza in a 3-2, come-from-behind win. Mendoza scored the equalizer on a cracking shot from 30 yards away and chipped the Spartan keeper off a K.C. Onyeador assist in overtime for the game-winner.

No. 3 –North Point No-No
S.M.A.C., Maryland — Eagle seniors Keith Ryan and Tony Raza-Montes combined for a no-hitter as North Point beat Great Mills, 9-2, on Saturday. The no-hit performance came in the second game of the first doubleheader in the Eagles’ three-year history.

No. 2 –Wahl’k-Off
Northern Region, Virginia
— West Springfield junior ace Bobby Wahl blew a two-run lead to rival South County just two innings before he came to the plate to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning in a tie game. Three pitches into his at-bat, Wahl had a Wahl’k-off solo home run to lift the Spartans over the Stallions, 4-3.

No. 1 — Three Mile Eiland
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Trailing by two runs to Surrattsville and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, Gwynn Park senior 1B Reggie Eiland crushed this offering over the left-field wall for a walk-off grand slam and an 11-9, Yellow Jacket win.

D.C. Beltway Area: Boys’ Soccer Top 10

Boys’ Soccer Top 10
*Rankings and records as of April 20

1. Osbourn Park (6-0-1) — LW: 1
The
Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 21-2 this season,
including a 3-1 win over Osbourn and a 3-0 win over No.
6 Woodbridge. Osbourn Park tied No. 3 Battlefield, 0-0, on Friday. It faces Loudoun Valley and Stonewall Jackson this week.
2. Robinson (5-1-1) — LW: 2
The Rams had not played since March 30 before they beat Chantilly, 1-0, on Friday. Robinson faces a road test against Herndon — a team that is starting to come together — on Wednesday before an intriguing non-district game with Yorktown on Friday.
3. Battlefield (6-0-1) — LW: 3
The
Bobcats tied the Yellow Jackets, 0-0, on the road in an evenly-matched game to remain in the top spot in the Cedar Run District very early in district play. Battlefield has Osbourn and Culpeper scheduled this week.
4. Westfield (6-1-0) — LW: 4
The
only Bulldog blemish is a 3-1 home loss to No. 2 Robinson. Westfield is
the highest scoring team in the D.C. area, having posted 32 goals in
its seven games, but it has not played since April 1. Westfield travels to Chantilly for an early-afternoon game on Wednesday and hosts Fairfax Friday night.
5. Edison (6-0-1) — LW: 5
The
Eagles drew, 2-2, with No. 6 Woodbridge on April 7, but have not played since then. They play Falls Church on Wednesday as a warm-up for Friday’s match with No. 7 Wakefield, which will decide the top team in the National District standings.
6. Woodbridge (3-1-2) — LW: 6
In
its six games, the Vikings have faced three Top 10 teams: No. 1
Osbourn Park (3-0 loss), No. 5 Edison (2-2 tie) and No. 10 Park View
(4-1 win). Woodbridge tied Forest Park, 0-0, on Friday and has Freedom (Woodbridge) and Potomac on the schedule in the upcoming week.
7. Wakefield (8-0-1) — LW: 7
The Warriors won their only game this week — 2-1 over Mount Vernon — and will face No. 5 Edison on April 24.
8. McLean (6-2-0) — LW: 9
The
Highlanders’ two losses are to No. 4 Westfield, 5-2 on March 23, and
No. 7 Wakefield, 4-2 on March 12. McLean beat Jefferson and South Lakes last week, but has a critical road game at No. 9 Langley this Thursday.
9. Langley (6-1-1) — LW: N/A
The
Saxons move into the Top 10 after a pair of 4-0 wins last week over Marshall and W.T. Woodson. Langley has won six-straight games and faces Madison and No. 8 McLean at home this week.
10. South County (7-1-0) — LW: N/A
Stallion goalkeeper Javier Hernandez has seven clean sheets in only eight games this season. The lone exception was a 3-0 loss to T.C. Williams (4-6-1) on April 2. South County faces West Springfield and Hayfield this week.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Osbourn (5-3-0) — LW: 8
Park View (6-3-1) — LW: 10
Stone Bridge (5-1-1)
West Springfield (4-3-1)

Loudoun Softball Notebook

LoudounPrepSport.com Softball Notebook: April 17

By Dan “courtesy runner” Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

(Apr. 17, 2009) – Briar Woods High School, on a school record six-game winning streak, not only has a chance to extend that streak to eight games in the next 24 hours, but the Falcons have a clear chance to establish themselves as the team closest on the heels of AA Dulles District frontrunner, two-time defending state champion Broad Run.

