Park View 4, Briar Woods 1

Baseball Sponsored by Diamond Sports Training

By Dan Sousa:

Sterling (May 18, 2008) – After being shocked last year in the AA Dulles District baseball tournament quarterfinals by Freedom, the Park View High School Patriots no doubt felt a bad case of deja vu Saturday as they went into the bottom of the sixth inning, trailing No. 6 seed Briar Woods, 1-0.

“I was thinking in the back of my mind: ‘here we go again’,” said Park View coach Mickey Leap.

The Patriots however had no sense of history and they finally got to BW brilliant starter Ian Hickman in the sixth.

Junior Ben Rosado started the winning rally with a line drive to right field. Sophomore Adam Flees followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Rosado to second.

Sophomore Drew Mason (2-for-3) then ripped a triple to right field that the Falcon outfielder initially came in on but the ball was all the way back to the fence and the game was tied 1-1.

Senior Billy Bradley (2-for-3) cranked a triple to deep center to put PV ahead, 2-1.

Junior Jonathan Mason then capped the rally with a battling at-bat, working back from an 0-2 count, fouling off several pitches before depositing the ball over the right field fence for a two-run home run.

“That is one of the best at-bats I have seen all year,” said Leap.

Jimmy Kerby threw his fourth straight compete game for the victory.

Park View now travels to Potomac Falls on Tuesday for a semifinal game at 6 p.m. The Patriots and Panthers split in the regular season.

Higher Seeded Teams Survive Except for in Boys Soccer Bracket

(May
17, 2008) – With a dozen scores already in the barn, the higher seeds
were doing as expected in the AA Dulles District “Super Saturday” of
baseball, softball, boys and girls soccer except for on the soccer
field where the No. 5 Dominion boys and No. 6 Loudoun County boys shut
out higher seeds.

Laura Heironimus Tosses 1-Hitter as Patriots Advance in Softball

Sterling
(May 18, 2008) – Park View High School senior Laura Heironimus is not
going to blow away oppossing teams with her strikeout totals … all
the Patriot pitcher does is win games as she improved her career record
to 17-4 with a one-hit 4-1 victory over Potomac Falls Saturday in the
AA Dulles District quarterfinals.

Park
View (14-5) has now won 10 of the last 11 with the only loss in that
span coming to undefeated Broad Run and the Patriots will host Loudoun
County on Tuesday in the semifinals. Last season, Loudoun County
knocked off the Patriots in the semifinals. The two teams split in the
regular season.

Saturday’s
game featured Potomac Falls as not your typical No. 7 seed as the
Panthers had just come off a 1-0 loss to Broad Run and with freshman
pitcher Heather Kiefer in the circle, the Panthers can play with any
team.

While
Heironimus, nicely paiting the black, was allowing only one base runner
to second in the first five innings, the Patriots were able to put two
runs on the scoreboard in both the second and fourth inning with
patience, timely hitting and even a little help from an umpiring mix-up
helping Park View.

In
the second, with one out, sophomore Brittany Griffin worked a walk and
sophomore Rebecca Patton followed with a deep triple to center that was
impressive, considering she blasted it into a stiff breeze. Heironimus
then helped her own cause with an RBI single to right to make it 2-0.

In
the fourth inning it was Griffin, once again patient at the plate and
getting a walk. Patton followed with a single to left to put runners at
first and second.

Then a curious bit of umpiring happened.

Heironimus
then laid down a bunt but the ball hit her foot in front of the plate,
either in the batter’s box or in fair territory.

The
Panthers threw Heironimus out at first, but the third base umpire ruled
that she had touched the ball. The home plate umpire then
ruled Heironimus out, but Park View protested that she was touched
while still in the batter’s box and the umpires then changed their
ruling to Heironimus safe at first.

PF
then pointed out that they threw Heironimus out at first so she was
called out, but the runner’s were allowed to stay on second and third
Heironmius should have still been batting with a foul ball being called
if the ball hit her in the box and the runners would have had to stay
at first and second.

As
the Panthers were still trying to figure out the call, sophomore
Samantha Gleason stroked a two-run single to center to make it 4-0.

PF did not get its lone run until the sixth inning.

