Top 10 Rankings Per Division thru games played Sept. 28, 2008

(Sept. 30, 2008) – The Potomac Falls High School is tied for first in the state in the AA Division 4 football ratings released by the Virginia High School League Tuesday.

The Panthers, a big winner over Heritage on Friday, have a 26.5 rating, which ties the Panthers with Pulaski County. Broad Run (4-0) is tied for third with a 25.0 rating. Loudoun County (3-1) is ninth, thanks to a win over Park View and Handley’s surprising win over Sherando Saturday in the Northwestern District.

In AAA Division 5, the mediocre record of Stone Bridge’s opponents thus far has the Bulldogs at No. 7 in the state with a 26.8 rating. Phoebus, which fell to SB in the state quarterfinals last season, leads the state with a 29.2 rating. Edison, which lost to SB in the Northern Region finals, is tied for second with a 28.4 mark.

The Minuteman by Steven

Steven is a senior at Park View High School where he is on the golf and lacrosse teams. Give this Patriot a minute and he will give you the latest on Park View athletics.


Sterling (Sept. 28, 2008) – For the second straight home game in a row the rain came down hard on Patriot Stadium and for the second straight home game in a row, Park View came out with a loss. It seemed as if the Patriots could never get a rhythm going and all of their drives ended up unsuccessful.

Loudoun Countyʼs offense had a number of weapons make an impact. QB Joe Bushrod played pretty well and on several occasions had more than a few seconds in which to make something happen. The Patriots could not stop the Raider offense, and with a number of gaps in coverage, it was inevitable that Loudoun County would find the endzone on more than a few occasions.

For all of Park Viewʼs hard work on offense, they were only able to put up four points, and yes, the offense was basically what got us a pair of safeties. Unable to go convert touchdowns and near the goal line, the Raiders twice took over on downs near their own endzone and took safeties rather than give the Patriots the chance to put up seven points.

One good thing for the Patriots, WR Tommy Sedeski played in a limited role, as he is coming off an injury that has kept him sidelined all season. Next week we look ahead to a Freedom Eagles team that was the basement dweller last year. Letʼs hope the players can come into this game with short memories and greater teamwork on both sides of the ball.

Broad Run 29, Briar Woods 0
The Skinny: Spartans score on their only four drives of the first half to post a 23-0 lead and win this rivalry game that featured unbeatens and 2007 playoff teams before a packed house in Ashburn. It was 16-0 before Falcons picked up a first down in the game. Chris Jessop ran in a score and threw to Didier Saidi for a score in the first half. Breon Earl had a 33-yard run on the second play of the game to set up the first TD and a long punt return to set up the second score. BR 1-0, 4-0. BW 0-1, 3-1.

Potomac Falls 48, Heritage 21
The Skinny: Panthers explode for 28 points in the first quarter in this battle of unbeatens. Tarrell Owens intercepted three passes in the game and returned one for a score. He also caught a 38-yd TD. Michael Baker rushed 15 times for 114 yards and three scores of 58, 5 and 1. Greg Woodlief threw for three scores on 9 of 14 passing and 114 yards. Heritage QB Brian Rody threw for 217 yards on 16 of 31 passing but the Panthers defense held Pride RB Ross Madison to 42 yards on 19 carries. PF 1-0, 4-0. Her 0-1, 3-1

Dominion 35, Freedom 7
The Skinny: Titans earn first victory for new coach Karl Buckwalter with Deandre Reaves rushing for 247 yards on 24 attempts and scores of 52, 22 and 58. Dom 1-0, 1-3. Free 0-1, 1-3.

Loudoun County 21, Park View 4
The Skinny: LC  (and the weather!) ruins night celebrating former PV coach Ed Scott. We aren’t sure if the Patriots got a grand slam or if it was two safeties (OK … it was two late safeties that the Raiders took rather than punting out of their own end zone) but the Raiders defense shuts down the Patriots in the district opener. LC now has more victories than 2006 and 2007 combined. Joe Bushrod scored twice in the win. Park View had a TD called back on a penalty, couldn’t score on 4th-and-goal from the 1 and had two passes intercepted inside the 10 in the loss. LC 1-0, 3-1. PV 0-1, 1-3.

