Sterling (Oct. 11, 2008) – Potomac Falls High School improved upon its best football season ever Friday with a 28-20 AA Dulles District victory over Sterling rival Park View.

Panther senior quarterback Greg Woodlief rushed for a score and threw for two more touchdowns on 11 of 16 passing for 209 yards. Chad McMichael caught a 23-yard touchdown and had six catches for 88 yards. Tarrell Owens piled up 111 yards receiving on four receptions, including a 61-yard score. Owens also had a key deflection on defense that resulted in the game’s only turnover, an intercepton by Matthew Hoover that set up the first of two Asa Fox’s first-half field goals. That first field goal came after PF had been denied in the Red Zone with a 7-6 lead.I

The second field goal came with 11 seconds to go in the half. In between, Woodlief hooked up with Owens on the  long TD play and the Panthers had a 20-6 halftime advantage.

Park View was able to cut the lead to a touchdown with a Brandon Lee to Josh Jones 25-yard touchdown on a fourth down play but PF answered with the Woodlief to McMichael touchdown and then the Panther defense made it 28-13 with a safety late in the third quarter, sacking Lee in his own end zone.

The Patriots made it interesting with a Lee to Drew Mason 48-yard scoring play with 4:48 to play but the PF defense would not allow the Patriots to get close to scoring the tying touchdown.

Michael Baker helped the Panthers take some time of the clock with a variety of hard running plays including a key 21-yard pick-up on 3rd-and-21 late in the game. He finished with a well-earned 109 yards on 20 carries.

Six PV rushers combined for 177 yards but the Patriots managed just 90 yards passing, with half of that coming on the Mason TD.

PF is a step closer to the school’s first ever playoff spot with a 6-0 start and 3-0 district mark. PV falls to 1-2 and 2-4.

Football: PF Ranked No. 1 in Division 4 Ratings

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

(Oct. 7, 2008) – Undefeated Potomac Falls High School leads all AA Division 4 schools in the latest football rankings released by the Virginia High School Legue Monday. The Panthers (5-0) have a 26.8 ratings. Broad Run, also undefeated at 5-0, is tied for third with a 26.0 rating.

While district champions receive automatic bids into the playoffs, the VHSL ratings determine the remainder of the playoff field in each region and also determines homefield advantage.

The area’s third undefeated team, Stone Bridge (6-0), is currently fifth in Division 5 with a 27.667 rating. Briar Woods sits No. 10 in Division 3 at 20.2.

Click for the Top 10 in each of the six divisions.

Northern Region Ratings
Division 5
1, Edison 30.3
2, Stone Bridge 27.7
3, Yorktown 24.2
4, Madison 24.0
5, Mount Vernon 23.8
6, Marshall 20.7
7. Washington-Lee 19.5
8. Lee 18.3
8, Wakefield 18.3
10, Hayfield 18.2
11, South Lakes 16.8
11, TJ 16.8
13, McLean 15.3
14, Stuart 15.2
15, Falls Church 14.5

Division 6
1, Oakton 30.0
2, Westfield 29.7
3, Chantilly 26.3
3, West Potomac 26.3
5, West Springfield 26.0
6, South County 23.7
7, Woodson 23.2
8, Langley 23.0
9, Herndon 22.8
10, Fairfax 22.7
11, Lake Braddock 21.3
11, Robinson 21.3
13, Annanadale 21.0
14, T.C. Williams 18.0
15, Centreville 17.0

If the playoffs were held tomorrow, top ranked teams in D5, Edison and Stone Bridge, would be facing teams with losing records. SB’s path to another state crown could inlcude Lee again in the first round followed by Yorktown and then a third straight regional title match with Edison, but this year the game might not be held in Ashburn unless the Bulldogs can make up ground in the ratings. The soft record on SB’s non-district opponents has not helped. In D6, how about a wild first round playoff game between West Potomac and West Springfield … it could take 50 points to win that one. A long way to go however …

Region II
Division 4
1, Potomac Falls 26.8
2, Broad Run 26.0
3, Sherando 22.4
4, Loudoun County 22.2
5, James Wood 21.2
6, Louisa County 20.8
7, Heritage 19.2
8, Park View 18.0
9, Orange 16.8
10, Charlottesville 13.8
11, Brentsville 13.2

Division 3
1, Handley 24.0
2, Monticello 23.6
3, Briar Woods 20.2
4, Skyline 20.0
5, Millbrook 17.8
6, Western Albemarle 15.8
7, Fluvanna 15.2
8, Kettle Run 14.7
9, Dominion 14.4
10, Central 13.0
11, Warren County 12.8
12, Freedom 12.4
13, William Monroe 10.0

If the playoffs were held tomorrow, you could figure that in D4 Potomac Falls would host LC in a rematch of Friday’s game won by the Panthers and Broad Run would host defending regional champion Sherando in a showdown in Ashburn. In D3, Handley would host Skyline in an all-Northwestern District game and Briar Woods would travel to Monticello. But there is still a lot of football to play.