Ian
Hickman blanked the Pats until the sixth inning when they erased a 1-0
deficit with four runs on back-to-back RBI triples by Drew Mason and
Billy Bradley and a two-run home run by Jonathan Mason. Jimmy Kerby got
the win for PV.

Softball

No. 2 Park View 4, No. 7 Potomac Falls 1: Laura Heironimus pitched a one-hitter to lead PV past the Panthers.

Boys Soccer

No. 2 Park View 4, No. 8 Freedom 0: Patriots advance easily on their home turf.

Girls Soccer

No. 1 Broad Run 8, No. 8 Park View 0: BR’s scoring machine is primed.

Broad Run Girls Wrap Up Regional Bid with Shutout Win at Park View Tuesday

By Dan Sousa:

Park View 2, Broad Run 2 (OT)
AA Dulles District boys soccer played May 6, 2008

Ashburn (May 8, 2008) – Call it an elmination match as the Broad Run High School boys soccer team hosted Park View Tuesday night in a key AA Dulles District game that both teams needed to win in order to stay in the title hunt. And in the end, both were basically eliminated as the Patriots and Spartans battled to a 2-2 tie through overtime.

District leader Heritage (9-1-2) now needs only a tie in one of its two remaining matches to wrap up the No. 1 seed in the district tournament and an automatic Region II bid. If the Pride can win one of their last two, they will also take the district title by themselves as both Broad Run (7-2-3) and Park View (7-2-3) sit more than a game back.

Despite playing against No. 2 ranked Stone Bridge the night before, it was Broad Run that came out with the most energy Tuesday and the Spartans never trailed in the match, taking a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute on a header by junior Onari Tariah.

“We just didn’t come out to play. We didn’t have the ‘oomph’,” said Park View coach Arturo Jimenez. “You have to give it to Broad Run . They took us off our game a little bit.”

Park View tied it in the 29th minute on a goal by junior Eddy Zelaya but BR was able to take a 2-1 lead into the half when freshman Kevin Reitzel pushed in from midfield and headed a ball in during the losing seconds of the first half.

The Spartans had numerous chances to extend the lead in the second half but couldn’t find the back of the net. Broad Run coach Jonathan Hicks thinks his team is close to a breakthrough that will allow them to put more goals on the scoreboard.

“I honestly believe the time is coming. We possess the ball and get forward and cause more problems than any other team in the district,” said Hicks.

Park View finally broke free with 25:35 remaining, with junior Tranzito Zelaya rifling a shot that was headed for the goal when senior Andres Contreras ran onto it and made sure it was going in.

Late in the game, a Park View defender at the near post on a corner kick saved a sure goal by blocking the ball back into play.

In overtime, Park View failed to find the possession that the Patriots need to advance the ball forward and at times, the Patriots seem to lose their patience.

“We can’t play a kick ball game. That’s not our game,” said Jimenez.

Broad Run, with height and the ability to play long balls, also maintained a good amount of possession in the game, stringing together passes through the midfield.

Both Contreras and Broad Run’s Spencer Martin were shown red cards after a tussle near the Patriot bench in overtime.

Tuesday Round-up:

Baseball sponsored by Diamond Sports Training
By: Dan Sousa

AA Dulles District baseball played May 6, 2008

Broad Run senior Cole Shain came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning and got a strikeout to strand the bases loaded with the game tied 2-2 and then J.P. Devlin doubled in the seventh inning and scored on a Chris Jessop sacrifice fly as the Spartans remained in first place in the AA Dulles District baseball race with a 3-2 win at Park View Tuesday.

Devlin had started the game on the mound and worked 5.2 innings before giving up two runs in the sixth inning as the Pats tied it up. Jessop came in, but walked two batters to load the bases, before Shain worked out of the jam.

Shain (6-1) then retired PV in the seventh for the victory. BR and Potomac Falls are tied with 10-2 district marks with two games to play including a showdown between the two teams Friday in Ashburn.

Devlin (two hits, RBI) doubled to start of the top of seventh and after an flair single by pinch hitter Johnny Meier and a walk to Andrew Mann, the bases loaded to set up Jessop’s sac fly.

Trey Brocke had two hits in the game for BR, scored a run and was 2 for 2 in stolen base attempts.