AAA Liberty District

Stone Bridge 51, McLean 13
The Skinny: Bulldogs scored all 51 points in the first half with Daniel Allen scoring four touchdowns on four carries! He finished with 167 yards and scores of 6, 71, 20, and 70. Patrick Thompson tossed three touchdowns and went 10 of 14 for 184 yards. SB 2-0, 5-0. McL 0-2, 0-5.

The Skinny: Highlanders. Be Afraid. Very, very afraid. May be biggest mismatch since England vs. Falklands Islands.

The Skinny: When the Spartans were just wee lads … they must have had very bad experiences with punts. You see, on offense, they never do punt (hey, doesn’t that upback on 4th-and-5 look like QB Chris Jessop!) and on defense, they like to block punts right and left.

The Skinny: A great Border Battle as these two Ashburn neighbors (part of the Golden Touchodwn Triangle with Stone Bridge, copyright and trademarked by the LPS Monkey, 2008) open Dulles District play with what should be an SRO crowd. Big question: Can BW stop BR around the corners? And Big Question Part Duex … Will a Muddy Track favor Billy “I’ve got a fullback Named Billy, 16 Carries on the Erie Canal” McDonald and the Falcons. And Biggest Question, Part Trey: Will I find a parking spot at BR?

The Skinny: You just know that score raised eyebrows as BW is a great team but wasn’t seen as a team that could break loose for that many points. Senior defense hasn’t allowed a TD since the first half of the Millbrook season opener.

The Skinny: Honetly, parking is so bad at Broad Run, that we hear that Carl “Mr. Loudoun” Lukat of the LTM and the LPS Monkey are commuting together (Sportswriters Go Green!) … Rich Sanders of the Fairfax Connection we hear is already sleeping in his car on the campus so he doesn’t miss the kickoff this year!

4. Potomac Falls (3-0)

The Skinny: It may have been a bye week but the Panther defense accused the PF offense of running the score up in practice this week … people, people, it’s a joke! Unless your from Hedgesville and then, man, it is one long football season!

This week: vs. Heritage (3-0)

The Skinny: Heritage can be a Jekyl-and-Hyde team but Ross Madison is liable to break loose on any play. You know Heritage’s defense has their chin straps on before they even hit Route 7. PF has been more than about the passing game as Michael Baker has been money thus far and the PF defense has been rock solid. This should be a thriller.

5. Heritage (3-0)

The Skinny: Heritage had a tough game at PF two years ago but returned the favor to the Panthers last year in Leesburg. We think this game is so even that turnovers will be the diference … make’em and see an 0-1 record next to your district mark.

Sterling (Sept. 25, 2008) – Laughter may be the best medicine, but for Loudoun County High School golf coach John Laycock, in and out of the hospital the past month, winning is also a pretty good perscription.

Laycock, back after complications from a shoulder surgery in August left him sidelined, and John Brown, the former Raider golf coach who stepped in for Laycock this season, were both on hand Wednesday at Lowes Island as the young Raiders upended two-time AA Dulles District tournament champion Briar Woods by three strokes.

The Raiders 313 earned them their second district tournament title (the other coming in 2005) and bid to the Region II tournament next week in Crozet. Briar Woods, which had won back-to-back district tournament titles (2006 and 2007) and regular-season titles (2007 and 2008) also qualified for the regional tournament. The Falcons shot 316 Wednesday.

The Raiders didn’t have the best golfer on the course Wednesday, that belonged to Broad Run with senior Kevin Yerks firing a one-under par 71 on a day when the next lowest score belonged to LC sophomore Brantley Kushner with a 76. Freedom — which will send three individuals onto regionals and finished a strong third at 322, three shots better than BR at 325 — had the third-place medalist with junior Alex Choi shooting a 77

Potomac Falls (338), Heritage (354), Dominion (357) and Park View (371) rounded out the team scoring.

A cluster of athletes shot 78 including defending district champion senior Michael Birmingham of Briar Woods and his teammate freshman Adam Ochs. A pair of Raider shot 78, sophomore Kevin Cook and sophomore Andrew Brenneman, as did Freedom junior Tyler Blake.