Friday Night Scoreboard

Friday Oct. 3, 2008 Scoreboard

AA Dulles District

Briar Woods 7, Dominion 0
The Skinny: Falcons make a Ray Taliaferro 3-yard run in the second quarter stand up as the BW defense limits Dominion 36 total yards, keeping explosive RB Deandre Reaves to just 40 yards on 20 carries. BW piled up 293 total yards but three turnovers and 10 penalties kept BW from scoring more. Taliaferro finished with 142 yards on 18 carries. The Titans had more interceptions (3) than completions (2) with BW’s Jeremy Gray collecting two of the picks. BW 1-1, 4-1. Dom 1-1, 1-4.

Broad Run 21, Heritage 13
The Skinny: Two Chris Jessop-to-Adrian Flemming TDs in the second quarter erased a 7-0 Pride lead. Breon Earl’s short punt return for a score provided the final cushion as Josh Thiel hit two second half field goals for Heritage. Pride QB Zach Gordon got the Homecoming crowd fired up with a first quarter score to Dan Dykema. Heritage drove to the Spartan 2 in the waning minutes only to have Joseph Walter intercept a pass in the end zone and return it 57 yards. BR then ran the clock out. Ross Madison gained 131 yards on 25 attempts for the Pride. BR 2-0, 5-0. Her 0-2, 3-2.

Potomac Falls 47, Loudoun County 14
The Skinny: The big play Panthers had four scoring plays of 38 or more yards in the game including Michael Baker with a 59-yard run and 38-yard fumble return and Greg Woodlief with a 67 run and 40 yard pass to Tarrell Owens. The Raiders intercepted three passes in the first half but couldn’t take advantage as they were giving up four fumlbes as the two teams combined for seven turnovers in the first half, five in the second quarter alone. PF turned a 6-0 advantage into a 27-0 with three scores in a 93-second span in the second quarter. PF 2-0, 5-0. LC 1-1, 3-2.

Park View 41, Freedom 13
The Skinny: Patriots even up their district mark and set up a big game next week as they host undefeated Potomac Falls. Brandon Lee had a big game at QB for the Pats, throwing for four scores, two each to Tommy Sedeski and Josh Jones, and rushing for TDs. Lee finished with 193 yards passing and 90 yards rushing. Luke Bratton threw two scores for Freedom. PV 1-1, 2-3. Free 0-2, 1-4.

AAA Liberty District

Stone Bridge 51, South Lakes 6
The Skinny: Bulldogs led only 29-0 at the half … yes we are being a bit dry here. Patrick Thompson celebrated his Wake Forest comittment by scoring on three runs and throwing a TD pass to John Bladel (we knew him when he was Johnny!). Daniel Allen had a TD run and Mike Olson (hey, he’s going to Wake also!) had an interception return for a score. Abdul Shaban has attempted so many extra points this season that he is filing for workman’s comp. Seahawks good rushing game was grounded to just three yards on 24 attempts. Bulldogs are averaging 51.6 points per game so call this just an “average SB win”! SB 3-0, 6-0. SL 0-3, 1-5.

Westfield 41, Woodson 6
The Skinny: Cavs fall in non-district game to powerhouse Bulldogs. WTW 3-0, 4-2.

Madison 18, Langley 14
The Skinny: Doesn’t get any easier for Saxons with SB up next. Mad 3-0, 4-2. Langley 2-1, 3-3.

Wakefield 37, TJ 10
The Skinny: Hey, come on, SATs are coming up. Warriors get non-district win. TJ 0-3, 1-5.

Marshall vs. McLean

AAA Cedar Run District

Fauquier 28, Loudoun Valley 0
The Skinny: Vikes shut out for the fourth time in five games. LV defense did hold high-flyin’ Falcons to their lowest point total on season. Fauquier 2-0, 5-0. LV 0-2, 0-5.

Hylton 48, Culpeper 0
The Skinny: Culpeper has been held to a total of nine points in its four losses. Non-District affair. Culp 0-2, 1-4.