Briar Woods (4-1 in district, 6-2 overall) travels to Potomac Falls (4-1, 7-1) tonight at 6 p.m. in a marquee match-up and then the Falcons host Loudoun County (3-2, 5-2) on Saturday at noon.

How tight is this district? Consider that Broad Run (4-0, 6-1) sits on top of the standings but that two of those four district victories include a 1-0 win over Potomac Falls earlier this week and a 3-2 extra inning win at Loudoun County. The Panthers loss in Ashburn on Tuesday is their only blemish on the season that includes a 3-0 win over Loudoun County.

Briar Woods fell to Broad Run, 3-0, in the second game of the season but the Falcons have since won a school-record six straight games including their first ever win over Park View this week. Briar Woods has out-scored opponents by a 57-3 margin on the year.

In AAA: Loudoun Valley (4-1, 5-2) has to figure into any argument over the area’s top softball team, especially after the Vikes pushed No. 1 Battlefield (6-0, 9-0) into extra innings Thursday before falling 1-0. It was the Vikes for loss since opening with a loss to Stone Bridge, a team that ended Broad Run’s two-year plus winning streak before Spring Break. The Vikes are second in the Cedar Run with Osbourn Park and Stonewall Jackson each with two losses in district.

Stone Bridge (4-1, 8-2) is one game in the loss column behind Liberty District leader Madison (6-0, 9-0). The Bulldogs can make a big statement when they travel to Vienna tonight to take on the district leading Warhawks. McLean (4-1, 8-3) and Langley (3-1, 5-3) are also in the mix.

Weekend Schedule
Fri
Stone Bridge @ Madison, 6:30
Fauquier @ Loudoun Valley, 6
Briar Woods @ Potomac Falls, 6
Freedom @ Park View, 6
Heritage @ Leesburg, 6
Sat
Yorktown @ Loudoun Valley, noon
Heritage @ Broad Run, 1
Loudoun County @ Briar Woods, noon

Weekly Recaps

Briar Woods 7, Park View 0
The Skinny: Falcons gain first ever win over Patriots.

BW assistant coach Chris Starke filed his usual awesome report after the game:

Junior Kate Fowler tossed a three-hit shutout and fellow junior Holly Dominguez went 2-for-2 with two singles, two walks and two runs scored as Briar Woods picked up its first-ever win over Park View 7-0 on a cold and rainy Tuesday night in Ashburn.
The Falcons improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Dulles District with their school-record sixth straight win, and they also matched the school single-season mark of seven shutout victories they set just last year. In eight games so far this season, Briar Woods has outscored its opponents by a combined 57-3 and has allowed just one earned run.
After trading two scoreless innings with the Patriots, Briar Woods took control of the game with four runs in the third. The Falcons loaded the bases behind a lead-off single by sophomore Alex Fierszt, a walk by
Dominguez and a single by sophomore Kristina Karagiorgis. Freshman Macy Jones then coaxed a walk to plate Fierszt with the game’s first run, and Dominguez beat out a throw home on a fielder’s choice off the bat of junior Caitlin Blalock. Sophomore Kasey Ball then added a key two-run single to cap the inning.
The Falcons increased their advantage to 5-0 with another run in the bottom of the fourth when Dominguez laced a lead-off single and later scored on a Blalock single.
Junior Claire Bayles added a pinch-hit, two-run single in the sixth to close out the scoring.
The run support was more than enough for Fowler, who turned in yet another strong performance in the circle. She battled the poor weather conditions and worked out of several jams to improve to 5-1 on the
season.
After retiring the side in the first, Fowler allowed a lead-off walk and hit the next batter in the second before using a sacrifice bunt, a ground out and a foul out to end the Patriot threat.
Park View got its first hit of the game on a double by Samantha Thomas with two outs in the third, but she was erased on a fielder’s choice to end the frame.
Fowler issued two-out walks in the fourth and sixth innings but used strike outs to close both frames. In the fifth, Fowler gave up a two-out single by Samantha Gleason but helped her own cause by snared a
screaming liner off the bat of Thomas to end that inning.
Park View looked to avoid the shutout in the top of the seventh when it had runners on second and third with two out, but Fowler notched her
ninth strikeout of the game to seal the victory.
With her 2-for-2 effort at the plate, Dominguez has now hit safely in each of her last eight official at-bats over the past three games (walks do not count as at-bats). Blalock finished 2-for-4 with two singles and
two RBIs, while Ball also drove in two runs and drew a walk.
Park View coach Ed Abener filed this report after the game as well:
Park View lost their third straight game tonight—this one by a score of 7-0 to Briar Woods.  The Falcons picked up seven runs on seven hits while the Patriots once again struggled at the plate picking up only three hits.  Junior Sam Gleason was again the best Patriot hitter as she collected two hits.  Freshman Sam Thomas collected the third hit, a double to right field.  Tonight, the Patriots committed three errors that led to two unearned runs.  Robin Heironimus started the game and lasted two plus innings before being replaced by Freshman Brittney Moore. Park View hosts Freedom High School this coming Friday evening and will be looking to stop their current skid.