In a five-way playoff for the Nos. 4-6 medal spots, Birmingham birdied the first playoff hole to take fourth and then Blake defeated Cook on the second playoff hole to take fourth with Cook fifth.

All players shooting 80 or better, and not on the BR or LC rosters, qualified as individuals for the regional tournament. That group included Yerks and teammate senior Tyler Campos (80), the three Eagles, Choi, Blake and Nick Lee (80). The sixth and final individual spot was decided in a playoff with Potomac Falls senior Michael Tondi defeating Heritage freshman John Conley on the first hole. Both had shot 81 for their rounds.

LC’s victory was built on a group of scores between 76 and 81 and all posted by sophomores (Brenneman, Cook, Kushner) and juniors (Jon Youst and Dan Jackson).

The Raiders victory was similar to two seasons ago when LC came into the tournament as the favorite to advance to regionals along side regular-season champion Potoamc Falls, only to have young sophomore-led team of Falcons win the tournament.

That BW group had run the table since then, taking the 2007 regular-season and tournament titles followed by the 2008 regualr-season tournament title. BW, however, stumbled a bit in the last week of the regular-season, falling to Broad Run in a dual match and then just nipping Heritage to clinch the regular-season title.

(Sept. 24, 2008) – Broad Run, Park View and Potomac Falls all picked up AA Dulles District victories Tuesday night in four sets as the first half of the district schedule came to an end.

LC leads the district with a 7-0 record after defeating Heritage (6-1) Tuesday.

PF defeated Briar Woods 25-13, 21-25, 25-11, 25-16 to secure third place in the district standings at the halfway point. The Panthers are 5-2 in district while the Falcons fell fifth place with a 3-4 mark.

BR defeated Dominion, 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23 to move to 4-3 and take over the fourt spot in the standings with the Titans falling to 2-5 and into the sixth spot.

PV put a “W” into the district win column with a 25-20, 11-25, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Freedom. The Patriots are 1-6 and the Eagles fall to 0-7.

In AAA play, Loudoun Valley continued its good start with a Cedar Run District sweep over Culpeper,

Tori Janowski led the Panthers to victory with 16 kills, 12 assists, 8 digs, 7 aces, 19 service points and 4 blocks. The Panthers have now won eight straight matches and can tie Heritage for second place when the two teams meet Thursday at the Panther Pit in Sterling.

The Spartans bounced back from last Thursday’s loss against Potomac Falls with a 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23 win over the Titans.

Elisa Scudder led BR with 15 kills and eight digs. Carolyn Pearce finished with nine kills, 14 digs, three aces, one solo block and one assist block. Emily Sears also added nine kills, one solo and one assist block, and an ace. Melissa Miles had 13 digs and Kristin Burt set 15 assists and had a ****, 10 digs and two aces.

Lauren Wong had a big night for the Titans with 12 kills, 5 aces, 9 digs, 1 solo block and 2 block assists.

Park View 3, Freedom 1
The Patriots prevailed 25-20, 11-25, 25-19, 25-18 to earn their first district win on the year.

Emily Groves had seven aces, four kills and six digs for PV, while Kristin Oravetz added seven aces and six digs. Also for PV, Tabby Pham chipped in six kills and Lindsey Doscotch added seven digs while Abby Burkel ran the offense with 15 assists.

Freedom coach Dave Tsuda reports that the “The Eagles’ team energy was clearly pumped up for this match.  The great serving performances by Morgan Kemp, Sarah Chapman, Kathryn Ivey, and Eboni Weeks kept the scores very close for most of the games. Libero Kara Phung led the stingy Eagle defense with 20 digs. Jenna Flanagin frustrated the opponents with 15 blocks.  More blocks by Kaitllyn Lamantia, Katie Maxwell, and Kemp forced the opponents to alter their attack offense.”            
 
The Eagle Freshmen won 2-1; 25-10, 22-25, 15-13.  Reported Tsuda: “It was quite evident throughout the match, the team energy was pumped up and fueling their aggressiveness.”
  
The Eagle JV won 2-0; 25-17, 25-23. Maryam Kaymanesh and Jenna Hamrick had great offensive and defensive performances that contributed to the wins.

