PV Explodes to Capture Region Boys Soccer Title

Sterling (May 31, 2008) – The Park View High School boys soccer team exploded for four second-half goals Friday and downed Brentsville, 6-1, to capture the Region II championship before a large crowd led by the “Bucket Brigade.”

The Brigade lives to drum another day at home as the Patriots will host Grafton, a 4-2 loser to Jamestown in the Region title game Friday, on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the AA state quarterfinals.

Patriot senior Alex Valesco hit a pair of goals to provide the only scoring in the first half. Valesco knocked in a rebound in traffic with 28:24 remaining in the half. Valesco got the second and eventual game winning goal with just under fifteen minutes remaining in the half.

Julien Coy scored Brentsville’s loan goal just three minutes into the second half, and it looked as if the Tigers were making a comeback.

“I think our guys just ran out of gas,” Brentsville head coach Chip Rohr said. “We have played in two overtimes and had to travel a lot this week. It caught up with us, give them [Park View] credit, they stopped us when we did get chances to make something happen.”

Midway through the second half the Patriots broke things open with senior Andreas Contreras and freshman Jose Herrera each scoring twice.

Park View was on top of their game the entire night and may have played their best game of the season when it counted the most.

“We have been close the last few games, but tonight everything just fell into place,” Patriot head coach Arturo Jimenez said. “Our passing and possession made the difference tonight.”

The winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal game will advance to Radford with semifinals on Friday and the championship game on Saturday.

PV Boys Soccer Advances to Region II Title Game

By Michael “Moe” Murphy
Special to LoudounPrepSports.com

Winchester (May 29, 2008) – Park View High School fans were rewarded
with two treats on Wednesday. Discovering an area where gas is still
selling for $3.85 a gallon and a thrilling 1-0 boys soccer overtime
victory over Handley to advance to the Region II championship game
against the Brentsville Tigers. The game will be played at Park View
Friday at 6 p.m. The victory also gives the Patriots a berth to the AA
state tournament, which starts next week.

The
Patriots (17-2-3) pressed the Judges hard the entire game but came up
short time after time on scoring opportunities. Handley (16-2-2) also
had several opportunities just miss and the score was knotted at zero
at the half.

Park View came out and immediately stepped up their
game in the second half, but were unable to penetrate the net, mainly
due to the play of Handley senior keeper Kyle Pryde.

”Kyle
probably played the best game of his career today,” Handley head coach
Cosmo Balio said. “He stopped everything [Park View] threw at him. All
off our guys played great today. We had a great season and we have
something to build on next season.”

The Judges stepped up the aggressiveness and were hit with several yellow cards in the second half.

Patriot
keeper Omar Gonzales was perfect in the pipes for Park View. The
physical play did not wear down the Patriots as they were able to keep
the ball on the Handley end towards the end of regulation. Several
shots hit the crossbar, but with no time remaining in regulation, the
game was still scoreless.

For the second time in the playoffs,
junior Pedro Mendoza hit the winning goal, this time the score coming
at 1:33 in the first 5-minute overtime period. Mendoza was able to get
past Pryde and hold his shot; he was then able to dribble the ball into
the empty net after Pryde’s commitment.

The Patriots won the VHSL
AA boys soccer titles in 1991 and 1992. They have not made the finals
since then. The VHSL record book does not show semifinal or
quarterfinal appearances but Patriots head coach Arturo Jimenez says it
was way before he took over that a Patriot boy’s soccer team played in
the states.

“We were able to play our game today,” Jimenez said.
“I told our team at the half that we needed to finish up. We were
getting plenty of chances, but weren’t putting anything in the net. I
thought we might be able to beat them on the outside and Pedro was able
to get in behind them on the left side. It also didn’t hurt to have one
of the best keepers in the state out there for us today.”

Park View’s opponent Friday, Brentsville, advanced with a penalty kick victory over Orange in the semifinals.

Patriots knock off Warriors to advance to Semi’s

By Michael “Moe” Murphy

Sterling (May 27, 2008) – The Park View High School boys soccer team kept its dream alive Monday with a 2-1 victory over a stubborn Western Albemarle team in the Region II quarterfinals..

The win moves the Patriots into the Region II semifinals against Handley in Winchester on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

After both teams battled Monday for 39 minutes to a scoreless tie, Patriot freshman Jose Herrera put the Patriots ahead 1-0 with a corner kick.

“It just got real crowded and chaotic down around the goal on their [Park View’s] first score,” Western Albemarle head coach Paul Rittenhouse said.

The Patriots got their second goal, which at the time looked like an insurance goal, when Patriot defender Pedro Mendoza blasted a shot twenty yards inside the midfield line to the upper left corner of the goal at 23:41 in the second half. The goal turned out to be the game winner.

Western Albemarle pulled within one goal of Park View at 9:51 when Walt Barber blasted in a free kick from just outside the box. Barber hit the top left corner over outstretched hands of Park View keeper Omar Gonzales.

“Our guys really pushed the last 10 minutes of the game,” Rittenhouse said. “We are young; I wish our team would have pushed the whole game like we did in the last 10 minutes.”

The Patriots played short-handed after Kevin Santos was hit with a yellow and soft red card late in the game.

The Warriors pushed hard moving their keeper Charles Stump to midfield and maintaining possession for the last two minutes of the game. The Park View defense thwarted off several Warrior attempts to preserve the victory.

“It was a good game for the team, the students and the school,” Patriots head coach Arturo Jimenez said. “We tried to slow them and keep possession. The last 15 minutes of the game the were able to take us out of our game and push hard.”

The Patriots will travel to Winchester to play the Handley Judges on Wednesday at 4:30. The Judges are 16-1-2 with their only loss coming to Brentsville in the Northwestern District Tournament championship game. Handley also had a pair of ties with Sherando and Millbrook in the regular season.

“We have to still play our game,” Jimenez said. “I don’t know too much about Handley, but I am going home now to do my homework.”

A win Wednesday would clinch a state playoff berth for Park View.

LPS 2008 Regional and State Scorecard

Note: This exclusive LoudounPrepSports.com chart is compiled by the LPS Monkey. First discovered among ancient Mayan ruins, the Regional and State Scorecard was actually a key bargaining point at the Potsdam Convention. Accusations that the LPS Monkey has used performance enhancers to keep up with this chart have been unproven and his relationship with Roger Clemens’ wife is purely plantonic.

Softball sponsored by Diamond sports training

By: Dan Sousa

South Riding (May 23, 2008) – It was a beautiful afternoon Thursday but Loudoun County High School junior and her Raider softball team had to take care of an **** situation from the very first pitch against Park View

Holtz and PV starter Laura Heironimus then battled in a scoreless game until the final inning when the Raiders  got back-to-back hits from Hope Flanagan and Lindsey Packard followed by a walk to Megan Lindsey. Taylor Grimmell then drove in a run with a fielder’s choice to second, and after strikeout, Kristen Gorman beat out a slap single to short to make it 2-0.

Holtz finished the game with a doubleplay ball to shortstop Holly Norris, who had seven assists and a putout in the final four innings.

College Vision Student Athlete of the Month

“Anastasia really contributed to the success of Park View winning the Dulles District. She came all the way from Bielefeld, Germany as an exchange student. She played tennis there in her city but not in school competition. She was a fantastic young lady and we miss her already.   Her ability on the court was the boost we needed to make our lineup stronger.  Her smile was contagious and her contribution to the team was one we will never forget.”