Broad Run 1, Potomac Falls 0
The SKinny: Judy Betz pitches a 1-hitter for Sprartans and Panthers fall for first time this year.

Dan Sousa covered this game and filed this report:

Broad Run senior Judy Betz and Potomac Falls sophomore Heather Kiefer locked up in a nice pitcher’s duel and while there were some baserunners earlier in the game, neither pitcher allowed a run until the Spartans pushed one across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning.

That was enough for Betz who finished with 11 strikeouts and allowed just one hit on a bunt.

Junior Anna Blessing started the winning rally with a hit down the right field line to open the home half of the sixth. Broad Run had its troubles earlier trying to move runners over but junior Jen Soroka got down her bunt nicely, forcing Panther freshman third baseman Lauren Fulcher to field the ball. While Fulcher was throwing Soroka out at first base, Blessing hustled around second toward third base which was uncovered. Panther junior catch Courtney Sunderland sprinted up the baseline to cover the bag but Blessing was able to beat the tag.

Broad Run freshman Kate Sims then singled sharply up the middle to score Blessing and that was all Betz would need.

Kiefer rolled the first time through the Spartan line-up, not allowing anything out of the infield but in the third inning, senior Megan Waterman and sophomore Maggie Betz had back-to-back hits with one out. Kiefer got out of the threat with a strikeout and a line drive to Panther freshman second baseman Caitlin McClay. In the fifth inning, Betz tripled to right-center with two outs but Kiefer got a ground out to Fulcher to keep the game scoreless.

Betz, who said after the game that working nine innings against Loudoun County before the break gave her confidence after being limited to five innings per outing while recovering from offseason surgery, started and finished strong, striking out the side in the first and seventh. She had five more strikeouts in between for 11 total. The only hit allowed came in the fifth inning as sophomore Kayla Guttridge reached on a bunt single. Guttridge moved around to third base but the Panthers could not get her home as Betz ended the inning on a grounder out to sophomore second baseman Jenny Kramer.

Battlefield 1, Loudoun Valley 0
The Skinny: This game was as advertised as Bobcats beat LV in extra innings.

DigitalSports “Man About Prince William (Prince Willie?)” Paul Frommelt covered this game including how a controversial overrule in the eighth inning sent the hometeam Bobcats onto victory. Click here for full coverage including photo and videos!

Loudoun Baseball Notebook

LoudounPrepSport.com Baseball Notebook: April 17

By Dan “Safety Squeeze” Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

(Apr. 17, 2009) – Broad Run High School baseball coach Pat Cassidy shook his head the other night and voiced what everybody had just witnessed: “Potomac Falls is a very good high school baseball team.”

The Panthers, with a two game lead on the pack in the AA Dulles District, have gone 5-0 in district and 7-2 overall with both losses coming at the prestigious Hanahan Invitational Tournament in South Carolina over the break. On Tuesday, PF flexed its muscles in Ashburn, bashing three home runs in a five inning, 12-1 victory.

Potomac Falls has the best of both worlds right now, a lights out pitcher in senior Jake Kline, and a line-up making contact from top to bottom, from sophomore to senior. In fact, Panther coach Joe Terrango said it has been some time since he had a team hitting as well, from No. 1 thru No. 9 in the order, as the Panthers currently are. PF is averaging eight runs a game this season with 73 total in nine contests.

Tonight the Panthers face one of the hottest teams in the Dulles District as Briar Woods, on a five game winning streak, travels to Algonkian Parkway.