Loudoun Valley 3, Culpeper 0
Loudoun valley defeated Culpeper last night in three sets, 25-7, 25-13 and 25-14. With the win the Vikes improve to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the district.

(Sept. 23, 2008) – Both Park View and Stone Bridge fell in non-district volleyball action Monday with the Patriots losing to Jefferson WV in five sets and the Bulldogs falling to Chantilly in four sets.

Stone Bridge took the first set from the Chargers but fell 21-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-15.

Park View fell down 0-2 but won a thrilling third set, 27-25, and then took the fourth set before falling five, 25-18, 25-18, 25-27, 19-25, 15-7.

(Sept. 22, 2008) – It was a big weekend of prep sports in Loudoun and the action wasn’t limited to the DigitalSports Spirit Bowl competitive cheer competition which packed them in the “Doghouse” at Stone Bridge or to the Oatlands Invitational in Leesburg which has quickly become a nationally-recognized cross country meet and one of the largest single high school sporting events in Virginia with 101 teams and more than 4,000 athletes.

There was some great volleyball action going on as well as AA Heritage swept AAA Battlefield on Saturday, one of the top teams in the Cedar Run District, and Loudoun Valley defeated two-time defending state champion Deep Run. Also on Saturday, AA Dominion split in the Titan Classic, losing to Northern Region heavyweight Herndon before sweeping AAA South Lakes. On Friday it was Park View picking up a win with a sweep over George Mason.

All the weekend action was just a warm up for quite a week in sports with Tuesday’s Dulles District volleyball showdown at Loudoun County with Heritage, both teams ride in unbeaten in district. Also on Tuesday, Loudoun Valley golf has a chance to wrap up a district title in a quad match at Battlefield. On Wednesday it the Dulles District golf tournament at Lowes Island and on Thursday, the LV volleyball team hosts Fauquier, the only team to beat the Vikes this season.

And did we mention … Friday is a battle of 3-0 teams in Dulles District openers as Broad Run hosts Briar Woods and Potomac Falls hosts Heritage.

Loudoun Valley 3, Deep Run 1

Purcellville – Loudoun Valley volleyball extended their winning streak to six games Saturday, defeating 2-time defending state champion Deep Run in 4 games, 25-19, 25-7, 20-25 and 25-18. With the win the Vikes improve to 8-1 overall.

Game leaders for the Vikings-
Ally Blaine had 22 assists and Nicole Bennett added 12 as they directed the Viking offense. Morgan Clark tallied 17 kills, Lindsay Phipps added 8 kills and Taylor Maddox 6 kills.
Blaine led all servers with 19 service points.
 
Phipps was strong along the net on defense as well, collecting 6 blking combos. Clark added 2 combos.
Kristen Martin had a good afternoon defensively, collecting 24 digs. Maddox added 14 digs. Clark earned 11 digs and both setters Blaine and Bennett picked up 10 digs apiece.

Heritage 3, Battlefield 0

Leesburg – Ashley Scott and Emma Lemaitre combined for 21 kills as the Pride defeated the Bobcats, a team that took LV to five sets, in three, 25-17, 25-22, 25-20.

Skye Young notched seven solo blocks in the victory and Lian Bernett and Scott combined for 27 service points. Stephanie Yokoyama had 29 assists and Megan Beckwith (22 digs) and Bernett (16 digs) paced the defense.

Dominion 3, South Lakes 0
Herndon 3, Dominion 0

Sterling – Dominion opened the Titan Classic Saturday with a loss to Herndon (25-9, 25-9, 26-24) but bounced back to sweep South Lakes (25-17, 25-18, 25-12) to earn a split on the day.

Lauren Wong led the Titans with 19 kills on the day, including 14 in the South Lakes win.

Park View 3, George Mason 0

Sterling – The Patriots swept George Mason (25-18, 25-12, 25-22) on Friday night in non-district volleyball action.

It was a true 4×4 effort as four players all had four kills in the win: Tabby Pham, Brittany Griffin, Denni Johnson and Emily Groves. Griffin was hot from the service line with seven aces and Kristin Oravetz had eight aces as well as 10 digs. Lindsey Doscotch had seven digs as well in the W.