Liberty 41, Stonewall Jackson 0
The Skinny: Raiders remain winless under new coach Mike Dougherty, former Dominion head coach. Lib 1-1, 4-1. SJ 0-2, 0-5.

Battlefieled 25, Osbourn Park 17
The Skinny: OP came in having allowed just 17 points all season but BF remains unbeaten on the year. BF 2-0, 5-0. OP 1-1, 3-2.

Potomac 28, Osbourn 14
The Skinny: Eagles fall in non-district game. Osbourn 1-1, 1-4.

LPS Update!

From: Dan Sousa, LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

To: LPS Viewers!

Well we are still working out our software updates here at DigitalSports so our content is a bit backed up. We are also working out some issues as some of the Sports Centrals and School sites are coming back online.

Rest assured, Alysia “Sideout” Deem and myself are out covering events and we have a lot of good stuff (official term for stories, videos, photos, LPS Monkey musings) to put up. Here is what to expect in the next 72 hours:

Football: Dan is covering Potomac Falls at Loudoun County tonight and Alysia will be at Broad Run at Heritage. Expect video highlights, interviews and photos from both games. Plus we have to get our You  Pick’Em back up! In the meantime, here is Sneak Peak:

You Pick’Em: Last Week’s Winners: Congrats to John Koren, one of our biggest winners two years ago, back in the winner’s circle with his 28-7 BR pick over BW (final was 29-0). He edged out Landon Hawes, young son of PF boys hoops coach Jeff Hawes! Koren also tied with SB baseball coach Sam Plank in our other game as both had PF winning 35-21 over Heritage, off by 13 in the surprising 48-21 final.

This week’s Game: Potomac Falls at Loudoun County (send the final score predictions into Dan email:dsousa@digitalsports.com).

Also in football, here is our latest Power Ranking:

1, Stone Bridge (5-0). 2, Broad Run (4-0). 3, Potomac Falls (4-0). 4, Briar Woods (3-1). 5, Heritage (3-1). 6, Loudoun County (3-1). 7, Loudoun Valley (0-4). 8, Park View (1-3). 9, Dominion (1-3). 10, Freedom (1-3).

Tonight’s games: PF @ LC; BR @ Heritage; Dominion @ BW; PV @ Freedom; Fauquier (4-0) @ Valley; and SB @ South Lakes (1-4).

News: Freedom RB Jeff Pugh likely out for the season. We wish him a speedy recovery!

(Our football stats are behind but we are collected the data … either we will post it over the weekend or send it in with those Lucky Charm box tops to get a glow-in-the-dark decoder ring.)

Volleyball: Dan covered the Briar Woods win over Dominion last night and Alysia was at LC’s win over Potomac Falls. Check back for the story including video highlights and interviews and photos.

Volleyball scoreboard: LC 3, PF 0, BW 3, Dom 1; Her 3, PV 0; BR 3, Free 0; LV 3, Battlefield 2 (Vikes come from behind to take control of first place in Cedar Run District); SB 3, Marshall 0 (Bulldogs open Liberty District play with a win). Check back for a round-up with details on these matches.

We also have the latest Off the Net blog entry from NoDinx to post.

Latest Volleyball Power Rankings: 1, Loudoun County. 2, Loudoun Valley. 3, Heritage. 4, Potomac Falls. 5, Briar Woods. On the bubble: Broad Run, Stone Bridge, Dominion

Cheer: This afternoon we will put up a preview of Saturday’s big cheer meet at Park View. After the meet, check back for a story with video and photos!

Golf: We have video from last week’s Dulles District tournament to put up. We will also have full coverage of Valley’s attempt at repeating as the Northwest Region champion.

Cross Country: BW runners set some records yesterday, check back for details. Plus Dan is working on a fun feature story about ultra-marathon running with interviews with Dominion XC coach Brian Schmidt and LC XC coach Courtney Campbell.

Whew! Not enough for you … for the love of … OK, how about this: Alysia went to the Team Joe charity golf event this morning and has photos and videos (Joe Petrella is so cute! LPS Monkey says uncle Ron Petrella ain’t half bad … not sure what to make of that comment) … We have PF Athletes of the Month to post … an interview with new SB girls soccer coach Joan Windows (her third head coaching job so we reserve the right to call her Windows 3.0) … and breaking news on another coaching hire (shhhh … Paul Tenorio, our favorite WashPost reporter, might be reading …. So we won’t give it away!).