Battlefield 5, Loudoun Valley 4
The Skinny: Vikes rally in seventh inning falls just short as they strand tying run on thrid base.

A Viking fan reports that:

After two weeks which included spring break and several rain outs, the Loudoun Valley Vikings baseball finally hit the diamond. They traveled to Battlefield High School and lost a close one 5-4.  Shortstop Bobby Seagers went 2 for 2 with a walk and scored three runs to lead the Bobcat offense. Josh Williams pitched six innings and faced two batters in the top of the 7th inning to record the win. John Shepherd came in relief and got the save.
In the top of the 7th inning with the Bobcats leading 5-1, the Vikings tried to mount a comeback.  They scored three runs but fell short leaving runners on 1st and 3rd base. Junior Peter Evans led the Vikings going 3 for 4. The Vikings fall to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Cedar Run District. They play Fauquier High School on Friday, April 17th and Yorktown on Saturday,  April 18th. Both games are at Fireman’s Field.

Briar Woods 7, Park View 2
The Skinny: Falcons win fifth straight game after opening year 1-2.

Senior Chris Wade continued to swing a hot bat for BW, going 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI, upping his average to .400 and his RBI total to 13.  Hickman went 2-3 and drove in a run, and continues to lead the Falcons in hitting with a .469 average.  Junior Kyle Haufler went 2-3 on the night, upping his average to .441.

The Falcons will host Loudoun County tomorrow, and will travel to Potomac Falls on Friday.

Potomac Falls 12, Broad Run 1 (5 innings)
The Skinny: One of the few games played on Tuesday but the weather couldn’t stop the Panthers hitting machine

Potomac Falls continued to carry their big sticks in their trip to Broad Run last night as Rob Malan, Mike Spring and Ryan Miller all hit homeruns in the Panthers 12-1 win. The win keeps Potomac Falls unbeaten in the District and improved Jacob Kline’s record to 3-0 in the District.

The Panthers got things rolling in the 1st when Ryan Mahoney pulled a pitch down the right field line for a single and Rob Malan followed with a shot over the right field fence for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Broad Run’s Shane Vlasic hit a shot to left field for a leadoff single. After a strikeout, Johnston hit a groundball to second where Ben Sweger turned a double play to end the inning.

Potomac Falls exploded in the second with 5 runs on 7 hits. Chris Pelto, Sweger, Mahoney, Malan, Spring and Miller all had consecutive hits off of Brandon Craft. Meanwhile, Kline was limiting the Spartans to 2 hits through 4 innings with 6 strikeouts.

In the 4th inning, Mike Spring hit a drive over the center field fence and his blast was followed by Ryan Miller’s shot to right field.  Miller now has 3 homeruns in his last two games.  The Panthers closed out their scoring in the 5th inning with singles by Harrison Kee, Sweger and a double by Mahoney to make it 12-0.

Broad Run scored their only run in the 5th when Chris Jessop ripped a triple to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Zach Rawson.

Rob Malan (2-4,  HR, 3 RBI’s), Mike Spring (3-3, HR, 3 RBI’s) Ryan Miller (2-3, HR), Ryan Mahoney (3-4, 2 RBI’s), Ben Sweger (2-4, RBI) and Jacob Kline (5 innings, 5 hits, 6 K’s, 1 BB)

Heritage 3, Dominion 2
The Skinny: Andy Zarobila wins match-up on the mound with Dominion’s Chris Taylor.

Pride coach Ryan Price reports:
It was a big time pitching matchup between Chris Taylor of Dominion and Andy Zarobila of Heritage, and neither pitcher disappointed.  Zarobila picks up the win with a complete game.

Loudoun County 8, Freedom 6 (8 innings)
The Skinny: Eagles led 6-2 going into the sixth inning before Raiders rallied

Freedom coach Chris Bourassa reports:
Despite playing error free baseball, the Eagles could not hold a 6-2 lead entering the 6th inning.  Loudoun County scored two runs in each of the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings to win a come from behind game over the Freedom Eagles. The Raiders Nick Fischer and NIck Veshi hit clutch two out doubles to tie the game in the 7th inning. The Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th, but Raiders SS JJ Levan made a nice play to get a force at 2nd base to end the inning.
Kyle Severns led the Eagles offense going 2-4 with a walk. Ali Moosvi added a 2-run double and 2 walks for the Eagles.
